Rising fuel costs may be a good thing in one respect: new methods will be developed to reduce costs that will reduce the energy hunger of the nation in the future, whether there is a fuel crunch or not?

So, in your opinion, what can be done other than rising fuel prices for an energy-hungry nation like India?, Please share your ideas...

Discover a substitute fuel

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

With the rising fuel demand , best strategy would be to reduce petrol consummption or discovering any new substitiute fuel insted of petrol. To my knowledge, ethanol can be the fuel of the future, and is continuing funding research on newer and cheaper bio-sources. As from the cellulosic biomass to ethanol technology, a second-generation process to extract ethanol from corn cob and sugarcane bagasse, both waste products in food production, will be a great idea. It would be like taking the producers from the second-generation to the third in biofuels.

We are the developing country so the demand of petroleum product will be in higer side today and in coming years. The Govt. and oil company should work on the infrastructure to devlope on alternative fuels like biofuels and encrouge on usage of these alternative fuel and should come out with some idea to control on usage of petrol

I agree with all the ideas. I think that a number of concepts already developed regarding alternative fuel but actually not implemented in industrial production with sincerity. The cost will reduce in mass production so that public will prefer to use. The idea of running vehicles in water should given stress as it is most environment friendly.

Civic Sense to stop misuse

idea posted by Nilesh Jain Project Manager, A Leading Media/Telecom Co.

Availability of new sources will only pamper our needs.  Apart from identifying new banks & controlling prices a lot of civic sense is required in using it.  Reduced demand will help to minimize the prices.

Wastage of energy/fuel is usually observed at few of the following places:

1) Not up-to the mark public transport (can have dedicated lanes for buses), Keeping engine on in traffic, Royal attitude - One person one car

2) Massively illuminated advertisement hoardings, Daylight powered-on street lights,

3) Make compulsion to construct houses/flats/commercial buildings with maximum light saving and reducing use of air conditioning - levy huge penalty for non-compliance

4) Importantly, award efficient/conservative energy users

I second your idea of developing Civic Sense for the optimum utilization in judicious manner reducing demand and demand supply curve will automatically correct the prices as well as we will have ample to meet our rising demands. US is best example, they are not touching their reserves.

Usage of fuels

idea posted by krupal pandya Asst. Manager/Manager (Technical), Reliance Industries
See what i feel is that government should first of all reduce their facilities given to MP`s and should provide more funding to the research and development carried out to find out an alternative sources for fuel.Just talking about this is not enough as its high time now and some steps have to be taken.

we should control at the user end.We should control the manufacturing of small

vehicle and try to adopt china pattern on transport.goods should be tranported

more by rail rather than small small trucks.

public transports are a great way to save fuel. people should become self aware to save fuel and use the public transport service provided by govt.

Prevent the rupee/dollar fall

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

To my knowledge, there has always seen an inverse relation between the effect of inverse relation between the rupee value and the crude cost. That is, with the present market condition, one per cent fall in rupee value in terms of dollars could increase the cost the local fuel prices by 80 paise per litre. The RBI and the Government could prevent the fall in the rupee value at this critical time, and at least for the time being, which undoubtedly, can be an alternate to prise rise.

Regulate the usage of fuel

idea posted by Pedro Gonzalez Lopez Advance Quality Engineer, Alps Electric

Goverment can implement some startegics to regulate the use of fuel, like extra taxes for the owners of cars with high fuel consumption, and incentives to the citizens who buy low fuel consumption cars.

Set limits on the usage of fuel.

idea posted by VINAY GUPTA Claims Executive , SHRIRAM GENERAL INSURANCE CO.LTD

Limit should be set on the usage of fuel for every consumer i.e. Each consumer should be issued a unique identification card for the usage of fuel. On every filling this card will be updated for the next filling and will also restrict the consumer for refilling if he has already consumed the required amount of fuel in his fuel budget. If certainly, he requires extra amount of fuel over his budget then he can issue it by paying extra.

using public transport facility rather than the personal then we can save the fuel and save the environment ffrom exhausts

Design modification

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

No body intends to reduce use of fuel it is known fact. Once it is used to, then it is to be followed.

Alternative to fuel such as Solar, Wind, Fuel cell are lucreative options but expensive for individuals.

So other option can be try to modify the designs as much as possible to reduce consumption of fuel.

Use Electric

idea posted by Arun Murali Senior Software Engineer, Mind Tree Limited
The easiest solution readily available. Electric Vehicles. It works for a multitude of transportation solutions. Best part it has nothing to do with Fuel or Fuel prices. We use either coal or nuclear or hydro electric or wind power or solar power to produce electricity. Fuel prices will not affect our transportation costs.

What I think

idea posted by Krishanu Chatterjee Spare parts & logistics, Ural India Ltd
I think it is not the proper time to deregulate fuel price. It will cause negative growth to the auto Sector as well as have massive impact on price index. Already it is too late but still we must think about alternate fuel and switchover to other sources like battery/solar power vehicles.Indian army should get rid off their old petrol vehicles (mostly 30-40 years old) and go for newer vehicles with less fuel consumption and less pollution.

People will be encouraged to take public transport and thus save fuel.Govt must improve publictrnsport system thus saving fuel and environment.
