Back end operations

idea posted by Dr. Siddharth Varma Professor, International Management Institute

Make sure your back end operations are able to support your front end. How will payments be accepted? How does the click of a mouse get converted into an order? How do your store people know of the order? How will deliveries be done to the customer? What will be your lead times? Answering these minute details can make your E-retailing a success.

Completely agree with what Siddharth has mentioned. This gave me an idea too.Let System map the delivery address of the customer with companies nearest warehouse/store who has to take this call and ensure the delivery is done in time. Once delivery is done by Store or warehouse the concern has to come and close the transaction in system else system will reflect the same as IN-TRANSIT. Controls should always be in place to ensure smooth functioning.

As said by Sidharth, strong back end operations are necessary in any successful retail business. We also need to have good internet security for our datas and their transactions. As Kiran has already said, good selling depends on how successful differentiation of the product has been done.

Online security is a must for any e-commerce company to exist. As suggested by Prof. to be successful the company needs to have strong back end operations to support the order prosessing. If backend ops cannot process the order as per the terms given on webiste it will create a negative impact on the company.

Differentiation in product offering is very crucial. If the cutomer can buy a product from a store at the same price what we are offering , then he will prefer to go with them, we need to be very competetive on our pricing.

Protection to details

idea posted by Shailena Varma Logistics Manager, Target

In my opinion the main thing to do is to make a secured site and get a secure certificate and ensure that all credit card details and financial details of the consumer are protected. There should be a protection for consumers privacy. It would increase consumer confidence.

Ypou have already booked the two KEY ideas!!! I support both!

Make it easy to transact.

The other important thing to do is to provide a detailed catalog on the products in the web site. It should be easy for the the user to browse from any part of the site without feeling lost. If he feels lost then he will leave the site. And there should not be any confusion in the transaction process.

Everyday New theme...

It is much more easier to review the ADD contents area of the website and by providing a new product/concept/Brand every day will add more freshness to viewing ,providing a constant updation will kill the stale website perception.

What I heard

Only thing I know about e-commerce now is that this season may be post meltdown they are doing booming business. My only experience is buying a cordless phone and some books and I had no problem with the credit card transactions even foreign sites from where I bought a website. Probably one has to look for the Verizon site sign whether the transaction is secured by Verizon.

A host of things

idea posted by Devadas Krishnan Marketing Manager, Microland

Like most of you had mentioned but not restricting to.. IMHO the key must-dos are

1. Site Attractiveness (design and UI)

2. Navigability (design and UI)

3. Security

4. Transparency and detailing(to the customer)

5. Site Availability (uptime and no broken pages)

6. Logistics, if required (back end)

7. Ease (Workflow should be simple to the end user)

8. Review mechanism

Enhance the experience

idea posted by Dr. Siddharth Varma Professor, International Management Institute

Another thing that e-retailers must take care is the "look and feel" experience that a shopper has. Perhaps "feel" can not be brought on the screen but at least the product must shown in sufficient detail in different views with detailed specifications so that the customer has an experience which is close to face to face shopping at a store.

Enhance the experience is it's own importance because if the 'look n feel' is not good customer will hesitate and will not go ahead n  buy. There should be features like 360 degree moment of each product and user should be allowed to select different colors in which he/she can buy the same specially applicable in case of electronics.

On time Delivery

idea posted by Deepak Agrawal Consultant, Independent Consultant

I think we have discussed all the points regarding buying the product like, security, feel factor, catalogue display etc. however I would like to add that though we are selling product electronically but customer will receive the product physically.

I think there should be proper coordination between order execution and delivery. In order to make e-commerce competitive to store sales, delivery should be made approriately and on time.

Come up with offers and make it a customer friendly platform

idea posted by Anna George Web Analyst, NichePro Consulting LLC
Customers would encourage ecommerce if they can buy the things via internet at a price cheaper than the market price. Also the page should be customer friendly. Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. Nichepro Technologies. Bangalore. http://www.nichesuite.com
