Marketers need to realize that it is necessary to invest in technology which will allow them to increase customer retention, as it is cheaper for operators to retain a client than to obtain a new one.

Customer loyalty is a purchase behavior, unlike customer satisfaction which is an attitude. Loyal customers have a specific bias about what to buy and from whom - their decision to buy is not random.

So, What can be the role of the technology in customer retention and building loyalty?

Helpful to regular buyers and refering others

idea posted by Renu Iyer Trading Manager, BPL

Firstly, understanding that loyal customers will exhibit behavior like buying regularly and also helps in refering others. The Internet, with its widespread capability, is a powerful tool that can work wonders in building these behaviors in customer retention and building loyalty.

It can be a two-way targeted communication channel

The high cost of personalized customer communication has also been an obstacle to effective real-time marketing. In my experience, telemarketing has traditionally been the outbound marketing channel of choice for the mobile network operators, but the high cost of each individual call makes it impossible to achieve the economies of scale required to make an impact across the entire pre-paid customer base.

But developments in automated marketing technology mean that targeted two-way SMS campaigns offer a very viable - and cost-effective - real-time communication channel.
