A lawyer should be clear in expressing his views and should understand that it is not enough for him alone to understand that his client is right but to prove it to the judge and to the others concerned with the case. A successful lawyer stands by his point and does not easily agree to statements made against his client. In handling the opponent’s tricky questions to make a lawyer disagree with his own client, a lawyer must be alert and tackle the situation smartly, thus having people think in his favor. A successful lawyer must have quick thinking to handle difficult situations in the court.

Dear friends, a lawyer should have excellent communication skills not just to argue in the court, appease the media, but also to converse with their client of any gender, religion, race, color or creed, discuss issues with other lawyers, perhaps even the opposing lawyer in a court case. Communication skills are expansive and are a pinnacle quality of a top lawyer. Clear, effective writing is one of the most important skills a lawyer should develop. Law is a service profession. Good service depends on good communication. Good communication must be relevant, focused and timely.

Heralding from a family of lawyers, and myself bein the only female in the profession, what I have gathered from my father, that a lawyer apart from being well versed in the subject should also possess oratory skills. Actually lawyers anywhere, have to do a lot of talking, and hence should shed of any communication barriers. another important thing that I have learnt is that it is not only important to mug up your books but its more important to apply your mind!!!another most important thing that is true for all successful lawyers is that, (though most might not admit) they should know, understand and can play politics!!!that is be politically matured. by that i mean the polotics of everyday life.

A lawyer should be a good listener.

A lawyer should be a good communicator.

A lawyer should be a legal knowledgeable.

A lawyer should be a regular reader and equip with up to date legal knowledge.

A lawyer should know computer.

A lawyer should have decision maker.

A lawyer good advisor  to his client and honest towards his client and profession.

A lawyer should be social person and dynamic and good friend to the court in his case.

A lawyer should be optimist and having 100% hope in his case. he never loose damper and have patience.

A good lawyer should be like a classic stylish batsman, who selects and plays his shot according to the merit of the ball - Class Par Excellence - Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Brian Lara, Rickie Ponting...., to name a few.

Similarly, a Lawyer should select a case according to the merit of the case and plead with clarity to win the case.  He should plead the case in such a way that the verdict given by the Judge should not be contested again in the higher court (Not like when the field umpire fails to adjudge a situation, passing on his baton to the third umpire!)

This process poisons the system and slowly kill the fairness of legal profession! This profession carries hefty price tag as one surges in the number of wins!  One should be very careful about to the "Means to an End" and not focussing on "End" alone, as most of the professionals are currently following!

I do feel that the qualities to become a successful lawyer, can not be codified. He needs all good qualities. He requires patience, courage, speed, communication, presentation, sacrifice, willingness to work hard, knowledge, command over current affairs, knowledge about society, logical mind, critical view and an understanding of human phsychology. I respect my profession so much and I know its greatness. A true advocate is very powerful as he posses variety of qualities. Legal profession is a long learning profession and but, the dignity of profession is being eroded. Young legal professionals should be prepared to work hard and be patient when they enter into profession and if they think for instat money, then, they may not be concentrating on developing the required qualities and in the long run, such a person who ignores the ability, may not sustain.

While pleading a lawyer should be clear of his views based on the principles of natural justice, jurisprudence and due to his pleading if any judgement is given in the competent court it should form a precedent and due to which the lives of all beings is saved, secured and survived.

one has to be well versed with the amendments in law, new case laws, detail study of the case ur appearing for. Ur own positive decission, ready to take help of seniors or other lawyers who have gone thru such cases in past and ofcuourse self confidence to win a case

If the lawyers adopt little ethics and maintain truth and justice by practicing the justified and lawful attitude, more importantly reduction of  stripping the justified cases and the society just for winning the case in the name of "PROFESSION" and deny the truth and justice especially to the genuine, poor, deprived would qualify the more towards successful and contented advocates!!

Lawyer being an officer of Court and being an inalienable part of Judiciary his honesty, updation with facts and Law with brave attitude to chip in where he can contribute for the betterment of system is one of the key factors that brings him success.
