Politics at Workplace

idea posted by Gargi Sinha Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

Friends, according to me every workplace has conflicts, but how the employees and the organization tackle it goes a long way in ensuring the success of the employees as well as the organization. Politics at workplace is complex, and can turn the organization into an ugly and nasty battlefield. The employees can take the things to them at a personal level. This, in turn, can harm their personal and professional lives. But the organization feels the brunt of the continuous politics at workplace when it starts effecting the overall performance, efficiency and productivity of the organization. This is mainly due to the considerable amount of time spent on the politics and thinking about the strategies and the moves, rather than the job and the work.

I agree that especially in private organisation in India there are groupism,s and hence the senior most Manager would always want his boys around him, these guys would do whatever the boss wants ignoring all work ethics as they know that their boss is close to the Chairman and also weilds  a strong political  influence with the political boses or the parent foriengn major stake holderof the company.

These Senior Managers indulge in corrupt practices of channelising the booty both in cash & kind from supply chains, agents , contractors through the boys of theirs who are normally given in return rewards, good apprisal preformance cards and even recommended for promotion to the next level.

A poor employee who does not toe the line is labelled as a misfit or else framed by using the resouces of his group and clents , the effected employee will have no other recource but to quit or else take the pink card for no reason whatsoever, this over a period of time brews or breeds a culture of yes sirs, and no sirs Managers and supresses smooth succession or replacement at the seniormost  level of the management pyramid of most effecient person.

HR dept in bigger organisation hardly have any say on the politics at the work place ,since they believe in what they are made to believe  and have no way of finding the ground reality at the work place

Politics is in every place, and most of the times 'knowledgable person' is at the receiving end than the 'unknowledgable' because he knows that his superiors always favour him because he favours them too! Mutually they are hand-in-glove making money - this is rampant not only in government sector but, visibly in private sectors too. Who doesn't want extra money apart salary & other perks?

I find it intriguing to understand that how come the superiors & the management tolerate the politics. If the heirarchy itself will control their instincts of politics maybe then the subordinates will never favor these malpractises. but then some people are born with the traits of divide & rule. It remains for the person who is targetted with politics to handle with utmost chivalry without succumbing to the pressure.

people's resistance to change

idea posted by manjari jha Soft Skills Trainer, IKC-IHTM

When organizational change is focussed on improvement and development, the employees' support is required at implementing change in the workplace. Whether it is understanding the instrument of change, professionalism and ethics; a simple resistance from the side of employees can become a big stumbling block.

It becomes difficult to maintain the broad diversity, different perspectives, opinions and questions.

In the present situation, one should have the capacity to accept the changes but even after giving number of trainings, there are employees who are not able to accept changes. Therefore, the leaders must have the capacity to tackle the employees diplomatically.  But for this, Management must have confidence in the leader.  If the Management is supportive, then nothing is impossible.

Motivation

idea posted by ajay moolankodan handling the goa office, air arabia

The biggest threat is lack of motivation nowadays which could be in the form of appreciation as well.

We are all running behind numbers but fail to recognise efforts put it by individuals and teams for the increase.

Need to necessarily be rewards in the form of money however even an appreciation coming in from the top management will help

I think self-ownership is much stronger as intigator for devotion to projects. Not to say that expectation for appreciation by management is quite often fail. Suppose the fund raise is successful, the form of social entprenure nowaday growing as proactive part force as a part of economy growth.  Just as a thought, please.

Lack of Quality

Most of the time, all are busy to complete their targets and want to get promotion and incentive.  So chances are frequent that one forgets the quality of work.

Lack of Communication

Decision Making process to be made as clear as possible.

Not necessarily everyones consensus. Lack of communication is as result of everyone's threat to be denied or pointed out for criticism and eventually less trust in opinion. Who can instigate more proactive and open-minded work environment??

continuous pressure to perform

idea posted by kshantaram GM-hrd/hr professor
organisations have too ambitious goals to double/trible the sales, diversify, add products, cut costs, export, etc etc while would not like to invest in adequate manpower or systems or correct reward policies - people are under continuous scrutiny to perform through goal setting systems and the so called performance incentives and expected to performm 24x7 days in modern parlance feeling proud to be such an organisation -leaving little or no time for work life balance and sufficient rest to be creative enough, and added to this is organisational politics, sychophancy, etc there are organisations which call a person to work even when laid with severe malaria and hospitalised, or organisations despatching a person on business tour saying will take care of the family. there are organisations which want the berlin wall to be built overnight at will.

The growing technology

idea posted by Nikhil Jain Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

I think the emergence of new technology will be a big threat for the modern workplace. The use of mobile phones, emails, chatting, etc... will be the threat which the companies are going to face in the future. The use of this, during the working time will decrease the productivity of the company. So the companies should be aware of this threats and take necessary measures to handle them in the future.

Marketplace requires rethink

idea posted by Daniel T. Bloom Sr Partner, Daniel Bloom & Associates, Inc.

The greatest threat to the modern workplace is to continue to look at employees as strictly an expense item. When we do this we  fail to take in to consideration the contribution that the employee may make to the bottom line of the corporation based on the knowledge assets they maintain. Another threat is the failure on the part of upper management to closely scrutinize their hiring practices. Over the past several months I have observed blatantly illegal questions on applications which have nothing to do with whether the candidate can perform the duties of the position. i.i. one corporation asked with a requried yes or no response are you a visible minoirty?

All the above maintioned points are my personal thinking, which i am seeing my my current company as well as in previous companies, So it is really important for companies that they will select Quality persons not by selary prospective but by Quality.
