For a person to stand on a platform addressing a strong crowd of professionals for the first time is not a very easy task. Even the best orators have to mock themselves or prime themselves to a degree of excitement and confidence to be able to make an opening statement. KNOWLEDGE: This is one place a person has to be thorough. He has to undersatnd the reason for his being a speaker, the topic on which he is suposed to lecture and the intelligence level of the audience that he is addressing. Awareness of these three things would give the orator an insight to the reason for lecture; What needs to be addressed? An insight into the audience demographic would give him an insight to the reason; How do I make the lecture plausible and believable? An thorough background study of the topic in question and mixed ith personal skills would give the orator an insight to the reason; I am the best in this field and I have to live upto it!! ORATORY: Fluency in speaking would come naturally when the relation is mentally established for the Orator between the topic and himself. After drinking in the above knowledge, he is ready to open his mouth. HUMOR: Making use of interesting anecdotes, life like comic situations, posing humor filled questions to the audience would all add to the orator being applauded and remembered. The most important reaction here is that a laugh can break the ice to further audience participation in the debate or lecture. Any audience response by way of laughs, questions during the lecture makes the entire session memorable for the speaker. These are the three main ingredients that would make anyone a good SPEAKER!! :)) |

I throughly agree with Makrand's idea. These are three important factors which makes a person a good speaker. And as Piyush said if you are not been used to mixing humor in your speech before don't attempt in public speech. Unless and until your are used it don't try it. But practice it because you can attract many audience only with humors speech.
I absolutely agree with you on knowledge and oratory skills, but I have some inhibitions on the use of humor. As you rightly said that humors helps in "breaking the ice" or "audience inclusion" if I may use a different term.
But, what I want to point out is that Humor is just one method of audience inclusion out of so many others. While, there is no denial that humor is the most effective method but at the same time it is the most risky method also. Many-a-times I have seen people attempting to use humor and then terribly failing in doing so.
So, I want to advise that try humor in a public speech only if you are a person who has an experience of using humor in your general conversations.
To draw an analogy, I remember my class 10 English teacher, who used to tell me to attempt the story writing option from the composition question, only if your friends think that you are a good story teller. Similarly, it goes for humor, if you are humorous, you would already know it. But, if you are not, try something else.
Knowloedge is no doubt required if someone wants to talk .... but If there is no humor.. it makes it mundane........ so oratory skills and humor keeps the delivery speech of knowledge alive....

For a good public speaker, it is very necessary to know what type of audiences he is going to deal with ? Will the head of the company be there or just co-workers? Are all participants experts at the topic or will there be novices present? Is there a mixed group of people representing different backgrounds or is everyone on the same page regarding technicalities? Depending on the audience, he should spend some time giving varying degrees of background on the material and explaining certain concepts.

I think this is one of the best idea contests on Toostep. Every one has contributed something useful. One thinks of an idea and that is already there. Whoever wants to be a good speaker can draw from pool ideas given in this.
while knowledge, passion, oratory skills aid the confidence of a public speaker, pre-speech analysis of the audience profile(background, experience, expectations, variance etc) & preparation for the 'first-impression' help him/her become a good speaker.
The idea is to transform the audience into GOOD LISTENERS first & deliver the message with confidence afterwards
1. Confidence
2. Knowledge
3. Humor
4. Practice
5. Voice Modulation
6.Presentation
Confidence, Voice Modality, presence of mind, Interaction with listners, and making the audience to speak.
There are many people who have knowledge but all of them can't become good speakers. Knowledge and content are the ingredients but if a speaker has low confidence the session becomes boring and people dont put attention, so confidence is more important.

Best orator should have deep knowledge of the subject on which he has to deliver the speech with self confidence. |

Good orator must have good knowledge attained through in depth reading and ability to present his ideas in a friendly manner with the help of some examples. Presentation ability holds the key and only way to attain it by breaking out of the shell of inhibitions.
deep knowledge with self confidence and boldness too.
Only a good listener can become a good speaker. A good speaker should have the ability to observe environment and listen to everyone deeply and understand what are effects of words. When a person will know what is liked and disliked by everyone only then it can speak with a carefree attitude and confidence.

When we speak ,besides confidence and knowledge about the subject,we have to understand that finally we have to reach the audience. If we are not focussed on the subject it wont attract the audience. If we are not maintaining right voice quality some of the listeners wont be able to understand the lecture.Speech modulation depending upon the expression that we want to convey.Language has to be as per the audience.Simple if addressing junior staff and sofisticated if addressing ceos.etc..Your posture is also important as a speaker. Some gr8 speakers keep moving on the stage so that they take everbody in to their fold.So these all things besides knowledge and confidence are important to make you a good speaker. |

AMIT,
I like your style in photo ,it reflects that you will be a very good orator/speaker.

Silence makes a person good speaker ! If you keep quite, and listen more and speak less, whatever you would speak or whatever would come out of your mind through your words would be cream of the expressions. And people would surely listen to you. |

An individual who practices on speech can be good speaker. A daily labour can also be a good speaker than an IAS officer or minister. A farmer can also be a good speaker than engineer or doctor. A medical doctor who has no knowldge about cultivtion can not speak more on agricultural issues. Hence, habits, practices, knowldge, self confidence make a peron good speaker.
HABITS AND PRACTICES ARE IMPORTANT. |

YOU can speak well, have confidence and attain and gain knowledge only when you are honest about what you are speaking. If you are honest with your belief and are conveying the same, you can easily reach across and irrespective of anything you are a good speaker and honesty gives you the means to be one. |

We should first understand the needs of our audience and match our contents to their needs. Understand our material thoroughly. Put what we have to say in a logical sequence. Ensure our speech will be captivating to our audience as well as worth their time and attention. Practice and rehearse speech at home or where you can be at ease and comfortable, in front of a mirror, our family, friends or colleagues. Use a tape-recorder and listen to our self. Videotape our presentation and analyze it. We should Know what our strong and weak points are. Emphasize our strong points during our presentation. When we are presenting in front of an audience, we are performing as an actor is on stage. How we are being perceived is very important. Dress appropriately for the occasion. Be solemn if our topic is serious. Present the desired image to our audience. Look pleasant, enthusiastic, confident, proud, but not arrogant. Remain calm. Appear relaxed, even if we feel nervous. Speak slowly, enunciate clearly, and show appropriate emotion and feeling relating to your topic. Establish rapport with our audience. Speak to the person farthest away from us to ensure your voice is loud enough to project to the back of the room. Vary the tone of our voice and dramatize if necessary. If a microphone is available, adjust and adapt your voice according. |

A good speaker always should be quoting good examples for every valid points he makes. This makes a good impression among the spectators. Also, he should know the subjects so well that he can easily give arguments for all his points and to face any question or opposition. |

Generally we mingle the ideas of good speaker and efficient speaker. All efficient speakers are not good speakers. Hitler was able to make the youth of his country crazy by his speeches. We do not rate him as a good speaker. Churchill organized combined effort to fight evil by his speeches. He is rated as a good speaker. In India also, some politicians are efficient speakers but they mislead the people, sow the seeds of dissension in their minds by using language, race, caste, religion, region etc., as their powerful instruments; try to divide the people on some reason or other, cut at the roots of democracy using fully the very same rights granted by democracy. Can we say that they are good speakers. A good speaker is one who is spurred spontaneously by good intention; an eagerness to help others; a willingness to share knowledge; a readiness to dispel ignorance and superstition. A good speaker is like a seasonal rain that helps the farmers to produce more. Even if he lacks some of the qualities of efficient speaker, his sincerity, truthfulness and purpose would more than offset those deficiencies and make others realize the importance of what he is saying. I am not saying that qualities of efficiency are not needed. They are much needed but they do not make a good speaker. Only the good intention of the speaker would make him a good speaker. |

Passion is like laughter, it's contagious. Having someone in front of an audience giving a speech in a monotone voice isn't going to really engage people. It's the people that have passion. The audience can feel this passion in the diction, the tonality, the body language of the speaker. Are these speakers genuinely passionate about the topic they're talking about? Maybe, maybe not. The point is that they can make it look passionate. They make it look like they care about the topic.
Being able to add an element of fun can really make all the difference. The more emotional levels a speech hits the audience, more rapport is built. It's really an amazing thing. If you shock them, if you make them laugh, if you make it fun, you will be able to powerfully persuade them. The element of fun, doesn't mean a joke. Fun is engaging the audience differently. I leave that for you to figure out because it is really dependent on your audience. People do not listien to a boring speaker or a speaker who speaks monotonously. This is a great way to impact the audience with more than just what you say. This could be a power point presentation on a screen or it could be as simple as an object in your hands. You can use something visual to really push a point across. Audience pays more intrest to images ,videos or diagrams or charts.
A speaker must have a lucid idea and a particular objective to achieve and a speaker must go for two way communication (Connect with the audience ) eye contact ,Body languange matters a lot .

I believe that we all are born same....its the circumstances and how we respond to them shapes us different. Thus, leader is not born but made. |
Employee will feel more confident when management shares the roadmap of the company and how his department/role contributes in that roadmap. |
I think management is a multifunctional role and the MBA curriculum provides that theoritical knowledge. and ofcourse without theory practical is blind. There are people who have been in management without MBA but the time to reach that level is... |
