The air pollution level is drastically increasing and the primary cause for it is the growing number of vehicles. With the advanced technologies wrapped around us, it is sad to say that the pollution level in India is still high. Everyone talks about automobile pollution, its impacts on environment, its contribution to global warming and preventions but very few people are aware of how it is actually caused.
Now the main thing is, use of automobile is never going to end. In any case, people won't stop using automobiles. Then, what shall we do so that "automobile pollution" can be controlled in this kind of situationThe air pollution level is drastically increasing and the primary cause for it is the growing number of vehicles. Mridula, I agree with your point ...

Periodic servicing of vehicle and proper regular maintenance will definitely help in reducing the pollution levels.

1

1) Incorporated measures to be undertaken by the centre with respect to stringent annual inspection at respective RTO centres of every vehicle plying on the roads based on their physical conditions, routine engine performance, emission factors, etc 2) On a personal level one should definitely monitor performance of their own vehicle right from timely servicings, oil changes, dilipated or rather worn out parts & their subjective replacements and of course involvement of the human factor based on valuing a certain asset or piece or machinery.

Mrudula, proper care and regular maintenance of vehicles, compulsary pooling of vehicles, unnecessary throttling /overspeeding,reducing idle running, optimisation of the use of mass transport system running on CNG ,discplined commuters with excellant road sense application and respect for fellow commuters, photo monitored signalised junctions working 24x7 and above all well designed and maintained roadways with out pot holes/rough surface with proper signages will go a long way in drastically reducing the pollution level and bring it within permissible limits.

Hi,

Govt and Ngo's taking lot of steps to improve mass transport system and encouraging people to use the same.

Car pooling and Eco friendly vehicles are easiest ways to bring down the pollution

Thanks,

development of Mass public transport infrastructure for longer distances is the best way to reduce running of private vehicles on the road. this is the best way to reduce pollution.

for shorter distances with in a loacality(3-5 km)  public bicycles renting at a min cost would help reduce pollution from taxi/Autos

1

Public transport system must be powerful and less costly.

1

it is a very good way bring down the level of automobile pollution. specially in case of metro cities like delhi,calcutta,mumbai....we should make our public transoport system more effecient, confortable, this will also reduce the traffic in the roads..

introduce the fuel tax

idea posted by yukti saxena Consultant, IMG

I think goverment should introduce the fuel tax, according to this fuel retailer will have to pay a certain tax for each unit of fuel sold.It will definately decrease the fuel usage.

Dear Yukti,

I do not think this will work as irrespective of fuel price hike in the past and present people would still continue to go their way so long as it does not pinch their pockets substantially.

Avoid use of vehicle for small distance if possible.

idea posted by Imran Momin Software Developer, Aloha Technology Pvt. Ltd.

All the above ideas are good, the awareness about the pollution doesn't solve the problem. The action against or the control over that will be the best work out.

Try to avoid the use of the fuel based vehicles for small distance. Now days the electric vehicles are available works on the battery which is the best solution to avoid the pollution. And if you people don't mind the use of bicycle is always welcome because, in foreign countries peoples are serious about that problem and they have implemented these things in their daily life.

well its a known fact that air pollution is too rampant and india is set to become a hub in terms of the manufacturing of cars as well as becoming among the largest automotive market , well one way i defintely feel will help in reducing the pollution is increase the public transport distribution systems, which i believe will reduce the personnel vehicle usage and also reduce the number of cars on road reducing the commuting time as in major cities.Well as the preference for these public transport will depend on how the govt can introduce these systems an also proper mareketing of these systems among the upper class of the society, these elite class of people can be lured into usage of such systems if we provide them the correct vehicles like mercedes and volvo buses which have there presence among the upper class as well.the models of effective public transport can be found in ahmedabad in india and in mexico.encouraging comfortable and effective public transport mechanism is definitely a wasy out.

Jayaram I support you. We should bring many changes in the public transport system. The government should take necessary steps to control the pollution  by prohibiting the use of old vehicles and reducing the pollution caused by cabs and autos. The buses run by the government should also made hybrid. So the government and the transport system play a vital role in bringing down  the pollution level emitted by automobiles.

by Atul Kumar, Project Leader  | 01 19 2010 12:34:28 +0000

The government of India and all state government has to work towards improving the state transportation system for improved buses and services and better utilization of sources. This is the only way to reduce the pollution. Electic based Trains and eco friendly fules based fuels can reduce the pollution level. Congesstion charges on major cities will also help to reduce the usage of cars.

So push the government to improve the infrasatructure for betterment of Indian citizens.

Though there are electric vehicles available in our country, but the number is very low.We should use more and more battery operated vehicles wherever possible. The level of pollution will be drastically low by this way, which also saves fuel for the future generation.

To reduce CO, NOx, HC and Particulate matter by using the device like Turbo chager, Catalytic convertor, EGR

idea posted by Surajit Banerjee Project Coordinator, Angelique International Limited

There are three major pollution happened by automobiles. 1) Positive Crank Case ventillation, 2) Evaporative Emission, 3) Exhaust Emission

Turbo Charger which helps to reduce the CO. If in exhaust system if there is unburnt fuel, it cause to produce high level of CO. Turbo helps to sent huge amount of Oxygen which helps to reduce by  burning patrol/diesel in approx 100% and increase Carbon di oxide instead of carbon monoxide.

Catalytic convertor is simple catalyst which help to reduce Oxide of Nitrogen. It's inside Pt-Cd-Rh, by a chemical process(Oxidation-Reduction) reduce NOx.

EGRis called Exhaust Gas Recirculating System which helps in Positive Crank Case ventilation. By this process the fuel vapour which comes out thru engine ventilation pipe, it's return back again into the fresh air path and goes inside the engine for burn.

Evaporative pollution which occurs due to fuel vapour from the fuel system. Previous engine system specially in petrol engine, use only carburattor which doesnot have any returning path. Now a days it's already introduce the MPFI, by which the unburnt excess fuel goes back thru return line to Fuel Tank.

Also our fuel quality should be increase and decrease the sulpur level, which cause pollution. The cetane and octane no of petrol and diesel should follow as per the SAE Norms so that quality of petrol and diesel be in proper grade.

The governments of our country have to undertake the initiatives like recycling of bio-degradable waste which can produce energy like methane. And methane while be burnt then it would neutralize other environmental pollution on the one hand and the other fossil fuel use will be reduced on the other. Depletion of Forests must be stopped and drive for forestation has to be taken. Use of chemical fertilizer in the agriculture has to be reduced and use organic manure has to be introduced. Pesticides have to be replaced with herbicides. Therefore, change of mind set of the ruling elites is required to be changed and that must be percolated to the bottom level of the society.

Also, while driving, its good to drive within a range of 50-60 kmph as speeding leads to high fuel consumption resulting in higher pollutionWe should always avoid unnecessary idling of the engine which may increase the fuel consumption and also results in extra emissions i.e, if the vehicle is idle for more than two minutes, it is best to turn off the ignition. Yes, its always advice able to switch off the vehicles when there is atleast 15 seconds of red signal or when the traffic is total jammed. Most of them keep their vehicles all time ON even when there is a long red signal and on that high idling. ... Thank you, Manish N

2) transport inspectors  ang related official want to strictly follow the rules and regulation(overload trucks, old buses etc)

3)individual person need education about pollution across india, it is possible by

one good example  1) daily we saw so many cars and bikes advertising in all channels

but  our people never saw about automobile pollution advertisment in TV CHANNEL AND NEWS PAPER

SO WE WANT CREATE SMALL DOCUMENTRY FLIMS   (HOW TO USE VEHICLE AND MAINTAINING), ADVERTISEMENT, AND SHOWS MINIMUM 10 TIMES PER DAY IN ALL TV CHANNEL,AND RADIOS AND NEWS PAPER

ABOVE POINTS ARE FEW EXAMPLE FOR CREATING AWARENESS ABOUT  POLLOUTION

idea posted by Yellapragada anand krishna naga bhushana rao Mechanical Engineer-Other, KVK Energy & Infra structure

There are lot of vehicles which are running on the roads even after completion of 15 years which are making lot of Pollution. There are so many problems causing automobile pollution like,

1. Utilizing of petrol with kerosene in Automobiles

2. The corruption prevailing in India which leads to the freely moving of pollution causing vehicles on the road.

3. Not having power start up to the vehicles causing the motorist not to stop the vehicle in traffic jams or at signals and the signal timing is also the factor causing the motorist not to stop the vehicle.

4. The roads are not at wide enough for this huge traffic causing jams leading to pollution.

So the advanced technologies in India can  decrease the pollution a little bit like the above 3rd factor but also the other  factors to be Followed to decrease the pollution.

Electric cars and various other eco-friendly cars are a good idea but practically inapplicable mainly due to the cost involved with it. the best solution is to introduce some laws regarding the usage of vehicles. office goers must compulsorily use the public transport and those who want to use the private vehicles must be asked to pay entrainment task. Some such laws should be introduced to restrict the usage of the various vehicles.

The use of Electric vehicles should be encourages and there should a system of battery like equipment should be provided. Instead of keeping the automobile idle during charging, the use of spare battery should be enabled while the other one is being charged. If these charged up batteries are availabe in fule stations, this will enable to use it for long distances.

Apart from, of course, regular maintenance and thrifty use of your automobile, the need for using it cannot completely be denied.

Hybrid vehicles today provide technology where every litre of fuel can give more mileage. These convert the vehicle motion to charge the internal car battery almost doubling fuel mileage. Needless to say, this also means reducing the vehicular effluents and hence pollution by half

Efficient roads

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Our roads are not scientificaly designed, so it requires more gear changes per km drive which throws out more pollutants than other countries. It consumes more gas too.

What I have seen abroad is even inner city roads are efficient to an extent there one cannot enter into a road from a bylane directly, one has to take deviations to an entry point which is designed to maeke the entry trouble free instead of needing to wait for the trafic to flow by before one can step in or nose your way into a main lane. So trafics are not blocked nobody notices entry and exit. So every inner city and highways need be redesigned which will bring down pollution.

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Here in India one need more gear changes per km drive which make the vehicle throw out more pollutants into the air than is necessary for that distant drive. For this we need more scientifice road system which is not the way Indian roads are constructed.

What I have seen abroad is one even in inner city roads one cannot make entries from bylanes. To do so here one has to wait and pollute for some time before others pass by when one can make the entry. There the roads are created such that one has to deviate to entry points from where entry is easy and nobody notices the entry or exits. The entry and exit points are scientificaly designed to facilitate not waiting time and more gear changes per unit distance of drive.

Ours is an outdated system of roads and our inner city roads and highways need be redesigned to avoid pollution and to getter efficiency and comfort from car drives.
