Often I see organizations where project teams are not measuring success consistently.  For example, one project team might believe a project is successful if they stayed within the budget; however, the customer was unhappy with the project because their expectations weren’t met.  Another project team might feel the project was successful because they kept everyone in the loop and met all milestones; however, the project had quality issues.

So, please share like, what you have tracked as a measure of success on your orgaizations  projects?

Customer Satisfaction is must! Today Customer is has their own taste they need good quality product, its upto organization how they have to do it. Cos Organization has to do it within budget and time period. For this each step has its own role, how they Manage the project with eveything in it.

Completion of tasks within budget

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

On lean projects we track the reliability of the planning system as measured by how often tasks complete as promised. Increasing reliability of completions counteracts the compound effects of dependence with variation. Consequently, the completion time of the whole project becomes more certain.  By measuring the completion of tasks against as promised, one is likely to increase individual’s estimating the time to completion more accurately, there by ensuring the whole project becomes more certain of successful completion against an overall timeline.

I agree with you. How ever project must be completed with in given time frame along with the given budget. Most of the Govt executing agencies handling various projects need to be enlightened about this aspect.

The project success may be measured on three parameters : 1. Completion within budget. 2. Completion within time frame. 3. Degree of success achieved in pre-set quality parameters. Bue customer will be satisfied ONLY when above three parameters are achieved. Hence, Customer Satisfaction is the single factor representing project success.

Define success and measure

I agree upon all the above ideas, but most projects and organisation defines a goal to be measured. SMART is one such methodology S - specific M - measurable A - attainable R - Realistic T - timely to set goals.

post-project glitches free

Completing projects under the defined parameters, viz., cost, time, quality, etc. augur well. The completed project conforming to all the above parameters should stay on ground without glitches and tinkering every now and then. Project's success should be counted only on real time and time-tested basis, say, give it a time for one year from the date of roll-out! We are very familiar to Corporatation's projects undertaken to facilitate general public, viz., roads, bridges, canals, etc. leaving us strained after completion eternally!

Employee Satisfaction..

Stressing our entire focus on customer what we here don't realize here is that it is basically the interest and attitude of the employee that will pay at the end. No doubt it is the client who will pay for the good job done but if the same efficiency is not maintained over time it is the company's reputation that pays for it.. what has not been taken into consideration here is the high level of attrition observed in many companies in recent times.. No doubt it is making projects pay..
