I personal feel that the news/programs which are related to national security should be censored. Take in case of 26/11 mumbai attack, that one should be censored. Also the recent combat training of Indian Army, Navy and Airforce was also shown... This news may help them who are threat to our national security... |

These days, we find both print media and television channels misusing their privileges. It is very clear that they are using their powers to meet their short-sighted objectives of getting more eyeballs which can in turn gain them more advertisement revenue. They project events in ways that help them gain more readership or viewers. They present only certain aspects of events and hide actual background of the occurrences so that the events look like the people involved in the events unfairly targeted women or certain religious communities. The recent spate of features carried by both print media and TV channels on either the attack on women in a pub in Mangalore or attack on churches in Karnataka are good examples of the dirty practices by media. Neither the newspapers nor the TV channels went into details of what the women were doing in the pub before they were attacked. Nor did they check with the parents of the targeted women to find out what their views on the incidents were. Nor did the media check with the women why they did not file any complaints on the attackers. None of the women were questioned on what they were doing at the pub to attract such a behaviour by the Ram Sena activists. Similarly in the case of attacks on churches, did the media go into details on the actual methods in which the conversions are being carried out? None of them dared to do so. If a media ombudsman had actually existed and if the ombudsman had asked the media to first explore the other sides of the coins that the media had so arrogantly been projecting, I daresay that none of the events would have even been aired or presented in any media. So much to all these media houses who blare about being fair. I am sure that they deliberately projected only one side of the occurrences. I certainly feel that they have not been fair to any degree. Sick media people!!! It is high time these dirty media houses are regulated before they break the nation. These media reports remind me of the times when traitors of the nation misused their privileges and helped the British by either selling information on freedom fighters or projecting them to be traitors. |

Ladies in the pub should not be a problem since they are free to do so in today's scenario. But doing wrong things is punishable but not in the way it was done in Mangalore pub.
Much of the news coming in the news channel are too partial and just views of somebody. These news should be impartial and should be thought-provoking.
Well said Mr.Prasanna, it was good to hear your comments on Media. As you said media should have found out what those womens were doing in the pub etc... and they might have but maybe the news wouldnt have been excited if all details were revealed...

May be I m an odd man out. But we do not seem to understand the television as medium. It is very intomate medium. Something that u can access to sitting in your drawing room or in your bedroom...there shud be very selective censorship...like something to do with national security....I beleive that the idea of censoring all adult fare is rediculous....in the age of internet where kids get an acccess to porn without any effort, governments idea of sanitizing television content is rediculous...ok....like it was before that adult fare shall not be shown before say eleven at night is ok....but to make television a controlled medium is rediculous....the very purpose of tv is defeated.... |

Different take here. Media in every which way will try to 'SENSATIONALIS' its content for want of more eyeballs. Its a business that they are in and they are providing us the basic necessity of 'VIEWING' NEWS right where we are in our living rooms!! Now, that in itself is a very selfless thought.
Looking into the fact that all of the above comes at a cost (cable operators are charging about Rs.600 or so) for a News channel to be beamed on our telly in our living room. It is therefore the channels preorgative to 'present' a news to us in the way they have been able to best interpret. Censorship of content that is definitely offensive, abusive, violent or even has any kind of sexual overtones is done at the OB van edit table itself.
coming to the pub attack. Most channels blatantly telecast the way these ladies were brutally dealt with. Physical abuse, slaps, hair pulling etc and verbal abuse were dealt to them. Now, if this content was to be censored, what would our reaction be at not being able to assess what we are being shown because it is blurred!! We are an intelligent, educated mass. We have our own ability to discard what is to be discarded and regard what is to be regarded!

Thankfully, indian journalists are good enough to judge them self what has to be shown and what not. How ever what is more disturbing is the government interferance in every matter is making us to rethink wether this nation is democratic in true words!! |

Well I don't believe that people could predict future, and now a days there are television programs which makes us believe in what they have predicted for the future or believe to happen in the near future. |

Censorship ends up being misused by governments. Self-censorship is the best. Long live the remote! |
