After all, when Google was originally working on a mobile platform, it was much more similar to BlackBerry or Windows Mobile with a smaller screen and a hardware keyboard. But then, Apple changed the smartphone game in January 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone. |

Google has an advantage of advertising. It is always good in promoting and selling. Till now Google folks have sold each and everything (Orkut exception). Android is no where an exception.
On top of that Android is first mobile platform which is freely available to people. Opening it in free domain has put additional advantage to it.
As it is open so there will be big support in future so new folks will be more inclined to work on android instead cocoa platform. I do not know how much distance has android covered but its catching up speed is amazing compare to others...
Google announced its Android OS as open source... But the problem in the Android OS is they are releasing the versions in every six months and stopped with 2.2 Froyo. Most of the devices are using Android 2.1 only some operators are allowing to upgrade....
