As the topic of this week is on Waterproofing in India, i thought it would be appropriate to ask something regarding the same. In the beginning, many thought that the objective of waterproofing was to prevent rain water from falling on their head. As people started using delicate and costly materials, and housing equipment, systems, etc. inside buildings, the ensurement of watertightness of building type structures became important.

With time, it was recognized that it would be a good idea to make water retaining structures also water-tight. But it took a while to recognize that there was more to waterproofing than to prevent rain water from falling on the head or arresting water leakages through water retaining structures. The problem of unsatisfactory durability is more acute in India where it has reached an alarming state.

So people, what are the Challenges that we seen in waterproofing of Structures?

Failure to understand the purposes and rot causes.

To me, the biggest challange is the lack of understanding what we want to achieve and the root causes of failure. Just using some chemicals blindly is not going to get your structure (I assume an enclosed space here) waterproofed. One needs to identify the plausible sources of breach and address these individually. I have seen water flowing through electrical conduits laid in wall chases because they were not properly sealed. I have seen water leak through gaps between the wall and door / window frames and also through gaps between frames and glazing, through cracks at ceiling and wall junctions, through gaps between the flooring and the drain pipe. Every such occurance needs to be thoroughly studied and and appropriate solution arrived at. No amount of tar felting or membrane waterproofing is going to stop water from seeping in if the roof slopes are not properly made to drain the water completely through rain water pipes and water is allowed to form puddles on the roof. No amount of waterproofing will stop water leakage through walls permanently if the walls are not made sound and impervious through proper construction. In most builder built buildings, I have been able to see daylight through the joints in the bricks (including hollow blocks, for which the consequences are worse). Sound construction practice is the starting point for sound waterproofing, rest all come later.

I fully endorse the views.Basically we need to understand the type of construction/purpous.For ex waterproofing for toilets is different from roofs.Depending upon the type of work we need to take appropriate preventive methods &also carry out the construction strictly as per the laid down specifications /proceedures inorder to prevent the leakages ,if,any in future.Blindly following some methods is not going to solve the problem. The leakages are also due the lack of technical knowledge in th constuction workers whomight cause the future leakage during construction stage itself

prevention of leakage

the main problem in roof leakages is that insufficent slopes &stagnation of water. If we can takecare of this &ensure that the water falling on the roof is quickly and effectively major problem is solved.it is also because of not cleaning the roofs frequently the problem starts.hence we need to prevent this first

I hate it when I see " Waterproofing " as a tender item. In a brand new building there is no excuse for the R.C.C. slab to leak. [a] Slab should have specified slope [b] properly vibrated dense concrete, not vibrated with a bamboo pole.[c] As a back-up, good cement grout followed by nicely done IPS finish [d] No playground activity on terrace.

Failure to Adopt Appropriate Technology

idea posted by Anjali Bhatia Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Waterproofing is an activity in the domain of civil engineering, and it involves structures. It can thus be very helpful to have a good knowledge of civil engineering and structures. Thus, when chemists and material scientists develop chemicals and systems of waterproofing , they are likely to overlook fine points in civil-structural construction engineering, and the technology for waterproofing may not be appropriate. This is particularly so as most often technologies are first developed, and later avenues are sought to apply the technology. The best results are possible when technologies are developed to solve problems, and not the other way round.

Joints are common in any construction, whether it is steel/concrete/ other materials. One should adopt the proper technology w.r.t. wter proofing. Some water proffing chemicals(available) may not be adoptable to certain type of cement. So this may cause failure. Proper technology and good construction practice to be adoptaed to solve this problum.

Failure to Improvise

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

Every work site has a character of its own, requiring improvisation. Though a particular waterproofing chemical and a particular system will be employed as the basic treatment, local conditions frequently require for a successful waterproofing treatment that certain modifications are made to the implementation procedure or that a different chemical and a different system be employed locally as a stand-alone or as an additional treatment. A failure to make necessary improvisation may lead to a failure of the waterproofing treatment.

USAGE OF INGREDIGENTS FOR CONSTRUCTION

idea posted by malladi madhukumar Senior Manager- Marketing, Cement company

CEMENT : In India we find mostly OPC,PPC,PSC.  MUCH OF THE CONSTRUCTION FATERNITY KNOW THAT PPC IS MORE CORROSION RESISTANT, CHEMICAL RESISTANT AND PSC IS STILL BETTER THAN PPC INTHESE ASPECTS. aS SUCH PSC IS RECOMMENDED FOR PORTS ALSO.

uSAGE OF SUTIABLE SAND, AND USAGE OF GOOD BLUE CHIPS  BETTER WORKMANSHIP CAN GIVE GOOD FINISHING PRODUCTS. AND CAN LEAD TO WATERPROOFING CONSTRUCTIONS.

BETTER MASONARY PRACTICES CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE A GREAT DEAL IN THIS MATTER.
