GM crops are genetically modified to have reduced susceptibility to pests are promoted as a solution to low food yields in developing countries. The motive of these promoters is profit, not altruism. "Monsanto", one of the largest developers of genetically modified crops, has developed a grain that gives an improved crop and is sterile, so instead of keeping back some seeds for the next year's sowing, farmers must return to the supplier for more.

The US Food and Drug Administration has said that genetically modified crops will receive the same consideration for potential health risks as any other new crop plant. This stance is taken despite good reasons to believe that specific risks may exist.

So users, according to you all, what are the health risks of GM foods?

Its just like consuming poision indirectly.

B.t., or Bacillus thuringiensis, is a naturally occurring bacterium that produces crystal proteins that are lethal to insect larvae. B.t. crystal protein genes have been transferred into corn, enabling the corn to produce its own pesticides against insects such as the European corn borer.

If a pesticide is sprayed from the outside we can wash it of cleanly and consume it, but if the plant itself is producing the pesticedes within itself then how to clean it? If those pesticides can kill a pest or an insect, why cant it affect we human beings in one or the other way. A point to remember is all living things contain same type of DNA, though they may function differently

ya.it may be true but we have no proof to confirms its adverse effects.. so its better to do the same trials as we do in clinical research by doing on random subjects or volunteers and know its effects on us.. then we can comment on it that it is poisonous to us.

Pregnant mothers eating GM foods may endanger offspring

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

Embryo development can be adversely affected by tiny amounts of substances in the mother’s diet. A pregnant mother’s diet may even alter gene expression in children and be passed on to future generations. GM crops may contain substances that impact normal fatal development, but have never been adequately tested for these effects.

Frankly i am surprised being naive as I am. Not a single Genetically modified aubergine or any such of that food stuff had ever hit the market. How can anyone talk or debate about health risks. Or we again trickling down another Himalayan (Glacial) blunder without any general proof. I wonder who has proved all these ailments enumerated here, are caused by those wicked GM things. I never had any inkling that General Motors was that bad.  No offense. Science based on Timbuctoo samples may be good news snippets and another grant for the next academic year .Proof is all we need before we castigate the concept of GM food as another Lysenko affair. After all the last time i read science, it was indignant about lack of general proof.

Chances of Cancer

Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone is injected into dairy cows in US and elsewhere, to increase milk production. Milk from treated cows has much higher levels of IGF-1, a hormone considered to be a high risk factor for breast, prostate, colon, lung and other cancers. The milk also has lowered nutritional value, increased antibiotics and more pus from infected udders.
