These days, many kids draw little distinction between real life and online life. They may use social Web sites designed for children such as Webkinz or Club Penguin, or social Web sites designed for adults such as Windows Live Spaces, YouTube, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, and others. Basically they should understand that many of these Web pages are be viewed by everyone with access to the Internet.

So what child safety measures should be in place in Social networking sites?

Privacy settings should be different for kids

idea posted by Neelam Mishra Software Developer, BEA Systems

Social networking sites should have strong privacy settings which shows the children how to use these settings to limit who can view their online profile, and explain to them why this is important. And the parents should also look whether all the settings are proper before their kids start using it.

Here are tips for helping your kids use social networking sites safely: * Help your kids understand what information should be private. * Explain that kids should post only information that you – and they – are comfortable with others seeing. * Use privacy settings to restrict who can access and post on your child's website. * Remind your kids that once they post information online, they can't take it back. * Talk to your kids about avoiding sex talk online. * Tell your kids to trust their gut if they have suspicions. If they ever feel uncomfortable or threatened by anything online, encourage them to tell you.
