In 2009, IT faced the problem of cutting costs without affecting the productivity of business users. IT organizations also took a hard look at the way IT is managed and organized and seeked simpler and better ways to serve the business' needs. This crisis affected the future of IT: Packaged apps, cloud computing, and software-as-a-service are potentially capable of providing deep savings on IT services. Adopting these services changes the business model under which IT management vendors operate.

So, what, according to you, software developers should look out in 2010 which can give them very good opportunities in the coming years?

Java 7 and Dot Net 4.0, or, Java 7 vrs Dot Net 4.0!

idea posted by Deepesh Basu Technical Architect, DVB CP/CM

While Java undoubtedly is still One of the Major Platform Independent Languages around, Dot Net too has promising features, specially in the realm of RAD, as well as with WCF, WPF, WDF....

The New features of Java 7 may be summarized as:-

  1. JSR 294 - Modularization
  2. JSR 292 - JVM Support for dynamic languages
  3. JSR 203 - New I/O APIs including Asynchronous I/O (not just non blocking I/O), File System API
  4. Also, some neat programming features

Similarly, Dot Net 4 brings along some cool geek features too, like:-

  1. PlatformWave
  2. Developer Delight - More easy to use development environments from Microsft.
  3. Departmental Applications
  4. Cloud Computing
  5. Application life cycle management
More information awaits each one of US in every corner of the Web, but being a Embedded Systems Developer, I don't expect Much; as neither PicoJava/KVM, nor Windows eMbedded VC++ enchants us much, we are still faithful and satisfied with pretty Old, Native and Humble C
[:(]
A forward port of 6u10 features (Java Kernal, QUickstarter, New Plug-in, etc.)

No doubt .net and java are the most interested technologies in today's world because of their security and designing and new features will give the work made easy to everyone.

so who has interest in java they can settle there and who has interest in .net they can fix there.(but now a days .net is most because easy to develop and at most compared with java it is secured also)

But the problem is most of the sectors do not trust the MS platforms , one of the major sectors is the BFSI
and MS has made a repo for it self for having security loop holes on top of that every black hat person is after MS to exploit its weaknesses and this is again scary for people who adopt it espacially the sensittive information holder

SaaS, SOA, Cloud Computing, Mobile Computing

idea posted by Manjunath Patil Marketing Analyst, ORACLE Corporation

Any one even remotely related to Information Technology world cannot escape to notice advancements of these technologies/paradigms in the year 2010:

1. SaaS(Software as a Service): Selling Software as a Service.

2. SOA(Service Oriented Architecture): A new paradigm in how Enterprise architectures are built.

3. Cloud Computing: More impetus to everything that is Web based.

4. Mobile Computing: Mobile is the new Laptop.

Everything will flow around SOA. Conceptwise SOA is too different than what generally called to webservice as a SOA.

Also SaaS,SOA,Cloud with virtualization  can be treat together to get the complete benefit of reusebility and faster adoption to new business rules whether it is mobile computing or Enterprise.

But Yes ........ This is a default future ...

License free package which is globally accepted...!

idea posted by Satwinder Singh Program Manager, Confidential
Software and Applications are very different. Going as par with the question: Talking about the softwares - There should be one recognized global package with most of the security features where developers can show expertise and upgrade the pack with new versions, instead of the issue below-- I think the major issue is with the change.. for how many years we have been learning new technologies/languages and by the time we think we are experts.. suddenly new technology takes over...!! There should be a one complete package for providing solutions based on small/medium/large size requirements....! So I believe Software developers should look out for a better interface, a flexible package and free integrated environment which can cause us to earn expertise for the rest of the lifetime..!

Knowing the Future Browsers

idea posted by Radhakrishna Marar Business Analyst, Oracle

One of the easiest ways to get the overtake our fellow developers is to keep a close eye on upcoming versions of our favorite browsers. In November, Internet explorer started work on IE9. It had huge improvements in Javascripts, performance, hardware acceleration for graphics, and some promising signs on the CSS3 support front which made it possible for IE9 to get launch by 2011. 2009 also saw the launch of Firefox 3.6 beta, HTML 5’s local file access API and Google Chrome Extensions.

you spoke my heart Mr Radhakrishna,

Cloud based apps will certainly trigger a whole new world of software development and will increase the user base drastically.I am betting on the success of Google Chrome and Chrome OS.

A quick point on the graphics , it s not just the graphics accessibility of the browser but also storage, adn CPU performance as wlll that will all be delivered online !! O3D ( a low level graphics API) initiated by Google is capable of doing things which only software can dream off !!

Thank you so much for referring :D

Application development on Small - miniature appliances

idea posted by Raghu Kastury Principal Consultant & Head of Strategic Business Unit - Retail & Distribution, Sundaram Infotech Solutions Limited

Starting from hand held then mobile phone, then TV, then house-hold equipment etc would increasingly get programmable applications. Developing appliets for these devises is going to be a big business

Updating Technology becomes a blood thrust

idea posted by siva sankar B.Tech/B.E. student, Tamilnadu College of Engineering

Today every technology is making the one of other new things....... but this dosent get the pace to reach the end developer as they do things restricted to defined pattern without updation.......  To compramise the above fact ,what seems to be a promising is new technology can be imparted to the upcoming generation through a revision made in their academics which do bring out some skilled freshers priced for knowledge in technology rather than being flexible.......

RIA(AJAX, GWT, Flex), JAVA, .NET F#, Dynamic languages

idea posted by Arun.K.R Associate Consultant, Expicient Inc

now Java is in the position of C++ and .NET being the best competitor with F# (I'm speaking in a job perspective).

I'm in favour of Dynamic languages(especially python)

They are claiming more and more favour in recent years, because of speed advantage over statically typed languages in being narrowed and advantage of agile development.

This is the era of web applications, so AJAX plays an important role (so does Flex).

GWT is a best kid in the block.

These technologies seems to have a bright future
