Critical skill set that a PM should possess include the ability to understand the Project Scope, Organisational Policies and Procedures and Technology involved. He should be honest, versatile, and possess high energy levels and decision making skills. Understanding problems of the Team Members, motivating and leading them and quickly responding to problems also form part of the required attributes.

A charismatic project manager will get things done faster and smoother. Common sense plays a vital role in managing a project. Flexibility is important for PM team to experiment new ways. Finally the PM should be the most approachable person in the entire team

I agree and want to add few more points:

1. Able to collaborate across the different groups within the organization to get things done.

2. Apply situational leadership tactics - to be able to change the leadership style (Collaborative, authoritative, compromising) as the situation demands.

3. Good negotiation skills and able to see the others' point of view and think win-win

Motivate its team to be cohesive

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

Many a time the complexities of their tasks require more than mere management skills. In essence, the project manager must bring together disparate resources—often borrowed or assigned and priority-conflicted individuals, and motivate those individuals to develop as a cohesive team and to deliver high quality results.

Experiences and skills gained over time defintiely puts a PM in a psotion to manage, manuevor, motivate and miantain the team. It is easy to lose borrowed resources who many have critical input or expertise to contribute. Successful PM is like a all-in-all, people's person who has chriasma to keep the precious resources intact skillfully even though they are not assign to his project.

The tools, techniques, methodologies are easier to learn and apply. People skills and relationship are always a challange among experienced professional.
