Mentoring is a wonderful experience one can have. It can build ones life & can also destroy it. Mentoring is way to guide somebody or help to identify one inner strengths & weakness. But the process may be easy for some people & difficult for many.

So, what are the possible issues in mentoring??

Perception

Both the mentor & the mentee have to work on each others perception & be open to each other. Each of them should be ready to learn from each other. They should respect each others thoughts & be truthful throughout their relationship.

I agree with kirti on the subject. The mentor in our corporate world is also known as godfather so the mentor will always will be on positive side instead of negitive to whom he/she is mentoring.

not the right kind of support

Mentoring has a key element which is that the mentor has to EDUCATE the mentored. The one thing the mentor should NOT be is a solution provider. He should be a teacher, a sounding board and a guide. He should listen and point out the pros and cons. He should often be the devil's advocate.

He should guide the mentored towards success in a subtle way as if the success is exclusively due to the efforts of the mentored. This alone will boost self confidence,.

The true measure of success is when the mentored himself becomes a mentor!!!

Perception, yes ...

Perception is the key thing. Stephen Covey says, the way we look at our problems, is the problem. Perceptions becomes attitudes which decide our behavior. But what do perceptions come from ? Values or basic principles of life. This is where a spiritual (not necessarily religious) understanding of life helps : the realization that I have a body but am not confined by it, that others are my larger Self, that I am not my failures, that I am responsible for myself, that I am never a victim of circumstances, that if my past shaped my present, by remolding my present (mainly attitudes and lifestyle), I can shape my future, etc.

Mentoring can be teacher  or student ( manager or employee whatever the case be) oriented. It need not be always teacher oriented. Otherway can also be beneficial. Only thing is to see that knowledge & expertise is imparted for the good.

Generation Gap (i.e. Technology, Learning Styles etc)

Mentors largely lack with technological developments (e.g. usage of computers) and the learning styles of those days differs from the modern world therefore mentors always have a differnt approach and view points in sharing the expertise with the mentee who is much associated with modern blues.

nomalizing

Mentor and mentee should strive to achieve normalization of wavelength, i may take more time achieving this. Mentorship in a quick form suffers acceptance, rejections due to mismatch, which can be observed as disrupted communication between mentor and mentee.

The process is more at identifying a specific target for a mentee and helping him/her achieving it. during such process many things can be set right including negativity, time management, upgrading benefits, etc.

Each individual suffers from opinions accumulated from past. whether they some can be taken forward or transformed should be dealt with eagerly

THANK YOU KIRTI.

ONE WHO OFFERS MENTORSHIP SHOULD HAVE VIRTUES LIKE BROAD MIND AND MUST NECESSARILY HAVE A PARENTAL ATTITUDE,SO THAT WRONG DOINGS ARE ACCEPTED,CORRECT GUIDANCE IS ALWAYS GIVEN,RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION ARE GIVEN TO ENCOURAGE.SHOULD NOT BE SELFISH AND SHOULD HAVE AN OPEN MIND WITHOUT ANY EXPECTATIONS.

Thanks for  the referral Ms Kirti

Sometimes when the mentee becomes better than the mentor it can lead to jealousy.
