Corporal Punishment (CP) is an accepted way of life in schools and at homes. Daily children get abused in form of punishments in schools & colleges. Teachers do it with the intention to correct the child but it degrades the child more.

Moreover, teachers are not aware what the child is feeling inside & what will be the after effect on his behaviour. Thus, children's go many psychological changes that results into unwanted & dangerous outcomes.

So, what are the ill-effects of school punishments on children??

Depression

idea posted by Kavitha Shankar Sr/Principal Coresspondent, ABC

Students remain under depression that affects them psychologically. Their mind gets heavily affected & in some cases they go into comma or commit suicide. Parents also don't support their children & again beat them when the teachers complain against them.

So, teachers & parents need to work on it....or else they will lose the child.

Loss of self-confidence

Suicide is an extreme step , and out of the thousands who undergo the punishment , a few might resort to this.

But a majority of the others , who do not take this extreme step , will still be scarred , in some cases , for life.

One bad thing about CP is the public humiliation ; it is very rare that the punishment happens in private ; even if it happens in private , the mental scars will eventually surface.

The second thing is that CP invariably happens because the victim is unable to retaliate ; either due to age or due to societal conditioning.

The third thing is that the CP brings about a feeling of "I am useless" in the victim ; such punishment is given because there is no other way of making the victim understand , which means the victim is so dumb that he cannot be made to understand in any other manner.

Lastly , the resentment that the victim feels has no outlet ; it gets bottled up , and will ultimately be released , of course at a price.

Inferiority complex

In olden times ,school punishment was synonimous of improvement in the learning standard of a child..parents used to tell teachers give us "skelten" and take away "flesh".The meassage: the child should be well versed in every department so that his future  remains safe and they die peacefully. In modern times, beating or punishment in school is obsolete, because of varying source of study material and parent's ambitions seeing their children at the zenith. The punishment distrub the psyche of the child and he/shi is confused .This results in inferiority complex and retards hie/her progress.

Physical punishment is a common practice at schools in Indo-Pakistan.
The popularity of this custom is based on following reasons.

1. The Education System - More emphasize is normally given on marks rather then material that is learnt.

2. Overall environment of home.

3. Low literacy rate.

4. Mostly those people adopt this teaching profession who can't get good jobs in other fields.

It is Intelligence and self awareness that Human per say have quite distinct. When at wits end (don't know intellectually what to do or how to handle, and having lost self awareness) that HUMAN restores to punishment in physical form, so naturally the KID who is very much HUMAN would wonder the TYPE of creature that is punishing it; and the person looses the stand of being a "True Teacher" or "Parent" (PAY-RENT" -- is how child should be looked at by parents as a trustee for the "rented!!" child)

there should some way to control the excessive for of punishmentand evolve some form of punishment which makes the child realise he is making a mistake, but the punishment is such that it does not affect him mentally to take such extreme steps

improve teaching methods so as to inculcate interest in studies among students

It is for sure that every one of us have undergone such a situation during our school days. Of course children in school days have to be shaped in a way so as to become responsible citizens of our country, besides instilling academic syllabus in their minds. It is a huge responsibility of the teachers to balance between teaching and managing pranks of school students. However, physical torture is a strict 'no'. Instead teachers should try to adopt innovative and interesting ways to win the hearts of the students and their minds towards studies. There are a lot of literature and material available on teacher training available in the education department I guess. It would be appropriate for the Government to form a committee to study and pick out the appropriate teaching methods and come out with a universal solution and train the teachers accordingly. B.V.
