Indian banks have compared favourably on growth, asset quality and profitability with other regional banks over the last few years. The banking index has grown a lot since 2001. Policy makers have made some notable changes in policy and regulation to help strengthen the sector.

These changes include strengthening prudential norms, enhancing the payments system and integrating regulations between commercial and co-operative banks. However, the cost of intermediation remains high and bank penetration is limited to only a few customer segments and geographies.

So I want to ask you people, according to you, what opportunities Indian banks can see in 2010?

High performance

In this year, banks will ensure system stability and protection of consumer interests, leaving managements free to drive far-reaching changes. Changes in regulations and bank capabilities will reduce intermediation costs leading to increased growth, innovation and productivity. Banking will become a driver of GDP growth and employment will increase.

Financial inclusion, technological up gradation( mainly for PSBs), growing rural markets will increase credit-deposit ratio and hence money supply will increase to sustain the asset prices. Cost of fund must be kept low through proper synchronization of short term financing and short term funding which will also reduce asset- liability mismatch. Hot money should be employed. Access to foreign markets can be another opportunity for strong domestic banks

concentration in rural areas.

Indian banks or not concentrating in rural areas even though their main agenda is rural.  the banking habits and services what we are getting in urban cities is not the same in rural areas and the rural people niether seen nor even tasted that.  Many policies are framed by govt and banks to serve the rural people but they reamined to books only. lack of infrastructure and devloping strong community channels are becoming big headache for banks to implement the policies.  it will be very strange to heard many of you know this or not most banks in india are not willing to implement even the subsidised loan schemes framed by govt of india to strengthen the rural credit also becuase of only one reason security creation and marketability is very big problem for them.  hence government and banks once again has to review and reframe all their policies so that rural credit may be strengthen which will create many opporutnities in the economy.
