How much money did your organization invest last year in training and development that failed to provide the results you sought? You are not alone if employee training classes rarely resulted in the transfer of immediately useful information to your workplace.

Real employee behavioral change, based on the training content, is even harder to demonstrate in most organizations. Discouraging? You bet.

So what's an organization to do to ensure employee training transfer to the workplace?

Make sure the need is a training and development opportunity

idea posted by Gargi Sinha Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

Do thorough needs and skills analysis to determine the real need for employee training and development. Make sure the opportunity you are pursuing or the problem you are solving is a training issue.

If the employee is failing in some aspect of her job, determine whether you have provided the employee with the time and tools needed to perform the job. Does the employee clearly understand what is expected from her on the job? Ask yourself whether the employee has the temperament and talent necessary for her current position; consider whether the job is a good skill, ability, and interest fit?

Employer follow up

idea posted by RAMESH KANDADAI Principal Consultant, ARM Consultants

Most employees treat training lightly because employers dont take post training follow up seriously. Consequently there is no accountability to practice what you have learned.

It is he job of HR to set the parameters during performance review every six months. During this review, every training that the employee has attended, its usefulness, its relevance to his work style and if he did/did not benefit from the training must be followed up. An employee who shows his training in practice must be rewarded.

Selection of Trainer!

idea posted by INDRANIL BHADURI Sales Training for Impatient Entrepreneur,Sales and Non Sales People, Freelance Trainer

Gargi Immensely thankful to you for referral .

Selection of Trainer is one of the vital ingredient in making training work at workplace.

Sometimes as a human we assume the fact Experience=Intelligence

In reality  EXPERIENCE IS NOT only the MEASURE OF effectiveness and  INTELLIGENCE!

In todays cutting edge business environment trainer should be judged BY RESULT and NOT just by Experience

PAY MORE,EXPECT MORE could be one of the effective strategy for making training work at workplace!

Thanks!

Training should be goal oriented

idea posted by Nikhil Jain Senior Consultant, Hewitt Associates

I agree with Gargi, & I would like to add another Idea here.....

Favor employee training and development that has measurable objectives and specified outcomes that will transfer back to the job. Design or obtain employee training that has clearly stated objectives with measurable outcomes. Ascertain that the content leads the employee to attaining the skill or information promised in the objectives.

With this information in hand, the employee knows exactly what he can expect from the training session and is less likely to be disappointed. He will also have ways to apply the training to the accomplishment of real workplace objectives.

I support this idea. The training should be goal oriented and done periodically.

Make the environment of workplace compatible to training

Training is very important & training at workplace is always very effective. However one thing should be noted that if the environment of work place is not compatible for training, then all efforts will be futile

Need to Compulsion, Motivation, Oppotunity & Success

idea posted by Manish Gaurav Chairman, B2B Logica Pvt. Ltd.

First of all a need is to be studied & whether there is any need or compulsion of training or not. Then comes’ the factor of motivating the employees by letting them know personal opportunities at work place which will lead to organizational & personal success.

Conditioning

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Skinner and Pavlovian conditioning based training is the most effective type of training. The former is by imitation and through games. A game is designed where a group is formed where the trainees and the supervisors participate. Nobody knows the decisions that are to be taken as the game progreses. One person is chosen to see how the game progreses who also will be playing. After certain outcomes are reached the game is analysed and see who all made their decisions right who all were flawed and how the outcomes could have been improved.

The latter involves conditioned stimulus and conditioned reflexes. The trainees are made conditioned into stimuluses the appearence of which their reflexes work towards certain desired actions. This require supervisors who can condition the trainees.

Conditioned reflexes are easily transferable. The game type is actualy an ongoing processes which company employees can play on regular basis which is updated and improved as time progresses.

It Starts With Planning, Implementation And ROI

idea posted by Business Management Consultant Business Management Consultant, Business Management Specialist & Strategic Planner

There is a lot that can be said and done about employee training. You just have to make sure that it is effective and you have the right training environment and materials. It all begins with planning. Without proper planning and implementation things will not go right.

Having well trained employees is very beneficial for business or project success. Having very good trainers and instruction arms employees with beneficial professional or technical skills. That also shows that you are invested in them and interested in bringing them with you into the company’s future. This helps keep workers motivated and involved.

Throughout the training process and after you have to make sure that employees understand the training that they’ve received and that they’re able to apply it. You have to have measurable results because without measurable results it might be impossible to view training as anything but an expense.

A company has to decide how they’re going to obtain an acceptable ROI (return on investment). Sometimes training workers can be a tremendous drain on your time and resources so a company, manager or trainer should be mindful of their ROI. A company or manager should determine what kind of growth or other measure is a reasonable result of the training that they provide.
