Water is becoming an important resource which need to be protected and managed properly. We might have been using many traditional methods to manage water. But at the present economic condition where there is scarcity of water and increasing population, What are the different and innovative ways of water management?

Water Treatment

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

According to me the raw sewage must be treated before it is discharged into the river stream and I think this is the most cost-effective way of water management. The extent of treatment required to be given depends not only upon the characteristics and quality of the sewage but also upon the source of disposal, its quality and capacity to tolerate the impurities present in the sewage effluents without itself getting potentially polluted. Everyone of us should think of utilizing the waste water to reduce water scarcity.

Yes water treatment is very much needed. We can see the effect of global warming is going worse day by day. so it is the right time to adopt a proper method of water treatment and recycling the used water. but moreover we should work for the consciousness of common people for not wasting water.

Water is a very precious resource.

We can do all the harvesting or collection of water but the usage of water needs to be regulated , controlled or monitored without which it will be wasted. We need a lot of promotion regarding this activity. Some innovative ways of getting the message have to be envisaged.

Water treatment is inevitable as living beings use water for all basic necessities. We need to develop faster and cheaper ways of water treatment which is possible only when we invest in water treatment techology. More concessions should be given for R&D in this sphere.

Rain water harvesting is a must for cities as concrete slabs cover the land blocking any rain water seepage to ground water tables. In our flats I personally made sure 8 big sized pits are created for rain water harvesting.

Rain Water harvesting

idea posted by malladi madhukumar AGM -MKTG, Andhra Cements Ltd

Rainwater harvesting is one of the most easily implementable propositions.

I came to know that in Bombay buses are cleaned with rain water in rainy season.

In my childhood I still remember that my mother used to store rainwater for floor cleaning and usage in bathroom.

In some of the foreign countries rain water is harvested with special tanks.

Let us take this opportunity and pledge that  we harvest atleast one bucket of water  on a rainy day. and let us save precious water and power we use for pumping water.

A good  update , Rainwater harvesting not only saves water but also cuts power bill of Municipality but also individual users.

Yes rain water harvesting is one of the better ways. I will go a step further the Govt. must look into the way of putting desalination plants all over the costal area and wherever the groundwater level is more than 100 feet connect those cities with this water. Probably it will take a decade but the people will feel safe sinc as on today the worldover the fresh water accounts for 2% and rest are non usable water.

With already winter season about to end and summer entering  it is right time to start working on local water harvesting divises  such as

Cleaning ponds, tanks by removing silt, and weeds.

Strenghthening tank bunds.

Steps to avoid floods , formation of water flow monitoring cells.

Construction of check dams.

Propagating rainharveting systems in urban as well as rural areas.

Implementation water recharging devices.

SUM TOTAL OF WATER IS ALWAYS CONSTANT

idea posted by ROMESH CHANDER propreitor, ECS NEW DELHI

The quantity of water on earth is constant. I mean to say that the water simply changes position and the state of its existance.

We have water in sea  as sea water, on mountains and poles as ice, in atmosphere as vapours and at certain level in the sky as clouds. But some water is in vegetables, trees and the balance for human consumption in various state for their use .Thus  the  place of presence and storage is an important point

We have water in our bodies the quantity of which  increases directly in proportion to number of people. Similarly botteled water, cold drinks and medicine too including alcohal ,contain plenty oy water.

The problem of lowering of water table indicate that the water consumed and stored above surface have increased many folds. In Delhi at times the water was availble at 40 t0 60 feet deep and today that has gone more than 240 feets. This is because of concentration of population on a given area. I rememeber the days when In Delh there were 35 lakhs persons AND NOT  SO MANY CAMPA COLAS, LIMCA AND ALSO OTHER DRINKS LIKE BEAR AND DIPLOMAT OR MACDOWEL AND SODAS.

Under given circumstances the underground water quantity can be increased. But for the dams, the consumption pattern that include various storage options  for human direct consumption as drinks, CAN NOT BE. The quantity of vegetables too contains enough water and besides the requirment of water for bathing washing utensils and use in toilet have also increased many folds.

Under such conditions, rain water harvesting may be a good option in cities. However ridiculous this may appear but the use of Tissue paper for toilt use is an another important option.

This means that the increase in population and the direct requirment of water as retained in bodies, vegetables, bottled and stored in tanks or dams are the real causes of deplition of ground water.

The problem can be solved  by making the sea water potable as the rains can not be influenced and the rain water increased at will. We can not reduce the population of human being , animals or the quantity of vegetation as that is bound to increase as  their demand increases with every increase in population. Thus we see that the problem is EVER inccreasing consumption of water and  this problem can only be solved by removing salt from sea water and making at potable for human consumption as we can not get used to drinking salty water.

Ground water, river water, lake water and the water in wells if potable than should be freely available and not like as  in Bombay AND DELHI. tHE WATER ONCE USED IS REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED BY FRESH POTABLE WATER ONLY..... We have to solve this problem urgently efficiently and  minimum cost. And the requirment is huge and therfore we must look why the natural resources are depliting and how to preserve them. The following are secobndary.

Water treatment.

Rain water and sewage water  [ any how this is not new resource and we need new supply as the population is increasing]

RAIN WATER HARVESTING  [REQUIRE FUND ORGANIASTIONAL SET UP AND PLACE

sea water is the another important option from where the only additional water round the year can be obtained

by ROMESH CHANDER, propreitor, ECS NEW DELHI  | 12 21 2009 09:54:22 +0000

Since  the amount of water is constant and potable contents are diminishing, we must preserve the water in potable form as discussed in

THE SUM TOTAL OF WATER IS  ALWAYS CONSTANT, AS THAT CHANGES PLACE ONLY AS DESCRIBED

Collect rain water locally

idea posted by Reni sebastian Assistant Engineer, State government of Keralam

In rural areas of kerala there is a system used for many years is to collect rain water by using a cloth tied across by 4 poles at 4 ends. Very less amount of water is collected at each rain .But it is an easily practicable method for each house with out any cost.

Nice concept & idea. Such an important part of our lives, yet water is the most wasted element in India. In mumbai, people scorn & make fun of us as stupid environmental freaks when we suggest not to waste the precious water. Its the mentality of such so called literate people who are careless and then blame others for not having enough resources to provide their lavish lifestyles that need to be changed. I feel the concretization of the roads are also one of the ways that lead to waste of water. The rain water just go to drains since it cannot percolate in the earth and hence there is less water beneath the surface hence the trees in cities will not have enough fluids and eventually fall, hence future fall in rain percentage. I hope my theory is practical enough?

Stormwater management

idea posted by Anjali Bhatia Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Friends stormwater management is the recent technique followed to manage the waste water. It is nothing but managing the stormwater quality and quantity. By using this method you can control the flood and erosion and control hazardous materials to prevent release of pollutants into the environment. The main advantage of constructing stormwater systems is it removes contaminants before they pollute surface waters or groundwater resources. Because ground water is the only major source for drinking water it should be protected from getting polluted.

Storm rainwater harvesting on highways: I have seen a road between Nellore to chennai (ON Calcutta- Chennai Highway where single drop of water was not seen in spite of heavy rain and the water with great discipline enters small channel which can be utilised for other puposes.

This is the usable water created without expenditure .

In this connection the contractors, engineers and local authorities and people can play great role.

recycling of water

idea posted by Nishant Gupta Network Admin/System Admin, 3i-Infotech

The water used in washing your hands in the sink or bathing in the tub is drained to a tank that feeds into the toilet which uses the same water to flush. It seems like a a minute savings, but considering that gallons are saved per flush + the millions of people

at present it is a era of crisis just like a energy crisis ,land crisis and most of water crisis in earth only 30% of usefull water are there and know its a time to save water ,we are waste lot of water for unuselly works ,so we recycling of water in manufacturing company to step a recycle plant in there company and used most recycle water ...................and save water

idea posted by sudhir y kadam Sales Executive/Officer, ramco industries ltd

entire world other than sone asian contries going for dry walling for there constructions and saving water in a very big way. if you really see this subject deeply you can realise that right from manufacturing of red brick to the curing of the walls after or before plastering we are wasting precious water. dry walls right from manufacturing to end product require very less water. also not required plastring

we are following the world for all tecnical assitance i feel we should follow them in construction methods and save water continously by using these systems

I think for better water managment,  leakages should be avoided as far as possible throughout the water distribution system .iIt has been seen that there is heavy negligence seen in the maintanance of water distribution system & it should be rectify seriously by adoption of advanced systems which can save enormous quantity of water.

Stop leakages & wastege

idea posted by Shiv Pal Project Manager, ADMAC

Well there is lot of water which got wasted due to pipeline leakages and that is unnoticeable. Well looking at the figure in UK "Public water supply amounted to 7.2 billion cubic metres of which 1.8 million was lost through leakage." according to National Statistic UK.
There is no problem to get more water from saltination plants and that will be solar based or wind power based, but need to manage the distibution system for better water management.

Rain Water Harvesting Structures & Waste Water Treatment Plants

idea posted by Chandramouli Sr. Manager - QS & Contracts

Rain Water Harvesting Structures are for stopping runoff. In most of the cities it is implementing as 'Rain Water Harvesting Pits'. And in rural areas it can be done by construction of 'Percolation Tanks', 'Checkdams', 'Mini Irrigation Tanks' etc.,. These structures are useful for water storage purpose aswell as improving groundwater.

In cities the rain water go waste joining along with sewage line. This is very bad idea but its no way. So, the govt. must be take intiate to built more 'Sewage/Waste Water Treatment Plant'. The treated water may be used for agriculture / industrial purposes.

Waste water treatment, like sewer water, to the point it can be reused in domestic water. Orange, California has such a system in their public utilities. This way you recycle the water instead of pumping the entirety of it down the drain.

Convert gulfs to sweet water lakes

idea posted by Abraham Paul Senior Telecom Consultant, FCOMNET- Future Groups

Like what Holland did at the river mouth of Rhine river, it is possible to convert Gulf of Cambay in the river mouth of Narmda as a sweet water lake by constructing dyke across the gulf between maindland at Surat and Bhavnagar side.

Similar projects could be planned in various other river mouths in West Bengal and other places to store the excess river flow and using it for agriculture in the hinderlands with lift irrigation method.

Similarly rainwater harvesting lakes could be formed in many parts of the country using manpower under NAREGA  scheme along with mechanised construction work.

I think for countries having drinking water problem, they should connect all rivers and lakes by canals and use dams etc. for controlling water flow requirements. Excess water to be either given for cultivation of desert areas or for drinking water etc. where it is not available. it will solve most of the problems like floods, shortages etc. if managed effectively using new research and development in technology, etc.

conservation and economy

idea posted by Santosh Kumar Mohanty Civil Engineer-Municipal, Sambalpur University

It is high time to think for artificial under ground reservoirs, recharging aquifers, use of remote sensing data extensively for water conservation. Besides, economic use of water in all aspect is essential. The open canal systems should be replaced with pipe transportation, use of drip, sprinkler and peach irrigation systems should be encouraged, proper maintenance of water supply systems in urban areas to check water loses, rainwater harvesting etc. may be considered. Interestingly we can generate hydropower just by adopting new technologies and innovative water management concepts.
