India has an extensive road network of more than 3 million kms which is  the second largest in the world,  Roads carry about 60% of the freight and  nearly 85% of the passenger traffic, Highways/Expressways constitute about 66,000 kms. The Government of India spends about Rs.18000 crores (US $ 4 billion) annually on road development. So what are the modern trends happening in the Highway construction, which requires a fair share of light, So do share your views on this.

Use of Modified Bitumen

idea posted by Abhik Datta Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers
There are certain additives or blend of additives called as bitumen modfiers can improve properties of Bitumen and bituminous mixes. When bitumen treated with these modifiers is known as modified bitumen, there are two types of it like Polymer modified bitumen(PMB) and crumb rubber modified bitumen(CRMB)and should be used only in wearing course depending upon the requirements of extreme climatic variation.

Abhik a good  point you are making here modified bitumen has so many advantages like it has a lower susceptibility to temperature variations, it has better adhesion b/w aggregates and binder, and mainly prevents cracking.

I had presented paper on it Sir........and yes it is useful in the areas what u had mentioned........so I agreed with u....also i had mention positioning in the points....no issues i totally agee with u......

My only submission is that give right answer to the question raised. but let me tell you even the construction machinery now a days has started coming with GPS contrlols. Not for operation but for control over its misuse and idling. This is specially very useful in cross country projects like road, pipeline, canal and transmission lines.

That is why I said although indirect but GPS has found its application in construction.

You have accepted without research.

Yes I agree Mr. Vivek it is used in transportation ....these are the few aspects of GPS which will help road user

  1. Basic Modules of GPS are Digital map database, Positioning, Map-matching, Route planning, Route guidance, Human-machine interface and Wireless communications.
  2. GPS with the use of GIS can be successfully applied in three fields of transportation engineering namely, Automatic vehicle location, General fleet operation and Dynamic route guidance.

Fly Ash in Concrete

idea posted by Pradeep Khanna Construction-Heavy, DLF

Fly ash, a residue of burning coal, which has generally been considered as a waste material is becoming a very useful material in road construction, by which the road has reduced heat of hydration, improved workability, lower permeability, gives long term strength, and it also gives better performance in aggressive environment.

I guess every highway or road construction ppl should use this technique by which there will be less potholes and better roads in the coming days!!!!!!

It is not only Concretre where fl ash has got its place ,in fact Highway construction is readily using fly ash significantly as substitute to natural soil.At the same time its use is also mandatory as per regulation also.

Economical Design

idea posted by Devarajan Venkataraman Construction-Heavy, DLF
Improve  safety by understanding the objective, like  having hollow cores in the beam, slabs and walls. And creating situation specific design with available material should be done. Finally there should be long term view  in the design for future capacity.

Yes Mr. Venkat you are right. Safety should be the most necessary things which should be given priority in today's date where daily traffic is growing and consecutively accidents are growing.

Safety and Toll barriers

idea posted by Shiv Pal Project Manager, ADMAC

We are not making highways we are having a very serious problem with our road safety. We should have to have a seperate corridor for Heavy vechicals and a nice enjoyable roads others. Which is no where seen in future, by that time keep ur seet belts on and be carefull.

The Second trend which is still going is toll barriers and due to PPP projects and this will be on increase.

Cement concrete roads with controlled concrete.

idea posted by SB DIKSHIT STATE QUALITY MONITOR, U.P.R.R.D.A

Since most the area through which roads are passing are water logged ,hence cement concrete roads are being constructed with controlled concrete (RMC)from RMC PLANTS. This concrete is laid by paver of full two lanes and then rolled by vibratory ,static rollers, giving a very good and durable roads, all weathered .
