Energy is used to heat, cool, ventilate, and light buildings. 10-20 per cent of energy consumed in this sector is used to manufacture materials and to construct and demolish buildings and a large amount of energy is consumed by the appliances used in buildings.

Greenhouse gas emissions from buildings worldwide are set to increase sharply over the next two decades, mainly due to construction booms in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Building-related GHG emissions could almost double by 2030 to reach 15.6 billion tonnes under the high-growth scenario, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

So, what sort of initiatives we need to take in future in construction industry to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

Efficient Resources

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Resource Efficiency  can be accomplished by utilizing materials that meet the following criteria:

* Recycled Content: Products with identifiable recycled content, including postindustrial content with a preference for postconsumer content.

* Natural, plentiful or renewable: Materials harvested from sustainably managed sources and preferably have an independent certification (e.g., certified wood) and are certified by an independent third party.

* Resource efficient manufacturing process: Products manufactured with resource-efficient processes including reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste (recycled, recyclable and or source reduced product packaging), and reducing greenhouse gases.

* Locally available: Building materials, components, and systems found locally or regionally saving energy and resources in transportation to the project site.

* Salvaged, refurbished, or remanufactured: Includes saving a material from disposal and renovating, repairing, restoring, or generally improving the appearance, performance, quality, functionality, or value of a product.

* Reusable or recyclable: Select materials that can be easily dismantled and reused or recycled at the end of their useful life.

* Recycled or recyclable product packaging: Products enclosed in recycled content or recyclable packaging.

* Durable: Materials that are longer lasting or are comparable to conventional products with long life expectancies.

Thus, this is the primary step which we all can take to reduce the impact on the environment

good topic, just to add to this we need to rise and save nature and energy.

biofuels for trucks, machines etc..

conserving electricity.

reducing impacts of construction materials.

recycling of materials.

go green

go for cavity wall construction ,heavy plantations in and around the building, use solar energy, local materials and use natural draft system for cooling always use the star rated electrical equipments. hope a bit of one saving can leed to maximum

Renewable resources

idea posted by Rajesh Yerra Sales Executive/Officer, GRT Hotels & Resorts
There are plenty of natural resources which provide sustainable energy like Wind, water, solar etc.,. Apart from these new materials should be manufactured which sustain the energy and consume little amount(ex:- double glazed glass which reflects the heat thus saving the power by 30% on AC)

Carbon foot print

idea posted by SHIVENDRA KUMAR JHA Project Manager
Every organisation should be asked to declare carbon foot print, i.e. contribution to carbon emission. It should be linked with company's annual report. There should be a bench marking of the same by Govt of India for industry (segment-wise). Any ,Excess emission , should result in penalisation.

We need to ask a very sincere question to ourself before we start pondering about GHG emissions. What is the percentage of  construction activity we are talking about compared to the global scenario. What are our neighbouring countries whose level of activity is 10 fold to us doing about it? It would be stupid to proceed with any of the measures without having a clear understanding about the above facts.

Ours is developing country where there would be fair bit of construction activity in near future atleast for another couple of decades. Embracing green technologies should not come in way of progress.

Focus should be on providing basic amenities to the most unpriveledged in the country. How many of them have the basic neccesities in there day to day life ?

Priotise basic shelter, drinking water supply , sanitation & power to every Indian first . After these things are sorted and there is still any energy left we can discuss measures to reduce GGE
