Dear friends, most of the time we can see that most of the students who come out of civil engineering colleges are not well prepared to cope up with the current and highly competitive market.

I want to know from you people what changes we should see in civil engineering education system so that better engineers and architects can come out of those colleges to compete with the construction market?

More practical exposure

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

I think, in most of the times we learn things “on job” but I feel,  we can be one step ahead other than having their regular curriculum students should spend most of their time with professional architects and do more and more practicals so that by the time they are passed out, they are well prepared and always updated with the market demand and in their future life also they don’t just rely on text books but use their already having experience so that better

I feel colleges lack faculty and then how can a student interact with indusry when the basic needs arent present..... they dont know where to go, which industry to go, whom to speak , how to approach..... Until and unless thers good faculty in engineering colleges thers no question of INDUSTRY_INSTITUTE INTERACTION.

Yes..for sure..More practical exposure and if possible ..International.

If you notice the Architecture education in India, we have 6 months of training at any regular office as part of our 5 yr curriculum. Either done after 3rd yr or after 4th yr- it really changes the views we used to 've about the profession.

More over you also need teachers with practical exposure and not only bookish knowledge about the theories. To develop a Civil Engg Professional, he should be taught by another Professional & not just 'Teachers'. Atleast guest lectures on a regular basis from people practising in the industry.

yes pragya, ur opinion is exactly true y because i also faced the same situation when i went into the field immedieatly after my graduation.

so according to me the education system should be changed a little in such a way that, lot of elective subjects should be present and an workshop should be conducted to the students in their second year itself , describing them the various oppurtunities present in our civil engineering like quality control. planning, execution, designer, highway specialist, geotechnical engineer, environmental.... and so many more ,and now based on this workshop the student gets a little knowledge on wht he is going to do when he comes out. so based on his intrest he takes that specific elective subject and prepares well.

other thing is that all the institutions should provide the access for different journals available in the global market like ICJ.ASCE, etc., so that students can enlighten themselves .

Professional Role Clarity....!!!

idea posted by M NITIN SHENOY, PMP, IPMA-D, CEng MICE Manager

There is a lack of Professional Role Clarity among Civil Engineering Students...

i.e. students aiming for an IT job are aware of the possible roles in the field like :

JAVA Developer, SQL , .NET Framework, Team Leader, Fucntional Consultant etc..this aids them in tuning themselves in a particular area of interest as well makes them search for resources to enrich further knowledge in that particular field..

Were as no graduating CIVIl engineer have a clear view of the Civil Engineering Roles..

I.e Design (Structural / Architectural / Services / MEP / Interiors), or in Construction (Project Manager, PLanning, Quantity Survey, Site Survey, Site Engineer, MEP Engineer, Time Office, Admin, Accounts, Store Management, Procurement Incharge, Site Coordination etc.)

Even in degisn it could further lead to Hydro, Environmental, Foundation, Soil Mechanics, Heavy Engineering etc..

When students are graduating without industry interaction or without defining course structure with TAGs indicating which professional domain of Civil Engineering this particular course falls in, students may be not getting the right direction or purpose of studying...

There should indeed be a credit course on the avenues & career paths for civil engineers.

They should be trained on the various forms of construction : Process(liquid-gas, liquid-solid, solid, power plants etc.) as well as non-process(Manufacturing plants, Civil Works,Support Facilities,Architecture & engineering firms etc).

I don't think specialization should be done at the B.Tech level.

I agree with Nitin, that fresh Civil Engineers have no clear view of the civil engineering role. As Pragya said students should be encouraged towards specialization which they are interested during student life.

I think industrial training for a period of 6 MONTHS to ONE YR should be given to engineering students as part of their course. This will of great use to students.

Civil Engineering course in every semester should have dedicated module, exercise and case studies to develop application of common sense to solve day to day civil engineering problems faced at site.

Better Education System

idea posted by Khalil Qureshi Civil Engineer-Other, IGBC AP, Free Lancer

I partly agree with Pragya and partly with Nitin.Practical exposure is a must for all budding engineers. What is happening today is that engineers spend around 4 yrs in college doing their BE after that they require atleast 3-5 yrs exposure on field so that they can be termed as responsible engineers. As Nitin mentions their should be specialisation fields that is true, but we already have some fields but not as exhaustive as mentioned by Nitin, something can be done on that front too. As of today we have BE which is very basic any person interested in a particular field needs to do their Masters in their respective field but then that person should be competent enough to gain and achieve his masters, also it doesnt solve the problem of having practical knowledge.

I would suggest we should have a more dynamic education system which should incorporate lots of case studies apart from what we are already teaching. It should be able to take them through a series of steps to achieve the desired results. Like, To tackle a particular case/event they tell them what are the possible ways, what are the economic considerations involved with each way, which of them is sure shot the most practical way, what tools/skills you require to achieve it etc.... By creating such an education sytem combined with Pragya's and Nitin's idea we should be able to get good Civil Engineers.

To start with in each year of College of Engineering at least Three Months he should get exposed to different branches of Civil Engineering. With the first hand information he receives, he can choose a Role he wants to play. The Curriculum should support Industry exposure from the begining of the course. This can be tried as a pilot project in some colleges.

Actually in classes they are taught theoretically,as soon as the candidate joins the job he experience that what taught is not being used except designing any section,

I have come to conclusion by experience that while teaching in class one professor should take a class in final year who has retired from any civil engineer job.

Can be made compulssory by govt for teacher, student who are send for practical training  manage to get certificate from the firm/organiser/govt deptt .that they got the 3-4 monthes traning, thus the purpose is failed.

Unfortunately, the people  with lot of Practical experience in the Field are not willing to the Teaching. and The Teachers are afraid of going to field to implement what they have been preaching all these days. This is the most funny thing i realised.

Providing More Live Projects

idea posted by Chandramouli Sr. Manager - QS & Contracts

Hi freinds, I feel that, in most of the colleges have only one project work in the final semister. Instead of that, in each semister have a live project work in different areas like 'roads', 'buiildings', 'bridges', 'land development', 'industrial construction', 'contracting' etc., will give the edge to the student when he comes out from colleges.

It should made compulsary that every student should participate in debates, seminars and exhibitions etc., in related to Civil Engg. activities.
