Demography is much beyond the marketers’ definition of male/female, sex, age, town and class. It is a study of population dynamics and belongs to a larger field of population studies, which examines the relationship between economic, social, cultural and biological processes influencing the population.

Let’s take two aspects about India’s changing demographics: skewed gender ratios and decrease in birth/ fertility rates. Among the most imbalanced in the world, the ratio among children up to six is now down to 927 girls per 1,000 boys. This is leading to, in some regions and communities, reverse dowries, and exchanges between brother-sister combinations. So, what is the impact of changing demography in India that we are seeing??

leads to convergence from polarisation

idea posted by Srinivas suravajhala Asst. Manager.
The discussion is on the impact of demographic change in India. It definitely leads to convergence from polarisation. The question here is it really happening in India? My belief is that people are becoming more divergent on caste, religion and regional terms, when the other world is unifying.

Changing demography changes everything

With skewed ration in population...consider the increase in inter-caste, inter-religion, inter-state and inter-language marriages this will lead to. Consider also the changes in the usage of mother tongues, mixed food habits, festive celebrations and other such life styles. Now, this could lead to a different gene pool.

Every such change, for marketers, means re-looking at product and service portfolios. Patterns in finance, health, real estate, education and foods will surely change. Not to mention ripple effects on mental health, retirement planning and say, health insurance. So, everything changes with changing demography out there...

Mindset

The immediate impact that I can think of will take place in the MINDSET....however the BEHAVIOUR pattern may take a bit of time to sediment. Concoction of varied culture, beliefs, faith, habits, ideas, expressions, impressions, et al would give birth to a different set or should I say segment of CUSTOMERS whose buying behaviour would be more dogmatic than what Text Book can elaborate. Also, Demographical changes amalgamated with Geographical mobility is another SEGMENT that can become a marketing proposition.

However, if closely dissected, companies/institutions can have the premonition carefully planned with products/services catering to the changing pattern in behaviour. Identifying needs beforehand would be the key to generate offerings that are value based and not evanescent. It would require companies to get as close as possible to the customers and invest in MR before launching/relaunching/improving the products/services.
