The current crisis in the world’s financial system has left the construction industry facing its toughest challenges for the present generation. The current global economic recession is neither the first nor the last to rear its head in our economy. An economic and financial crisis provides a golden opportunity for a country and its private sector to review policies and programmes aimed at improving productivity and competitiveness. In a fast and changing but integrating global economy, it is critical that companies constantly improve on their productivity and competitiveness to minimize the adverse effects of economic and financial crisis. What are the trends in construction industry for 2010?

Innovating to reduce cost and minimize error

idea posted by Venkatesh M Warehouse Manager, Larsen and Toubro

I believe, the most significant aspect associated with the construction industry trends is increased use of the latest IT technologies for pacing up the work. Cutting edge technology (like Building Information Model (BIM)) is being adopted by world's one of the biggest industries for leveraging purposes and is mainly being used in raising the efficiency level of engineering and designing of construction industry. Construction Industry trends show that the utilization of information technology has helped the industry to save a lot of fund which could be channelized in more fruitful directions.

We must innovate in the direction of cost cutting and minimal time ovrruns in construction technology by optimal use of Information Technology tools in cutting edge equipments . As use of RMC revolutionized our construction management ,there are many areas where such advanced measures are required to bring about sea changes in Civil industry.

Energy modelling of structures as per IGBC & TERI norms was a positive step in this innovation. Still a lot needs to be done ...fast.

I too agree with you, unless the cost is reduced and minimising errors nothing is possible specially when the industry is going through lean phase. Reducing the cost does not mean to compromise on the quality of the products but by minimising the errors and minimising the wastages we can cut down the costing, for this better planning and project management should be implemented.

Yes, I agree with Mr. Venkatesh. In my opinion, cost trends are going to change in the next six months as overall spending in the economy continues to rise and spending continues to slip lower in most construction markets. These will the key changes: Construction commodity prices will rise. Prices for manufactured construction products with more labor than commodity content will be steady to slightly lower. Contractors will have to trim their margins further for nonresidential building work but will begin restoring margins for residential work.

Construction projects are highly complex these days and therefore it is time to Rethink Construction. This is the time to rearrange all the system and most of the companies are engaged in it.

Absolutely right. But the awareness & inclination to adopt the green Tech is still naive. There should be areas where adoption of green tech be made mandatory & such initiatives be encouraged by regulatory channels.

Employment opportunities rising

Construction industry contributes a huge chunk to the world GDP amounting to 1/10th of the same. There is a promising opporunity in building more in the country by which it has immense potential in generating huge amount of employment. It has been found out that construction industry offers employment to around 7% of the total employed work force around the globe.

Well Shravan there is no doubt about the jobs created by construction but still we are not producing the quality of work. Still we have to have a sustainable development without compromising with quality, enviornment, social life and even giving a boost to the economics.

Slow down

With lower governance support than past financial year, the phase may come down in commercial building construction, as we already witness the demand available construction space as on date in this segment. However, in Residential segment the phase may move with same phase which is now.
