Often patients suffer a lot because of mishandling of the drugs they purchase. Due to improper handling, many a times, either the drug don't effect it is supposed to act or acts negatively. In majority of the cases, all this problems occur because of ignorance about proper way of drug handling. Thus I want to ask you people what are the safety measures we should keep in mind while handling medicines?

Knowing the date of expiry is important

idea posted by Anita Rai Marketing Manager, Leading Pharmaceutical Co.

When medications expire, they often don't work as well. In fact, certain out-of-date medications may even be harmful. To ensure we don't accidentally consume an expired drug, its better to clean out the medicine cabinet periodically and throw away any medications that have changed color or produced a residue, any aspirin or acetaminophen that has a strange smell or texture, and all expired eye drops. If we are unsure about the safety of a medication we own, it is important to speak with the doctor.

First my kind request is to stop selling medicines in small grocery shops where the people are buying vegetables & other household things.Really it was amazing to see those medicines are sold by small kids in those shops.I am not blaming that shop but I am blaming the people who are buying there. This is real thing happened in Tamilnadu, even I seen that. One father already bought some tablets in vegetable shop for her daughter but that medicine shows different serious sideeffects. Then that father took his daughter  & ran to the hospital .The doctor told the reason why it was happened?.Do u want to know why it was  happened?.That tablet is expired one.Even we crossed 50years of freedom but still people are in uncivilized condition.People should have some knowledge over medicines. How they will get that?.Only thro' medias. It will reach each & every citizen of our soil.Everyone has to follow these steps for safety measures:

1.Check the expiry of the medicines before buying even if it is going to expire within 1 or 2 weeks,

2.Check the medicine with prescription for same dosage & same product before buying,

3.Keep the medicines away from children for safety,

4.Store the medicines in appropriate conditions as per given guidelines even if they don't have facilties, better store it in neighbour  house,

5.Stop self medication because Physician only knows the disease & patient condition  not a Pharmacist.

My Kind request is Medicines are not Toffees to play or enjoy. If it is goes wrong then entire family environment will be change drastically. Please be serious & try to educate the people.God gave us some knowledge so we should share this to everyone who ever we met. This is the general phenomena.

1. Ask you Dr. why he/she is prescribing certain medicines & what 'd be the effects or side effects.

2. Know the same while self medication (should be avoided first) through chemists or net is a very good source.

3.As suggested check for expiry & even the make whether Dr himself/herself has prescribed that particular manufacturer.

Local makes, generic medicines sometimes doesn't yield timely & required results.

4. Keep away from children.

First and foremost, read all the details given on the label of medicines. Also, one should know about drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions before taking medicines. For example, It is best to take NSAIDs and corticosteroids with food or milk to avoid stomach upset while analgesics/antipyretic and antacids should take on an empty stomach. There are certain drugs which are allergic (sulpha drugs, penicillin etc.) and one should check allergic test before consuming these medicines.

Patients at risk from drug interactions include the elderly, children and those with impaired renal or liver function.

In India, there are very few medicines which are specially formulated for children. In many cases doses are calculated logically, so doctors and pharmacists must know the dose of medicines with age restrictions(e.g. chlorpheniramine >1 year).

In short, awareness of pharmacists, doctors and patients about safety of medicines makes more healthy country.

Safe handling and use of medicines can be looked at from

a) Patient Side - Ban dispensing of prescription drugs over counters without doctor advise. Secondly it is important for patients to know about the importance of drug expiry, medication administration protocols, drug over dose and steps to be undertaken in case of such error. This can only be possible through education, mass media, pharmacy initiatives and above all doctor initiative. I believe patients should be educated while dispensing of medications by pharmacists in medicine shops as well as by doctors on drug administration and its ill effects.

b) Provider Side - Hospitals should ensure documentation of medications prescribed by doctors, record administration of drugs by nurses, recording change of medication or doses, use of IT like Physician Medication Order System, drug interaction, constant updating of knowledge, etc. Use of good clinical protocols in hospitals is being adopted in many hospitals to avoid medication errors and ensure safe use.

Strengthening communication between doctors - pharmacists both in provider facilities as well as in outside pharmacies will help ensure safe advise and administration of medication.

Monitor the doses to ensure they're safe

idea posted by Sanjay Saha Product/Brand Manager, Dr Reddy Labs

Typically, a doctor will prescribe a medication based on age, weight, and the minimum amount that is necessary to treat condition. It is extremely important to only take the recommended doses of any medication. Taking too little or too much of a prescription medication can be harmful. Furthermore, we should never share our prescription medication with anyone.

It matters where we keep our medicines

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

Prescription medication should never be kept in a bathroom cabinet because humidity and heat may change the drug's chemical balance. It is always best to store medicines at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. However, some drugs must be refrigerated. We should consult our doctor or pharmacist if we are unsure of how to store our medication. Also, it is important to keep drugs in a safe area out of the reach of children.

knowing side effects & contra indications

Its not only good to take the medicines as it is. it is also eqully advisible for the patient to know whether he is allergic to those medicines. If he is allergic, there may be problems. Apart from that, he also should know the contraindications to avoid the complications while taking multiple medicines.

Yes I agree with you, people should know about the medicine what they are taking and the side effect it will cause. So to make people aware of this, the pharmaceuticals people should tell people about the medicine they give them.

Knowing the manufacturer and the composition is most important...

Some medicines will have the same composition while differ in minute way. It is always safe to check with the doctor before accepting alternate medicines from the drug dealer...

As the saying says....never hide information from a Doctor and Advocate...you should inform the doctor of allergy to any drug or combination.....

Checking the Expiry date is as important as taking the medicine when ill..

We must know when the drug is to be consumed and what food or drugs should not be consumed along with the drug. The route of drug consumption is also important and surely should be kept in mind, in addition to the factors stated here.

Stop self medication...

idea posted by Rajesh K Richhariya G.M., Sales & Marketing

Self medication is buying and taking medicine without doctors advise...

If you are taking medicine because it worked in your friend / neighbor for similar symptoms or you are taking medicine suggested by your chemist and you are fine... must thank GOD as nothing happened to you.

A learned Prof. & scientist took a painkiller as he had pain in his finger. He got a attack, oxygen supply to brain was obstructed & went in coma...

Self medication can be life threatening too. Possible threat in self medication...

  • Drug-Drug interaction
  • Drug reaction
  • Drug action at unwanted site
  • Dose, dose interval etc
