Inspiring leadership

idea posted by Shyam S Project Leader/Managing Consultant, A leading EDA firm

When we create a project team, we usually select the best of the available resources. However, sometimes the team doesn't perform as well as expected.

This is most commonly due to lack of good leadership. The Project Manager / Leaders must be able to inspire the team to deliver their best. Individual creativity and talent must be encouraged to  the maximum extent possible. The Project Team Head must be free of bias and be able to inspire everybody in the team. The team will naturally deliver its best.

I believe that Inspiring leadership and good group dynamics are closely related. An inspiring leader will normally have a good well nit team committed to the goal. Hence success is ensured.

A Project Team leader/Project manager shud have some basic qualities...1) He shud be non-bias,2) He shud have no personal vested interests in the said project,3) He shud be totally transparent in his working/decision making,4) He shud have some knowledge of what each team member is going to perform and lastly He shud have sense of timing regarding his words,& actions. These qualities automatically inspire the team or motivate a team when ever and where ever required.

Standing up to management

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

Interesting idea contest dear friend, but from my point of view there are times when the PM will need to stand up to management on some issue. For instance when a PM's disagree with a decision or when they need to push back on a proposed change in scope, budget, resources, or timeline. At this time the project team wants to see the PM stand up to management. They want to know that their leader has the backbone to go to bat for them when needed. This will help to develop unity among the team members.

Enforcing rules never be an effective way to build a efficient team, but some issues comes in project lifecycle where if a PM stand against management it greatly help him to build a efficient team. perticularly on issues regarding negotiation for resources (manpower, time) & team appraisals etc.

Group Dynamics

idea posted by Resmi Maxim GENERAL MANAGER - OPERATIONS, SI PROPERTY (KERALA) PVT.LTD.,

There is no magic formula for "building a team ", but there are several techniques for building and enhancing teams, the major being group dynamics (hidden psycho-social forces that work among groups of people.  Team dynamics are the combination of interpersonal alchemy which, if tackled well, can provide support in reaching collective goals).  Teams are crude - they develop and change. Making good Project Teams requires a combination of enhancing skills, understanding of each other, communication and negotiation skills, and problem solving skills.  The closer the association between team goals and individual goals, the greater the sum of individual motivations for succeeding together. This is called Field Theory proposed by Kurt Lewin.

Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress.
Working together is success.

I do agree that team psychology is of paramount importance, since executions of projects depend on team work of all team members (professionals/ skilled and  semi-skilled workers, who are primarily human-beings with their own emotions, individual ideas and outlook, which may be often divergent on various issues) in the best possible ways.  In order to achieve the  common goal of commissioning the project at the right time, at right cost,  Iner-personal Relations and better Communuications between team members should be ensured.  Moreover, there should be proper  Motivation (monitary as well as  pleaasant working environments) for the participants on the project.  It goes without saying, PM should be technically sound with all current trends in the filed concerned.

I agree with you. It is group dynamics. The success of teams require group objective above self, harnessing the qualities and skills of individuals and above all having faith in every team member. The team leader has to be upright, sensitive and impartial.

Enforce the rules

idea posted by Dipen Trivedi Project Manager, 3i Infotech

According to me enforcing the rules into the team will help to build great teams. The PM needs to be willing to enforce the team rules. Rules, the way that the PM expects others to behave, can include everything from beginning on time form meeting to requesting vacation time. The best approach is to create  an environment where everybody is part of enforcing the rules. Enforcing has a major impact on the environment of the project.

Good people manger PMs & dedicated team members

idea posted by Jos Conil Architect, Ace Group Architects

A successful PM should also be a good people manger, which is very often an execption than the rule. The PM should have the vision to set realistic goals, to find the right type of people and to motivate them by maintaining good communication of ideas, challenges and concerns.

There should also be no mismatch of expectations between the team leader and the team members as to what they can deliver and what output is required to acheive the goals.

In certain cases the management is responsible to give the teams certain freedom to make their choices and hence to innovate by think out of the box. This keeps them from limiting their thinking and hence results in delivering best in class teams. This inturn leads to a lot of confidence among team members.

"Keep it Simple and use Common Sense"

idea posted by Saleel Deshpande Sr.Architectural Co-ordinator, Dar Al-Handasah(Shair and Partners)

Many a times it is found that while working on a project and if it is complex then we all(humans) tend to think more on it and unknowingly make it complicated, and try usiing all the skills an keeping common sense apart, this can be a natural reaction also.........so best solution for sucessful team work is to break the work in pieces(keep/make it simple) and apply common sense where ever required.breaking of work/job into pieces always helps to get good results in team work.

Executive should be close to team workers,he shold not be in airconditioned room and looking papers only, meeting meeting discussion and getting ideas from even a skilled worker will make the project sucess.Posting unskilled person or unqualifeid person to important role like safety engg works will make hole in project.Mechine in good condition only will help process,if any fault in mechine in heavy euipment will cause like DMRC constuction delhi fault. Heavy Mechine should be checked by skilled person before installed in sites.Engineers in day and night shift should watch concerte mixtures is that ok.Quality dept not seemed perfectly in companies. They are doing just papaer work only .
