Apparently thicker is better — at least when it comes to paving roads. The critical thing is good design; If you can’t afford a good design, I tell agencies and municipalities, you can’t afford to waste your money on a poor design — you’ll just be throwing your money away. |

There is a lot that can be said about road construction but for any road construction to be successful there has to be improvements. Especially continuous improvements for better benefits & longevity.
Depending on where roads will be located, there should be:
- ~better roads built starting from the bottom up
- ~better safety for pedestrians that walk such as building sidewalks
- ~some roads should be adapted to suit pedestrians & motor vehicles
- ~there should be better guidelines for how roads are to be used by pedestrians & motor vehicles
- ~there should be guidelines for eco and environment friendly road construction & better road construction techniques.
Many times it can stem from not having the right strategic planning & strategic management in place. Having the right road environment and infrastructure in place is very important for road safety in addition to having better laws, better guidelines, better road building & management techniques.

This is in reply of Mr Saleel , Dy.Chief Architect, Al-Hamad Construction and Development co.W.L.L about bad execution of roads. Contractors who get the the contract, have to pay minimum of 10%, top to bottom of our engineering diplomats. then comes the thirst of site engineers. So contractors have no way except bad and inferior quality execution to maintain their marginal profit. our system is corrupted from top to bottom
I feel we should have roads that suit our conditions and that are up to international standards.

There are clear indications that approximately 80% of the total accummulated erosion over the life of the roads occurs within the first year of the construction. Of that, most of it is directly linked to the construction phase. The pitiable conditions of new could be felt any where. So better techniques while framing the proposals could result better and long durable roads. |

To: Mohammad Bakhsh, Thanks for the support. ~Renee
i never knew Rene has better appreciation of road planning and construction.i support her idea with rider that better Road construction techniques are necessary for road construction.
The road building industry is facing huge challenges such as better, quicker and cheaper product. However to achieve these ambitious goals, the sector must move faster in the direction of innovation. The better road construction techniques are the only alternative to the existing ones.Stake holders cooperation and government support could go a long way in developing the right approach.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN –
Sector ‘Highways’ must …… Guide - ways:
1. PURPOSE The purpose of this Environmental Management Plan
(EMP) is to provide a framework for the EPC Contractor to manage his
construction activities in such a way, so as not to bring any harmful affect or
to damage the environment in the vicinity of his works. Wherever possible, the
EPC Contractor shall also strive to minimize such negative impacts arising from
environmental damage with the final objective of meeting the conditions
stipulated in the Concession Agreement (CA) and to the satisfaction of the
highways, and Pollution Control Board EPC Contractor appoints an Organization / Institution,
consisting of a
team of Environmental Specialists for the purpose of periodical environmental
monitoring, sampling, and analysis, environmental Inspection and auditing.

In INDIA what ever you set guide lines specifications, methods, technology, for FREINDLY ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS The root cause for failure to meet the standerds is CURRUPTION from bottom to top. Once we eradicate this menace probably we can meet common mans dreams ie INDIA'S Dreams. One thing I would like to emphesize & add, that our beloved ancesters built better roads with common ordinary soil they took heavy loads on that, built world famous monuments, dams, gardens,& so on... without help of any extraordinary mechanisms. All this is for their DEDICATIONS COMMITMENTS for the cause of SOCIETY. |

I agree that corruption is the root cause of all problems or failures. With the arrival of computer and modern technology, sufficient information regarding design parameters, construction methodology, suitable materials etc. are available; but who is interested in following those guidelines? Probably nobody.
We all know the famous episode of Satendra Dubey, the acclaimed deceased IIT engineer. No one wants to become another Dubey. If classified information gets vented through PMO office, then no one can do any good to this country. We talk big, but mentally we are really small.

while we discuss this isin't it food for thought that no roads are ever destined to meet together to solve ones delima that wether it should be starit or curved.

To start with, ask some private party to put their money in construction and take responsibility of maintenance. Now for that party to complete the job in time and with good quality, heavy mechanisation of construction work will become a must...and it is. But for usage of heavy machines 3 types of manpower is required: 1. The one who operates the machine 2. The one who maintains the machine 3. The one who understands the interface between mechanical and civil engineering aspects of the machine. For optimum utilisation of machines the trained manpower is a must. I have seen contractors whose operations team is not aware of the full potential of their plants, sometimes even don't know the correct method of calibration of plant. If these things happen along with the right support from government in land acquisition and law and order, there is no doubt that 20 km/day will not remain a 'demanding' target. |

I think the present technique is being applyied for Road Project is good and echo friendly with Inidan atmousphere. There is no need to change but try to make adopt more superior techs.

i feel that given the importance of roads as brought out, we need to look at the issue holistically. i guess we need to increase the scope from building better roads to looking at better integrated transportation management systems - "intelligent transport management systems" with tracking and monitoring capabilities thrown in (and surely safe construction activities too). besides the inherent advantages of good roads, there are a host of other additional benefits to be derived . warmest to all. |
