Credit card companies lure customers into buying a credit card by offering it free of cost. Customers, many a time believe that if there is not cost involved in buying it, why not have it?  But there are some cost that are involved in the usage of cards.........

So what are the different charges/fees related to credit cards?

Joining and annual fee

idea posted by Rashmi Chawla Cust. Service Manager, Leading Bank

In order to entice customers into buying a credit card, many credit card companies offer credit cards free of cost  i.e. no joining fees and perhaps exemption from annual fee for a particular period say 1 year after which they will start charging an annual fee.

The joining and annual fee could range from Rs. 1,000 - Rs. 3,000 depending on the type of card.

there are so many different charges so if u are having any credit card or u r going to get a new credit card pls esquire about all the charges like annul charge, charges slept if u do not pay whole amount in one shot over limit charges. But at the same time if use it judiciously u can have so many benefits as well.

Duplicate Statement fee

While monthly statements are delivered free of cost to the address of the card holder, request for a duplicate statement in the physical form attracts charges which is typically a fixed sum.

Some credit card issuers also charge for a duplicate e-statement. E.g. Rs. 100 for a bill over 3 months.

Various fees..

Credit card business model is a complex one as it is on rolling daily usage of customer unsecured credit. It has two main customers (Issuing part - Credit Card holder and Acquiring side - Merchant).

Card holder may have to pay Annual fee, Late fee, Interest, Cheque pickup fee, additional card holder fee, ATM cast advance fee, International transactions fee, Balance Transfer fee, Easy Pay Installment fee etc.. but these are not creating huge profits as we all see in any banks profit statement.

Other hand, merchant fee (if POS terminal is provided) and interchange fee (for each transaction) are per transaction and if a Card holder is using his/her card for shopping, that is where banks will start making money.
