dear members, i got this from somewhere, but don't know the author and hence must credit anonymously. notwithstanding, there is an enormous lesson here - each one of us may like to word it in his own way. do read this short article and let us see what each one sees into the behaviour of the officer. i await your insights.

After getting freedom, a meeting was organized to select the first General of Indian Army. Jawahar Lal Nehru was heading the meeting. Leaders and Army officers were discussing as to whom this responsibility should be given. In between the discussion Nehru said, "I think we should appoint a British Officer as a General of Indian Army as we don't have enough experience to lead the same." Everybody supported Nehru because the PM's suggestion had to be agreed with ! But one of the army officers abruptly said, "I have a point, sir." Nehru replied, "Yes, gentleman. You are free to speak."

The army officer said,"You see, sir, we don't have enough experience to lead the nation too, so shouldn't we appoint a Britisher as the first PM of India?" The meeting hall suddenly went quiet. Then, Nehru said, "Are you ready to be the first General of Indian Army? Here was a golden chance to accept the offer and become the first army chief, but the officer refused the same and said, "Sir, we have a very talented army officer, my senior, Lt. Gen. Cariappa, who is the most deserving among us."

The army officer who raised his voice against the PM was Lietenant General Nathu Singh Rathore, the 1st Lietenant General of the Indian Army.

discipline

idea posted by Brigadier (Retd) Sunil Chadha, Nil

this may surprise some, but i call it discipline !! the definition of discipline i believe in goes as follows - "it is the ability to subjugate one's personal desire to shine for the larger good of the group working towards the group goal."

besides your responses, both the definition and my views are also open to debate and critisism.

Character

Character building is the very essence of education. "Discipline", "honesty", etc. are relative terms. We are witnessing the most honest and disciplined leaders have catapulted from their principles to be in the midst of wrong-doers!

Sir, i see it as a character, for the very reason that the offr exhibited integrity and loyalty as to oneself, his seniors and to the nation, subordinating personal interests to larger org goals, as you rightly said, and which is a "must have" for making a strong character. Discipline, i believe, is the second most sought after quality in the array. and therefore can bluntly be put as species of a character, which is relatively a larger term..

Understanding Quality

Quality is the Absence of Problems

Something doesn’t cause me any problems, and I have no complaints about it, it doesn’t get in the way of work or play, it’s always held up, never breaks, never dies, it’s “Old Reliable” – that’s a sure sign of quality, right?

Saying that quality is the absence of problems doesn’t go far enough, because it doesn’t address the big picture around problems: problems for whom? Take something like a software program – you can expect different people to be different kinds of users, with different needs that involve using the software with different goals in mind, and probably using different tools within the software.

Say the software has a function that most people will never need to use, like the old “convert the file to Sanskrit” command; if that function does not work, but most users won’t come across that failure, does the problem nonetheless exist?
