Most of the states in our country are living in the dark day by day. The present power sector crisis are being undefetable on these days. North india is undergoing a major power crisis. Goverenment is imposing power cuts for 6-8 hrs.People are dying for a drop of water.Situation is worst in Delhi. In TV news we regularly see the scenes of fighting of people for water.Major thermal plants of north india are running out of coal and water.Goverenment is apealling people to shut their shops before 8 p.m. As such problems are arising what could be the possible solutions for the same. What measures you will suggest?

Power saved is Power generated.

idea posted by Sumit Jayaswal Associate/Sr. Associate -(Technical), Cognizant Technologies Solutions

The solution cannot be something like getting a generator to geenrate power. Power is a limited resource which one should save by all means. Power saved is power generated.

Mr. Ravishankar, I appreciate your comment. In order to reduce the power crisis, we need to increase power production as much as possible or else we have to depend on the stored power.

in a huge populous country like india definitely energy saved is energy generated.in our country the distribution efficiency is only around 30%. its to be increased and if it is done our power crises wil get reduced

Even with the prepaid billing and metering, people can still over use and waste power. I can take an example of prepaid mobile. the people have not started talking less just because it is prepaid. They just buy a lot of cards and keep with them... they use it extensively even though they will not have anything to talk.. similarly, the idea may not work.

Reduce all losses, necessity of energy saving by all users

idea posted by Ganagaraj Ramachandran Head/VP/GM-Production/Manufacturing Covanta Madurai Operating Pvt Ltd

One of the quick and achievable solution for today's power shortage is

enforce that all utilities adhere to the norms of transmission and distribution losses.

Account for each and every unit generated

educate domestic, agri and commercial users on the advantage of energy efficiency.

I am not saying these steps are not taken, but effective implementation is need of this hour.

Accounting of unit generated to cash realised is not to be seen in state run utilities. whatever system implemented and money spent on that is not yielding any result.

Steps are initiated by Govt for energy saving for industrial consumers are now become mandatory, on other consumers it can be made effective in the source itself, i.e only energy efficient products are manufactured and available in the market, mainly in lighting.

Demand side reduction is always the most effective and cheapest olution to a supply side problem.

Ah! I opened this page to write the same because if anything can show "Immediate" results then that can be saving only.

Implementing Pre-Paid Metering & Billing System

idea posted by N. NAGESHWARAN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, M/s. KEC INTERNATIONAL LTD. (an RPG group)

Central & State Govt. should shake hand and immediately implement Pre-Paid Billing System by instantly changing the faulty meters if required. This way consumption could be controlled.

Hi Nageshwaran Nagarajan, what an idea. Really its an effective one to implement for the Indian society.

Solar Refrigeration and air-conditioning

idea posted by Michael Reid CTO/CIO, Milestone NPD Limited

These two cooling applications are one of the largest domestic consumers of electricity.

To avoid brown-out power cuts on particularly hot days; remove the demand for electricity at these peak times by usind the natural demand matching of solar cooling.

I admit to a vested interest as we are developing a low-cost solar cooling technology at Solar Polar.

Can you please cover this in more detail in a separate insight.

Large scale privatization and thorough policy restructuring

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

The power sector is adversely affected by the financial crisis at this period of recession. The Indian industry desperately needs better power infrastructure than currently available in the country, for its survial. The government needs to take decisive measures to prop up the sorely lagging power generation capabilities in India. Large scale privatization and thorough policy restructuring are the need of the day, for the power industry to gear up and meet present and future needs. This crisis should be dealt properly with the required amendments in regulations.....

Due to the recession many of the entrepreneurs have not shown interest in investing in power sector or otherwise many private generating companies could have been set up power plants to tackle the situation. The interest rates have gone up from 10% to 13%, which was unexpected. The open access system is encouraging, but in few states like TN, UP etc, the political conditions in these states are not supporting. The mega power projects initiated by Governments are falling out of their schedules, private investments should be brought in and its the only way to solve the problem.

Small Capacity Power Plants by community / group of users ...

idea posted by anup bagla M.Phil student @ AHRD and Consultant / Specialist - Process & Environment, Energy Conservation & Sustainability, Stanley Consultants I P Ltd. (On Assignment basis)

Along with more effective / vigorous implementation of Energy Saving Measures / distribution losses etc. as mentioned by Gangaraj ... I strongly feel that comparatively small capacity Hydro or NC Energy (Solar, Wind) and other Power Plants need to be set up with Government Subsidy on PPP (Public Private Partnership) mode (model) by a community / group of commercial / industrial, agri and even by domestic users to ease the situation ... !

This is a good solution as long as the correct infrastructure is in place.

Once that has happened a decentralised system is the ideal method for a stable system with minimised losses.

This is one good step, now what is called as "distributed generation" which in one way sure help to reduce power crisis. Technical advantage is distribution loss now incurring can be reduced to the minimum.

'Immediate Solution' is only load shedding

idea posted by Sharath Kotian Development Officer, Life Insurance Corporation Of India

In my opinion the immediate solution for the power crisis is only load shedding which we are facing presently in Maharashtra.

The long term solution is power generation through alternative means.  What comes to my mind here immediately is Wind Power.  Many countries are resorting to it now.  Its time that we turn to this alternative form of power generation.

The next alternative form is solar energy.  This is also a cost effective media of power generation. Our government is promoting this already by giving subsidized loans for purchase of equipments.
