As more businesses are forced to downsize, you may find yourself laid off from your current position. This layoff may be permanent or temporary, it often depends on the needs and current state of your employer.

When it comes to layoffs one of the most commonly asked questions is, what should I do?

So what one should do if they are laid off from their job?  Do give your views here, as it will be helpful for others.

Be Positive, Refresh your skills, find another job

idea posted by Shaju George Facilities/Construction Manager, IBS Software Services (P) Ltd

Lay - offs are now a days happening not because of employees incompetancy. It is mainly due to market conditions. So one should always think positive and should try hard to find out another opportunity at the earliest. Market is still open.. some times there could be little struggle but be positive.. For those who can afford higher studies.. this will be the best time.. to refresh skills.

Very True if you feel good you will get something dont let your morale fall and hurt you

Laid off...word is very simple but effects badly. The working class person who is compltly depand on his job & earnings can best understand this.

I wish no one has to face this more, but yaa if some one face so best idea is to face it. Dont run of this. Be very positive, the life is not end here, take the time upto switiching new job as learning & refreshing you personally & professionally.

There's no point being negative. You need pump fuel to your kitty and start again. Don't get morose. You hone up your skills and then start looking for job.

Laid off blues

Remember this all the time. When you went for the job you were looking for a better pay or security. Now that you are laid off why not do the same. Go find another job. There is a old saying and it is true today. "If you work for someone else you will always be looking for a job over and over. If you work for yourself you will never be looking for another job." It is up to you and don't use the excuse you need money. Money is not a tool it can not fix anything. What would you do if there was no more money. Think about it! We are becomming lazy in our thinking.

If you did good and you are faithful to your present job. Must say your present employer that you deserve this position and do not leave without any proper reason.

I also agree that if the employee is not at fault then he must raise his voice against the decision.

Be creative

When there are mass lay offs, it means it is the ill performance of the employer, and not you. So do not loose confidence, or hope or your self esteem. Have courage to face challenge that is the first quality of a leader at any level.

Now put on your creativity hat and make your self required by the industry or the field you are strong at. What are essential for that?

1. Patience

2. Perseverence

3. Re-invent yourselves by introspection as well as peer feedback. Note that feedbacks are usually hard to take. So be prepared to take them with a pinch of salt.

4. Maintain positive attitude and re-orient yourself to the changing times

5. make constructive use of this period to establish your network as well as become visible

6. Start using internet to network and blog and keep looking for opportunities. Follow the advice from trusted sources on how to approach in converting an opportunity into an offer. having said that, it is always less than 5% of the times you will succeed, so you need to increase your trials

7. Provide help and advice to issues related to your areas of expertise and keep doing something new in the direction that will help you land in an assignment

8. Do training in any form - one on one, class room at the corporate offices or go back to the employer and suggest to him you would train the remaining staff, without the need for external trainers.

9. Finally, don't worry, be happy. When the recession is over, people will come running behind you with offers. In the mean time, don't loose your cool, polish your strengths, upgrade your skills, work on your weaknesses and remember to do exercise to keep your health fit to complete this uphill task. you are not alone whole world is with you, including governments.

When you are in a tunnel, keep walking. Then only you will see the light of the day. If you just sit where you are you will remain there.

First you believe in yourself and your strengths, try to reduce your weeknesses, take it as an opportunity, serach for better industry and stream as well, no matter what is your experience in a particular field.

Start taking fresh breath. The company which is giving layoffs in this period, may not survive for a long time.

Though this period is only for one year. I am expecting; it will be over by March 2010.

if you are adding value to the organisation you would never be laid off.contribute positively to the organisation and forget about being layed off.if you are giving positive returns to the organisation you cannot be layed off.

prepare for the worse..have some savings ,have fixed deposits, have some other source of income.so that you would have enough to manage the worse times.

be positive..try to learn the lessons ,you would be learning a lot of them in the worse times.

increase you competitive ness..increase your skills..spend some time with your family members whom you have ignored because you were busy.

spend a part of your salary so that it create employement for others and the cycle continues and reaches you.

I must say that Mr.Sandesh has given a very good comment to the question as well as mentioned must remember tips for a professional. He is absolutely right that there will be no fear of being laid-off by the company in the mind of an employee if he is an asset to the company, doing his work honestly and completely.

Become an entrepreneur or join one!!

idea posted by SR Sham Sunder CEO/MD/Director Technoaid

When large scale layoffs take place, that means the company was not ready for contingencies.

For an entrepreneur, a crisis is an opportunity. A problem area is an opportunity area.  The opportunity area in laying off firm is good manpower and an outsourcing possibility.  So network (after separating good laidoff employees from bad ones) other laid off workers, arrive at a business proposal and give to your own company.

Any company that lays off largescale employees will have high overhead costs.  If you all become entrepreneurs, you can make some sacrifices initially and later on grow.  Your initial sacrifice is lower overheads to turnout the same job your company was turning out.  But you take a share in profits where you were depending on salary!

When things improve, you will get more orders and start earning much more than you were, when you were working.

So look at layoff as an opportunity where you will get perfect skill set at lesser cost.  If you are not entrepreneurial, however, identify a leader amongst you and encourage him or group of leaders to become entrepreneurial.  You may join as employee with them.  This is better than brooding over the layoff.

Hi,

If you are facing such problem don’t be panic. Just take a break for few days make a strategy for your future and work on it. Try to search for the areas in which you can explore yourself more. And start your career with a new energy and enthusiasm. And as you already have experience and knowledge you just have to brush up yourself.

Regards,

Rohini

Apply SKILL SET to similar vertical & Move ON!

idea posted by Makrand Bhave Marketing & MICE, WIZCRAFT International

I feel that its time to look for a similar vertical that matches at least 70% of your skill set! I am sure that there will be takers who in the throes of recession would still not give up and keep plugging with innovations, strategies and people. If you are laid off in one there has to be another that needs YOU!

Be positive, keep your head on the shoulders, do not slump and project an image of CONFIDENCE!

Look for another Job

idea posted by Brajesh Sharma Business Analyst, Mentor Graphics

According to me this should be the priority, like finding an another job, as the settlement payment that has given by the company is not going to last long., so one should always be in search of job and this should be the prime motto of a laid off employee there is no time to relax, and no matter if you don't get the same salary as the previous job did, just one has to gain entry into an organization and show your work and worth to the organization, as like you are indispensalbe for them, there is still recruitment going on out there for experienced candidates..

You have got a break and use it appropriately. Dont forget the the economy runs on a cycle so if it is down today, it will again move upwards.

Refresh and recharge yourself .. spend sometime with you parents and family. seek their advice.. Even u can seek advice frm your one or two friends... find out your strengths and weaknesses and accept one thing that it is not possible for a single person to become master in all so give effort to sharpen your strengths , if possible acquire new skills and prepare yourself for the next best opprotunity.

becasue u know

YOU ARE THE BEST.....
