Being in today's job market, experiencing the 'rolling stone' feeling, it might have taken away some job seekers' leverage in a salary negotiation.

But even if you lack that 'positive advantage' in you, that doesn't mean you should fall head over heels and accept the first offer that comes your way. This is a country where we can find some strange pay patterns and as the time goes, the same jobs may find stark differences in salary as the place and firm differs. In such an ambience, to get the best compensation possible without making your potential employer raise an eye brow. Most of IT companies ask you to get latest 3 months salary slip which is enough for them to judge how much hike should they give you. Staffing firms as of now do not ask for salary slips while attending interview however I am pretty straight forward with my current salary & expected salary. If you are not seriously looking for job & just doing window shopping then you can take a chance of quoting your expectation even if it is too too high but yes it does have negative impact also that company might not consider in future if you don't want that to happen then be diplomatic.

Darshana,

payscale.com does not help us (India market) I have been using this site for past 5yrs.  I have been in USA staffing for 5 yrs now.

I have tried to shift to domestic staffing because of family however most of staffing agencies have "indirectly" told me since USA staffing is different from domestic staffing & since this is day shift job I should be willing to work for less how it is possible for anyone who is earning 4 lac P.A to work for 3 lac ( this is what domestic staffing companies have offered me) some even have gone to say I will have to taught recruitment specially screening!! Isn't this ridiculous???

Your advice is highly appreciated.

I would like you to visit the site called payscale.com do check this site regarding all the queries regarding what should be your salary at this point of time based upon your experience and all the other criterias. But according to me asking for a 50% hike is a bit exaggerated...companies can push till 30-35% at the max and beyond that will be really difficult for them as companies policies won't allow them to do so...but in any case if they feel yes the employee is too important for them in special cases they do consider hiking even 50%. while asking for a hike show them what have you achieved till date, as that will set up the base for your negotiation, show them the numbers, achievements that you have under your belt over the period of time and make them realise how important you are to the organization, without you they should feel there will be big void which they cant fill...by making these points you should be able to negotiate in a much better way...

Being a HR I am pretty sure that many job seekers go through a pressure situation when they face the inevitable question like "What's your salary expectation?" "What salary range are you looking for?" "What do you get paid currently?" etc.

Whichever way you may trick yourself out of the question, never give out a first idea about the salary or don't set the figures at the first place. You might not make it to the next stage if you place a high digit. Too low, and an employer will either think you're not qualified or desperate. So, if it's an application form better avoid the question with the diplomatic answer 'not applicable'. If you're forced to say how much you make during the interview process, try giving your "total compensation," which many large employers will break out for you on the company's internal HR website. If you are still pressured to specify an exact figure, try giving out a range, which if low should be the least you can be happy with and which if high will make you really happy.

"pay" follows "position". My experience observing candidates for many years tells me that those who have been "growth" oriented even at the cost of accepting lower pay, end up getting paid handsomely once they grow up the ladder. On the contrary, candidates who focus on higher compensation and have jumped companies at the same level make comparatively far lesser over time. So, till you reach the "top", try not trading your experience for pay. You'll lose more eventually, the opportunity cost. My 2 cents..

yeah, i agree with you, for younger co-ordinates, sky is the limit,; with their innovative skills they can really benefit the country. so, they should achieve some experience/ perfection in their respective areas, then the expected salary may be yours. so they should be calm & patient, bold enough additionally to prove themselves.

Salary is just a variable directly proportional to the experience gained and the number of hours you have tried to learn and improve your skills.

Salary means knowledge. Better knowledge = better salary. Experience can giv u good salary but wat about your satisfaction? One can only b satisfied by intellegence or excellence. So i think g for excellence salary will be better and better automatically.

For deciding the package your skill set plays a most important criteria. If those skill sets are preferred & not available to the Client, it does not matter in getting your nose through to look for more befitting package. Remember, the Client should really desire to have your skills. We can also use various Salary survey report available on-line conducted by various recruiters.

Get More Business

Get more business, increase the profitability of the company, then demand more salary! Salary drawn should be commensurate to one's credentials (qualification, experience, domain expertise, decision making skills and other various parameters) and that too on par with the industry! Excess demand will be accommodated in the initial stages - failure of compliance will pave the way out, then will throw him back to the square one!
