No proper ventilation

idea posted by Surabhi Sinha Project Manager, Ispat Inds
In most of the manufacturing plant there is no proper ventilation system, the heat that is produced is not properly exhausted out. This creates many health issues for the employees /workers. So the manufacturing plants should have proper exhaust facilities for the heat, dust and other hazard particles to get out without affecting the workers...

Yes I also agree with you, in some companies management not take initiative to take safety aids & precautionary points. In my last company I give suggestion on ventilation in plant to install roof ventilator. They give me award for this. But they install after 2 years.

Yes,it is true that most of the plants does not show interest in providing proper ventilation. To be fact that these provisions must be installed prior to commissioning of any plant.

There must be the safety shlogaon hang on all the walls of the work shop in a proper manner that every one can read these properly. Of cource the awareness plays a very important roll in the safety there must be a awareness program conducted at least once a week to educate the people about safty.

Fool-proof sytem for electrical earthing

idea posted by AMAL BHATTACHARYYA Freelancer, Industrial Products/Heavy Machinery

If the electrical earthing is not proper or unreliable due to improper maintenance, chances of accident will increase

Take Proper Shutdown

idea posted by BALASUBRAMANYA Asst. Manager/Manager (Technical), KIOCL ltd.

in any industry especially in a continues process industry it is absolutely essencial to take shutdown on the equipment/machinery,we are working.sometimes the job to be carried out will be of lesser duration for which we never think of shutdown.another reason  is the distance of the isolator of the drive from the work spot. While taking shutdown one should also make sure that he has taken  proper shutdown on the equiment to work with.for this a proper shutdown register suould be maintained with the required details.

I agree sir,

Along with that, maintenance team should be provided with lock out and tag out devices which further ensures a safe maintenance procedure. Plus the production and utility staff should be informed well in advance before maintenance activity is carried out.

Awarness is most powerfull. Eventhough fullprof systeam is provided but if the operator is not aware of it, it would turn in to disaster. Awarness include training, pep talk about the day to day activity, which many times ignored due to routin nature i.e chalta hai yar.

idea posted by Pokharkar shivaji Tukaram Asst. Manager/Manager (Technical), Sunshine Oleochem tld

I have seen no of accident over the period of 25 years of service because of neglegence

Un trained technecian, lack of safety awareness, Process short cut, Neglegency in proper maintenace of safety devices like safety valves, interlocks etc. Over confidence of short vision managers etc

safety situation in most of the manufacturing plants is very similar to the Ad which was shown few yeras before on Doordarshn channel....Driver is about to croos the railaway track..and he says "kuch pharak nahi padta"....he dies in accident and then says "Pharak to padata hai bhai"

Right tools for the right job

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

Using a right to tool to right job considerably avoids accident. Make-shift equipments / tools are unsafe. That is to say that, a screw driver is to be used as screw driver but not as a chisel / jumper pin. Most of the project people fails to provide right tools in good working conditions, for example, a hammer with broken shaft or with a metal handle that is not vibration proof.

Keep the safety switches healthy

idea posted by BALASUBRAMANYA Asst. Manager/Manager (Technical), KIOCL ltd.

all the safety switches like side travel switches, pull cord switches, emergency push buttons,pressure / flow switches etc; should be kept in operational condition and no switch should be kept by passed.if kept bypassed it should be of minimum duration and all the concerned persons should be aware of it.this is just to avoid stoppage of production and not a regular habit.

Awareness of the emergency procedures

idea posted by T_Aswin Manager Projects, Shasun Chemicals & Drugs Limited

Most of the time the shifts are manned by shift-in-charge & his team. It is very essential that the people responsible are aware of the emergency shutdown procedures & also the precautions while re-starting the plant. Not having the knowledge of the emergency procedure can lead to permanent damage which can be costly. Even though the interlocks are there to ensure the safe shutdown but human intervention is required-

Simple example - imagine there is a situation in which boiler is shutdown due to emergency- if the shutdown is for longer duration then the engineer should ensure the boiler shell doesn't develop vacuum as any engineer should know that when steam condenses it creates lower pressure and this can lead to the boiler shell buckling.

Another example- if the furnace is shutdown is for some time after emergency it is always recommended that the furnace be purged with purging steam or at-least by blowers. This is to ensure that there is no accumulation of fuel gas inside the box ( when u ignite the accumulated fuel gas it can really blast the furnace. I have it seen it in close proximity)

Safety rules and practices.

idea posted by Shashi Kumar U Manager accounts & commercial, Mazda Concrete Products Pvt Ltd
There should be a proper safety system in place. An organization should have a safety manual that lays down safety guide lines, mode of using safety equipments, rules and regulations to be followed and steps to be taken in case of emergency. Employees should be given proper training and instructions about safety. Depending upon the size and nature of industry there should be a safety officer who will ensure that proper safety equipments and procedures are followed. There should be periodical review of such practices.
