Bridging the generation gap at work is very important if an organization wants its employees to work together peacefully and productively. Research show that employees in an organization interact on the basis of their upbringing, values and ideas and thus, each of the generations has its own way of thinking, working and behaving, according to their backgrounds.

So, in what ways the gap can be closed??

Open-door policy

idea posted by Janaki Ram HR Executive, Lead Consultancy
An environment that encourages questions brings out the best in both generations. Informal interactions with seniors, where the thought behind strategic moves is discussed, ensures knowledge transfer.

Provide Proper Training

idea posted by Diya Mehra Executive search, ABC consulting

Training the employees on the communication and working styles of the different generations will help in avoiding misunderstandings as well as confrontations in the workplace. For this organizations should conduct regular seminars and special events especially dedicated to this purpose which offer practical advice to the employees on how to deal with people from the other generation. Once the employees begin to understand the other employees belonging to other generations, they will be able to work together in a better way.

an organisation can provide better infrastructure, training, growth but in order to fulfill the gap each and every person in the organization should have good attitude and what else we need is healthy communication , communication between higher management, managers, leads to freshers should be like that there is no barrier

By fostering Learning as a culture

The young want to change without thinking of consequences while the old are more resistant to change. A lot of bridging the gap depends on our ability as the older generation to enhance and adapt to change. Younger generation get bored of hearing the experiences of the older while dealing a specific problem, because they feel that the customer needs, opportunities, competition, social environment is not relevant anymore in the vibrant market today. Gen Next is very specific about the nature of their work. “In fact, a lot of career decisions are not based on salaries and role change but specifics,”. The perceptions and attitudinal differences shall have to be bridged with greater interaction between both the generations. When the Learning is a culture, these differences can easily be answered, since no one is master of all. Sharing views and opinions will always be good for the individual development and for the development of the organisation as well.

Knowledge updating and staying relevant to the current situations is an important aspect of bridging any generation gap in an organization. Being open to new ideas and better ways of doing things is always an issue and an ego conflict among an aging staff who refuse to accept change. Thought leadership comes with open debates focusing on solutions.

Having mutual trust & respect

idea posted by Sharad Tiwari G. M. Marketing, News Today
The main reason for a non conducive environment is mistrust & non respecting each other. The elders should respect & trust the youngster for their energy and new ideas & on the other hand the youngsters should respect their elders for their experience and vast knowledge on their fields of operation.

Interactive program - dept / company wide.

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

Interactive program aimed to enrich the behaviors of different generation might bring in good results. A young boss might be having a tough time to handle an old office Suptd. Its' but natural. To narrow these anomaly, more and more employees interactive program be introduced. So that, each one come to understand better and mutually be beneficial to each other in-terms of experience and results. These program can, also include, a specific employee training to bridge the gap. In armed forces, these kind of gap is being tried to be kept, minimum by giving a collective training for all ranks together.
