Jayant a worthwhile initiative for a discussion. Branding a Nation is a huge task. "We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master." Public policy implications are extremely important, because any industry is heavily regulated in most countries and such regulations have far-reaching impacts on its competitiveness. Public policy implications with respect to the economic environment, the regulatory environment, and the market/industry environment should be explored. Recommendations for industrialized and developing country policymakers should be made on the basis of the study results:

I support this side views contributed, they are quite right.
Good Ujjval a heart felt write up. Yes indeed it’s the “People living and ruling a country, who contribute for its growth or for its downfall.”
The examples that you have taken for USA, JAPAN, GERMANY… the countries have prospered because of their strong leadership with a vision. It was a mutual growth factor for the people leading and being led.
India so far what ever development has done, I am sorry to say is “Inspite and Despite the governance. So a lesson with my frugal knowledge is that unless each and every individual living in India makes a conscious effort in his small way and in his own sphere to stand and strive for the best, then a baby step would be taken, towards a nation building which could be interpreted as "Nation as a brand!" The Economic, strategies, opportunities, etc will fall in place.

India has to learn form other countries how to set up an effective branding effort. Hire an outside party to identify your SWOT and the basic questions at the beginning to outside party because you would want to know how the outside world views |

Events like CWG are golden opportunities to showcase at the world stage, the capabilities that a nation possess. Like China received worldwide accolades in the Beijing Olympics & hence brand China got sky rocketed. I am wondering what impression the world 'd have with brand India having created such a huge mess??? Leave aside to think global,,,,first we have to look beyond our personal vaults & swiss banks. If we are not ourselves affectionate to our national pride,,,why the rest of the world 'd be? |

Shiuli,,thanks for your kind attention. Ya, perfectly right that today China is far ahead to us viz a viz brand value, overall development & clout that it enjoys,,,but events like what i have referred for China, gives exponential fillip to that doing in a manner what is can be called near perfect & what is expected when you want to become a brand.
Coming to the broader point that i have raised,,,a brand has a uniqueness from the very idea to the value it delivers,,,& its the civil society in this case that gives a certain identity to the nation apart from its geographical position, economy & its overall history.
By god's grace, we are a very proud country who can boast of her thousands of year of civilization & for the wonderful contributions that we have made so far for the betterment of this planet & human civilization as a whole.
But today, having many lessons from our past,,, at least,,when it comes to the nation,,,we should look beyond our personal interests & even we should forget them if its necessary,,,as i have said,,,the CWG which includes various Govt., Pvt., MNCs & individuals; leaves our faces red before world community,,& even for ourselves. When people Like Mr Anand is asked about his nationality,,,,we ourselves dent our brand image of being a nation.
So for the first part of a brand,,,,we should further explore, garner & adopt our unique culture, which is progressive, adaptive, humble & stresses over wisdom rather to intelligence and to quote, is very much in assimilation with the nature.
Coming to the practical aspect,,,I feel,,,our USP is our work force. We today may not be a very wealthy, capital rich nation but we have a very strong, skilled & adept work force. But again I personally feel,,,in our country there are many other factors that hampers entrepreneurship,,innovation & absolute professionalism to think beyond borders in general.
So its the people of America or people of Japan or Germany or the like, that have taken their country to where they stands now & are called brands.....similarly we the people of this country, only can contribute for that,,,no foreign people, technology or capital,,,,these can certainly be the major & important catalysts,,,but not the original compound.

In competitive world, every thing changes within seconds.Weakness becomes Strongest point because nobody knows "Collective Mental Disposition(Social Capital)".SWOT fails at this front. Through awareness, consciousness and conscientiousness, branding of India is possible?

Quality is imperative if we need to promote India as a brand. Besides the fact that manufacturing is cheaper in India owing to lower input costs, what the world also needs to know is that in addition to lower cost, India promises to deliver on quality. This will in itself go a long way for India as a Brand. |

Like Singapore promoted itself as a shopping destination, india should promote its rich diversity in its culture. Where else can you get to see so many people speaking so many different languages having so many different religious beleifs and tastes combining to progress as one. The other campaign by Malaysia where they claimed "Malaysia, truly Asia should also inspire us to come out with a notable line. Also it is not enough to just promote a line, it should be echoed at every airport and government office, restaurants and tourist spots uniformly to get the desired effect. |
