Last year, the government dismantled the administered price mechanism for petroleum products. It deregulated the price of petrol, but stopped short of doing the same in the case of diesel and cooking gas, saying higher prices of these fuels could hit the poorer sections of the society. The government continues to pay huge amounts as subsidies to fuel retailers to sell petroleum products below cost. So, what does subsidising fuels means for Indian economy??

Effects consumption patterns

idea posted by Leena Khade Banc Assurance, Deutsche Bank

Whenever the government offers subsidies it alters the final consumer prices, affecting the consumption patterns in the economy. For example, people buy diesel vehicles because they can obtain the fuel at a lower price.  While prices of most goods and services in India are market determined, administered pricing exists in certain sensitive sectors. The government offers subsidies on some goods and services, changing the price at which they are sold. It works in the opposite direction of a tax, by decreasing the final price rather than increasing it. For example, diesel is sold at a lower price than petrol, as it is used by the railways and trucks. An increase in transportation costs would directly lead to an increase in the prices of most food items, which would, in turn, hurt the vulnerable sections of the population.

Yes You are right Ms.Leena, moreover the subsidy is not good for our economy in the long run and it is good in the short-term only.

Subsidy is a good thing - whenever they controller thinks of adjustment akin to international cost hike, this fuels agitation and rifts in the country. The scenario develops cracks in the political parties leading to cascading inflationary trend in other commodities - the most affected in all these changes are the common men who had to bear the brunt of inexplicable high cost!

Subsidized fuel means overburdened economy

Subsidizing fuels or any item consumed by the society is to lighten the burden on the consumers to enable them to use the product as required and spend on other essential items. But this process makes the economy overburdened because government has to pay for the actual and cut its budget on something essential for the community. It drags the economy.

In a country where a very significant percentage of the population have very little or no purchase power, subsidy is necessary. But subsidy alone is damaging to the economy. While the subsidy is on, efforts on a war footing must be enabled to improve the purchase power of this weaker section. When every oneis empowered with more or less the same purchase power - within a broad spectrum - the economy will become self sustaining and subsidies can be eliminated.

The wonderful minister has raised the most vital question and nobody puts any idea how to solve the imbroglio! The professionals and business community are buying astronomically costly SUVS(for no apparent necessities other than show-off and vanity) in hordes, claiming depreciation on their balance sheets on one side and running those vehicles with subsidized fuels on the other side.Who are making such laws and rules? And tolerating such practices? Are such subsidies justified? Why the learned Govt.-appointed pandits are keeping their eyes closed ?

Artificial growth

Because there will not be all round growth as subsidies would harm that particular sector. When the price is left for open market fluctuation the economy wouldnt be able to absorb its impact. And subsidies would only end up harming the sector as artificial propping up creates a false sense of uncertainty.

Subsidy is nothing but the difference what final consumer pay and the selling prices for omcs.In why view subsidy is nothing but to boost political views because these subsidy is recovered through only 2 ways i.e highet tax or printing notes and borrowings which indirectly affect the aam aadmi or make it more poorer. So it is because economical view is not given that important as compared to political. Some facts break up of vehicals used in india-- 15% passanger vehical 5% commercial 4% 3-wheelers 76% 2- wheelers So much of the talk in economy is about diesal price subsidy but petrol price are decontroled which if you will see from above that 76% aam aadmi use 2-wheelers, so the govt is trying to whom.
