this is one of the initiatives done by P&G with the retail giant Walmart.P&G and Wal-
Mart found a way to leverage on information technology by sharing data across their mutual supply chains. The resulting channel has become more efficient because channel activities are better coordinated. There are reduced needs for inventories with increased sales by focusing on selling what the customers want. All in all, the supply chain between P&G and Wal-Mart has adopted a much better customer focus through the channel partnership. And it is mutually beneficial |

Yes with out optimising inventory nothing works and information technology is to be used in every phase of stock movement.
Channel partnership
There are constraints to channel partnership in India
1. POS information not quickly shared with Distributor
2. Bull whip effect due to no proper demand forecasting and inventory management techniques
3. Lack of information and sharing and feeding information on to ERP due to lack of training and IT infrastructure being weak
4. Uncertainty in goods transit by: Sea, Road, Rail due to govt style of working and private operator
5. First step should be supply chain improvement by innovative techniques that reduce lead time, inventory handling. IT integration should be at a later stage due to training issues, Investment in smart delivery system is less

talking about the rural areas of India which contributes in a large revenue for FMCG market, the roads are so poor that trucks take time to reach the desired destination, if this condition can be improved (major contribution by government),lead time will be less.
