India is experiencing all-round growth. Not just in major sectors of its economy, but also in terms of its working/work-capable population. This economic growth throws up opportunities as well as equivalent challenges for it. A major one being how to guide the young educated population in the right direction.

Students who graduate on to become a part of the working population form the basic foundation of a country's economy (Although no one would argue the important role of the uneducated population as well.). And it is this population that needs to be guided in the right direction to get the maximum of their potential so as to maximize the most valuable asset a country has - its working population.

Promoting the development of core skills of a person through counselling centres

idea posted by Sanjay Suvarna Senior Software Developer, a MNC

What happens, in not just India but in most of the developed/developing countries is that most children are taught right from the start to be good in academics and get a good promising job. Little to no attention is paid to the actual/inherent skills the child has. A rat race mindset is inculcated where they are shown the finish line and told to race towards it without a second thought.

There are certain skills that are there in every individual and in which he/she could excel if exposed to the right stimulus. It is these skills/possibilities that need to be identified at a young age to promote it to its right level.

Our education system (although being criticized for being too generalized) is quite good in covering up a whole gamut of areas for an individual to explore the right area of his calling. Students could be guided, encouraged from a very young age to excel in the field which they enjoy.

Instituting good quality career counselling centres in schools and junior colleges is one of the ways in which the inherent skills of a young individual could be identified and his/her potential could be tapped in the right area. A persons liking may or may not be the actual area in which he/she could excel and it is here that aptitude tests designed to assess various skills need to be designed by the counselling committee in the schools/colleges apart from various other activitiesto promote the identified skill of the individual.

Parents and teachers should guide the way

idea posted by Mahalakshmi Subramanium QA/QC Manager, Genpact

India is a democratic country, full of choices and opportunities. Freedom of choice is a birth right. Still, guidance and advice from elders or adults is required by everyone. For choosing the right career the youth need for guidance and support from the elders. In this respect, parents are one of the major factors that influence a student into the area of study he or she wishes to choose. Apart from parents, the school and especially teachers play a major role in influencing a student. Teachers, while acting as a guiding light, reinforce their values and ideals upon young students. The mass media too has a part to play in a student’s search for the right career option.

The right direction starts not at the primary stage but also at middle stage of one's life when one enters in school or college or when searching for a job after passed out. Parents and teachers are the two ends to build the base for one's career management roadmap. The path to set one's goal keeps changing with the time, efforts and education attained. "Where is he and Where does he want to be and Where will he be " but the biggest hitch is "How will it executed to plan for the right path?" Parents and teachers are the first to last stage path builder who make one's capability to achieve that right path.

Reduce Stress Levels

idea posted by Ashish Gandhi CEO/MD/Director, Creative Director, PostBox Communications

Today when i see school going students,

- They carry a much heavier school bags than a worker at the mines/mills/factories!

- They work harder than both their parents put together

- They have an ever rising pressure to prove themselves to their parents/teacher/costudents.

- And Yeah, lately, they are killing themselves. Literally!!!

first and foremost, clean this mess. the government, parents, teacher, us. we have to understand their caliber and not be embarrassed or ashamed by whatever the results are. Being strict and being cruel, 2 very different things but separated by a very thin line.

Also, in todays world, In India a vast majority or group of people are getting really high ranks and % in their career defining exams. there has to be something wrong there. the Education Ministry and others involved must find out what is it which is a loose end. i do agree students have grown much smarter and this generation is much advanced and they will do wonders ahead but there has to be a NEW way to measure the right intellect, IQ, Smartness, Willingness & Direction and Inclination of these students as i believe the read knowledge is not enough to survive and succeed in this world (of course it does come handy!). May be its time we enhanced our Education system.

Include the followingin the Schools

- Teach with respect towards the Studies, Books AND STUDENTS. They are human and they may make mistakes but that does not make them any lower in terms of sense, intelligence and IQ than any other. Respect definitely gives the sense of confidence and relaxation.

- IQ Tests (every year to measure if the student is keeping up with the surrounding or if there is something going on with him) (the IQ tests will have to be designed based on each standards levels, this can be done by the pros in this area :))

- Inclination Tests (we need to know what are the likes and dislikes of "A" student. someone needs to keep a check throughout their schooling period and at the career defining exams you analyze for the best for his future)

- Street Smartness Tips n Tricks (of course, this is one thing you cant teach but you can help them understand what is what!)

- Freedom of Speech Class (they cant be scared of everyone all their life. give them the training to be able to talk and speak for themselves or for whatever they want to.)

- Career Counselling (an in house career counselling will definitely help students understand the path they should take. of course this is just a guidance and not a compulsion but this gives them a food for thought in deciding their career options.)

- And Last but not the least, an In House Psychiatrist who will take care of their worries and problems and talk them out of any burden or anything. (this may help reducing the stress and unwanted troubles and of course in turn may help reducing these stupid suicides).

i do believe that some of the services are already provided in International standard schools and probably in Boarding Schools but this Initiatives are needed to be taken by the Government and made available in all the public and private schools.

of course there is a cost attached to the same but i believe that Government is giving some budget to the Education Ministry and god knows what they do with that. i dont see any improvements in any public school, teachers are not being paid enough to match up to their intellect and education levels. less of faculties, and even senseless faculties many times. i mean its not that we dont have manpower, its just that there is no WILL to do something.

This is my biggest problem with India Government. NO ONE wants to do anything to bring up the levels. Our teachers and Faculties dont give any respect to our students and young generation. BUT still they EXPECT that from them. WHY???

By identifying the passion & capability

idea posted by DIPAK RANCHHODBHAI PATEL QA&QC-Engineer, INOX INDIA LTD

Most of the time young people choose their career as guided by their parents and teachers, And most of the time it is based on the current trend rather than considering the capability, passion and long term perspectives. So it is the duty of parents & teachers to know the available career options and choose the one which most suits the performer.
