BEING A MANAGER, YOU KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS

idea posted by Manoj Kumar Sr: Manager - QA, ARCHETYPE GROUP, INDIA
Managers who try to pretend that they know the answers of all the problems are those who often try to demonstrate their value to their teams but fail. Managers face tough time in finding the answers, but hesitate to communicate the problem with other team members. They don't realize that making the team members involved in decision-making and sharing concerns always help in finding a proper answer or solution to a particular problem. There may be someone in the team who might provide a better solution. So, accept it

Being located at helm of affairs, managers have all informations from subordinates and also know the plans and projections of top management, by coordinating they get all answers.

to some extent being manager you know all the answers is correct. This is only possible when the Manager has earlier worked at all levels and involved himself as a team member and much aware of the work environment and work knowledge. If the Manager does not know the work, then every subordinate will take a ride. Therefore a Manager should know entire gamut to guide his team as well as deliver best quality services/goods

A team of young budding Managers were given an assignment to measure the height of a flagpole. So the Managers discussed and put up a project plan with roles and responsibilities. The manager who was responsible for organizing the resources went out and got a ladder and a tape. The tape measure was just the ordinary tape of 6 feet.
The lead manager assigned another manager to go on top of the pole and start the measure. They were falling off the ladders, dropping the tape measures - the whole thing was just a mess.
An Engineer came along and saw what they' were trying to do. He walked over pulled the flagpole out of the ground, laid it flat, measured it from end to end, gave the measurement to one of the managers and walked away.
After the Engineer went away, one manager turns head to another and laughs. "Isn't that just like an engineer? We're looking for height and he gives the length"

Moral of the story:

No matter how good an engineer you are, The "Managers" always find a fault in you.

Managerial skill is not a inborn quality its acquired quality

idea posted by latha sivan Senior HR, Anmol Technologies
Many managers think they have inborn quality to manage the team but it is not true, it is achieved by learning and will be improved only when we practice it. These skills are not inborn. They have to learn and keep on learning to be a good manager.

I agree with mr. sheriff , a manager in maintenance should have technical skil also with the capability to manage the team members & know the working of members. He should know how a person do the best in condition.

I have seen countles companies and managers fall for this one... The moment a new product/service/fad hits their industry, it becomes a "must have"... The old way is sometimes the best way, simply because it works...and as my dad taught me..."Don't try to fix something that's not broken" ;-)

On projects, managers are solely responsible

idea posted by Puja Sarkar Software Developer , Softpal Technologies Pvt Ltd

While working on any project, each and every person working on it should have an equal share of responsibilities. Everyone should have the opportunity to step up and suggest a solution. It will help to gather different ideas and to choose the best one among many. The sense of responsibility and the feeling of "I am in" can boost up the team members. Kudos or kicks, focusing on just the managers is not a good thing to do.

MANAGERS ARE SELF-CENTRED AND THEY MOVE WITH AN INTENTION TO RULE SOMEONE.  THIS CLEARLY SHOWS THIER CALLOUS ATTITUDE TOWARDS
SUBORDINATES.

THEY SHOULD ENTRUST THE TASK TO ALL TEAM MEMBERS EQUALLY AND SHOULD GIVE EQUAL RIGHTS TO SUGGEST IDEAS SO THAT EVERYONE MAY FEEL FREE IN COMPLETING TASK, MANAGERS SHOULD MAINTAIN IMPARTIALITY IN THIS REGARD.

That being said, a manager that does not know how to delegate responsibility along with the duties, is doomed to failure.

Born to become a leader

idea posted by rosalie de la cruz Civil Engineer -Telecom, UTECH
Being a leader means to lead or manage the group. Some people have their inborn quality to become a manager. Managers lead his subordinates to have a better output. Oftentimes, there are some managers who wouldn't accept their fault and pass it to their subordinates. there are also manager's who wouldn't accept their subordinates opinion and just keep on relying to their self.

Leadership is the property who gives direction to go proper way and with proper management to achive target.Team work is mass product and large amount of delivery. But manager can judge the work and proceedure for that particular work so manager guidance is neccesary as leader and subordinates have to follow them. For any result manager who is leader is responcible for it.

Get the input from team, take your final decision

idea posted by Anand Balasubramanian Deployment Mgr,

As a manager, I strongly believe team's inputs, since they would be key to execute any projects. I give the opportunity to the team to come up with their views and estimate, and final call would be taken by myself, based on my experience and project deadlines. Discuss and convince the team member, where there is a gap and misunderstanding of your team member.

LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT are the same

idea posted by Isaac Madhavan IT / Technical Writer, IT major

  • Leadership & Management are two very different animals.
  • There are many individuals who are Managers, some who are Leaders, and a few who are both.
  • Leadership requires a pioneering spirit. On the other hand, a Manager need not "pioneer" anything.
  • Leadership vs. Management is like Research vs. Engineering.

Myhts Manager!!!

idea posted by Sheethal K Business Development Manager
The qualities that the team member expects in his manager may not be the ideal ones, but the fact that he wants some change in his manager's behavior indicates that there is something that the manager is holding on to, which he should avoid. Very often managers try to live by some seeming expectations of business and simply play out roles, which turns out to be harmful for the team performing for them. This is something which results from some traditional beliefs or myths of management. Let's discuss a few. 1. Managing is about controlling and telling people what to do From a typical manager's point of view, yes it is. But when it comes to manage a team and leading it to an end goal in its true sense, he who follows this is not in the right track. A conscientious manager tries to create excitement about a common goal in the minds of the team members and then influence their ingenuity to achieve that. Simply dictating things and creating a must-do situation often leads to lack of productivity.

Keep the Pressure on

idea posted by Pradeep Saran Technical Expert
Most managers feel that by issuing tight deadlines and constantly reviewing the work progress the task will be accomplished. This is one of the biggest myths because efficiency of the sub-ordinates does increase under slight pressure but decreases with undue coaxing or harrasment. Also the quality of output decreases with pressure and errors increase thereby resulting in further delays.

I'd say that this is among the top three reasons for an employee feeling disenfranchised.

Very true Pradeep. I remember my first sales job. The targets they gave were just CRAZY and meant to "urge" us to achieve...instead it made us feel inadequate and always falling short of the expected outcomes. In later years I learnt to set my own achieveable targets and kept on exceeding them...

I belive not necessary..There can be dark area for any body..But one should always have a positive attitute to learn things which one doesn;t know...I had many a times bad experience during interview..Funny thing..But many managers dint' recruited me because they flet that I am much knowledgable than them..They were under fear that..some body will challenge them ...But being a leader or managers means ...keeping team always motivated and maintaining high sprit of people..Leaders and managers has to guide only to the right direction....most of time they do have to influence people...under their cirle of control or outside...

Being a know-all

idea posted by Jaygopal Raghavan Marketing Manager, Landmark Group
Being a manager, they think they know everything and dont want to listen to either their juniors in office or to the market outside. Often they are driven with over confidence and the ego that their experience is supreme. Once they become a manager and too much power rests with them, they think of themselves as supreme to the others.
