In an recent survey it was said that requirements analysis, in particular the requirements elicitation, is a hard task, and that it is always avoided by most of the software engineering people. And many believe that most researchers try and avoid with elicitation of requirements, because it is an area where one has to deal with informality, incompleteness and inconsistency. Instead, they labeled it as dealing with requirements, which usually deals with specification, So my question is What are the current Elicitation techniques followed in the industry??    share your thoughts on this.

Information gathering

idea posted by Arun Sarin Business Analyst, Oracle
This is very important in the Elicitation techniques, and interviews are the best forms and the most common method used to gather informations on various issues, The information collected through interviews can address organizational and contextual factors provided that the right questions are asked. Similarily if the right people are interviewed the information will represent multiple stakeholders opinions across a number of different communities affected by the development of the proposed system being elicited. So this is one of the Elicitation techniques.

Requirements Expression and Analysis

i agree with Arun, but  Elicitation is also concerned with gathering information from various stakeholders in order to derive the requirements for a system as such.  So this collected information needs to be represented in some way, and ideally the gathered statements are expressed “in a specified manner which elucidates their implications, prompts further questions, correlates different aspects, and facilitates detailed analysis”

This viewpoint approach is exemplified by CORE (COntrolled Requirements Expression). Hope this helps..
