The GDP growth of 8.9% in 2QFY11 is a resounding validation of the India growth story. India has effectively endured a global crisis and the worst drought in 30 years. It continues to be one of the fastest growing economies - its GDP is likely to grow at 9% in FY11 and well into FY12.

India enjoys a special demographic advantage. With over 200 million households, India is not only a huge consumer market but also an attractive investment destination. However, the journey is unlikely to be smooth - a number of speed-breakers and roadblocks will be encountered along the way. So, what are the possible threats to India's growth story??

Lack of radical reforms

idea posted by Namrata Pathak Accounts Manager, American Express

According to me lack of radical reforms has shown up in high consumer inflation which, though is trending down, but still continues to persist. The rising global commodity prices are adding further fuel to the fire. Interest rates are headed up. The speed with which the reforms process is progressing is less than desirable. Hence this is one such possible threat to India's growth story.

Lack of radical reforms and improved infrastructure (power, health and sanitation, roads, communication, networking, internet, etc.) facilities may impede the growth of the nation. Thanks for the referral, Namrata....

We are the threat to our own growth

idea posted by Gopala Krishnan.H CMD, DJA-Inc

Criminal minded persons enter politics, become governing body and start looting. We should educate the public. Support the idea of max age to politics and ministers etc. Looted money plays a big role in next election and cycle continues. People should be allowed to vote even against all candidates.

Failing Administrative and Judiciary System

idea posted by Niraj S Kakkad Manager - Investments

Our country has over the last few years uncovered some of the largest failures in our administration be it managing sectors such as telecom, agriculture distribution, corporate frauds, corruption in administrative offices .We are also observing a constant reduction of faith of common man from the judiciary given some suspect convictions, be it gas tragedy, or abuse of power by senior officials. These are the pillars of any country's well being, for our country's growth these two systems need an immediate ramp up as they presently seem to be the biggest looming threat to india's growth. If governance is good  our country is bound to grow

The biggest threat to any civil society historicaly has been its own people devoid of any long term focus ,gols vision . A society devoid of any values and binds. WE ARE THE BIGGEST HYPOCITES,SOCIETY DRIVEN BY GREED,LUST FOR FINANCIAL WEALTH AT A COST UNTNIKABLE. GUIDED BY PREPOSTEROUS MINDS..... PRESENT DAY GROWTH STORY IS MORE INCIDENTAL AND ACCIDENTAL RATHER THAN STRATEGIC ,CONTIGENT AND PLANNED. We will be hit by empty ,criminal minds on one hand as much with theocratic and fundamental minds on the other. sanjay singhal

PRESERVING THE DEMOCRACY

And reducing the parties to maximum 5.and instead of allocating election symbols the candidates photo would be the ideal option, this will result in better efficiency in the performance of the contesting party nd candidate, to be sucessful for democracy the AADHAR CARD should made Mandatory by coming election if not by next election and reducing the term from 5 years to 3 years, the ideal would be 1 year.

Incompetence of our social security system

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

Basically, we are a society of "hors d'oeuvre".We think small portion taken before a meal will do us favour and do no harm. The "Times of India" dated 22nd December,20102 carried a report published by World Bank that 70% of Economic Impact on GDP in 06 Health-Related.Poor sanitation which causes diseases like diarrhoea, lower respiratory infections etc.It therefore suggests that if India wants to maintain strong economy and maintain growth, municipal corporations must be allocated adequate funds to improve facilities right from village level to urban centers.Healthy people and t Healthy economy.

LACK OF MORAL VALUES.......

idea posted by Manish Lalla M.M.S student, H &GHM INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT
A serious challenge that faces India is ensuring that the fruits of progress are not restricted to just a few. The bottom one-third of India's 1-billion-plus population still lives below a contentiously-defined 'poverty line'. The prevailing economic and social inequality is already fuelling social unrest and insurgencies in various pockets of the country. Relations with neighbouring countries, especially Pakistan and China, need to be effectively managed. Subsidies do not reach the people they are targeted at. For instance, kerosene is underpriced because it is supposed to be used by the poor for cooking and lighting and also aimed at discouraging the use of wood for burning. However, it is illegally diverted to adulterate diesel and petrol because of price differentials and is smuggled out of the country. Similarly, diesel prices have still not been fully deregulated due to the direct impact of higher diesel prices on inflation. Diesel is used to power generator sets used in irrigation and to fuel trucks that carry agricultural products, raw material and finished products. However, the unintended beneficiaries are owners of luxury cars and SUVs, who can do without the fuel subsidy. India levies high taxes on petroleum products - half the selling price of petrol and nearly a third the price paid by consumers of diesel go towards various imposts levied by the state and central governments. High petro-product subsidies have a negative impact on India's fiscal health, which, too, eventually culminates in higher inflation. A more holistic approach to fuel pricing - including the possibility of lower imposts on petro products - is necessary in India's context.

Politics & systems

Some breakers & road blocks I have identified, Hopefully it will be relevant. Politics • proper system to restrict the criminals/corrupt ppl in politics • min education criteria for entry in politics • fix retirement age for politicians Education System • proper system & it’s monitoring for Free Education for poor’s • Quality of Education – not result oriented especially in govt schools where the % age of students is more. • control on cost of education • reserve quota for higher education Corruption • Strong punishments/action against corruption • Strong judiciary system with time & result bounded. • More transparency to control it

WRONG PRIOIRITIES

idea posted by nagesh rao Freelancer, Freelancer

Rather than concentrating on over all growth consisting of Agriculture,Industrialization and Employment generation Projects, Govt. is supporting capitalism by allowing windfall profits to the capitalists thereby corrupting the whole system & in the name of development building bridges, roads & international airport under private partnership & allowing these companies to charge exorbitant airport fee & toll gate fee, with poor or nil maintained Roads. The Irony is to avoid traffic jams these roads, flyovers has-been constructed but see the long traffic jams near the toll gate give room to suspicion that whether we constructed these flyovers/Roads to free movement of traffic or to create huge traffic jams.

Better have a proper reform suitable for Indian Economy in the larger interest of Common People. Do not worry/care for FDI, if our economy is strong & disciplined, investments are bound to come to us. Have policies/reforms & monitor constantly to enable common people to enjoy benefits & bring down  huge disparity between Rich & Poor. Thanks Namrata.

SELF SERVICING

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Putting self serving ahead of all other reasons is the biggest threat. Anyone from leaders, politicians, bureaucrats to populace as also including growing unemployed and of course not to forget the thus christened criminals. Each and Everyone only thinks of self this by itself is the biggest block that fails one to realise the differences between human and animal being in organised or mayhem. How many spare time and energy to think of the nation or its interest's as also its cohabitants and resources.

failing of administrative & judiciary system because of less bothered citizens (i.e everyoe who put their personal interest before nations interest). Its we who are the biggest threat to our growth. We posses greater threat to our growth by being less responsive to our corrupt netas, poor governament, lobbyist businessman and by either casting our vote to wrong candidates or ny not casting it.

China and cheap labour...

idea posted by Jaygopal Raghavan Marketing Manager, Landmark Group
To understand the impact one has to examine the issue in depth and sector wise. In most sectors other than IT, our biggest threat would be China. They can match if not better what we have to offer at a brisk pace. In IT we have threat from lesser facnied countries like Phillipines to an extent because the advantage of an english speaking base is eroded. Phillies as they are called speak english and that too with a natural twisted accent. But within the IT industry in Intelectual services like programming we still retain the edge. For how long is anybody's guess. In the export of humar resources ie., labour we face stiff competition from China and lesser asean countries like Vietnam and Myanmar where labour is cheaper than in india.

Lack of Youth Participation, Over population and Legal system,

idea posted by Ishan Dave Animation & Film Making
These are the Major factors which are threats to india's growth story... The youth of india take part in debate for improvements in politics..but never attempt to enter in politics & show the country the real youth power... Government is trying to control population of india by various ways..by diferent campaigns , laws & regulations ..but still people follow their own path to get the favor of their cast or so called social group & make the larger families without any thought about their future survival.. India's legal system is called as equal for all indians..but in reality it is not...we live in democracy , but we don't have norm to speak against power...when a common man commits a crime ..the court gives a punishment immediately..but when a politician makes a scam..it becomes a big issue..not for the punishment they get..but because of a question mark...will they get punished???? This are the main important factors which really affects india's progress...
