The Ganges river has been considered one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. The extreme pollution of the Ganges affects 400 million people who live close to the river. The river waters start getting polluted right at the source. The commercial exploitation of the river has risen in proportion to the rise of population. Gangotri and Uttarkashi are good examples too. Gangotri had only a few huts of Sadhus until the 1970s and the population of Uttrakashi has swelled in recent years. As it flows through highly populous areas the Ganges collects large amounts of human pollutants, e.g., Schistosoma mansoni and faecal coliforms, and drinking and bathing in its waters therefore carries a high risk of infection. While proposals have been made for remediating this condition, little progress has been achieved. Recently,[when?] the World Bank agreed to loan India US$1 billion over the next five years to clean up the Ganges. Along the 4 miles (6.4 kilometres) stretch of terraced bathing ghats in the holy city of Varanasi, the water of the Ganges is a "brown soup of excrement and industrial effluents."The water there contains 60,000 faecal coliform bacteria per 100 ml, 120 times the official limit of 500 faecal coliforms/100ml that is not considered safe for bathing. The Ganges river's long-held reputation as a purifying river appears to have a basis in science. First of all, the river carries bacteriophages that vanquish bacteria and more. As reported in a National Public Radio program, dysentery and cholera are killed off, preventing large-scale epidemics. The river has an unusual ability to retain dissolved oxygen, but the reason for this ability is unknown.[9

Bann the factories responsible for pollution

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

The above two ideas are really fruitful but sorry to say, they won't be working properly till the basic cause cause of Ganga's pollution is resolved.i.e, industrial wastes those are situated in the banks of the river. The amount is so high that even bacterias, filtering etc won't be able to stop the poisonous chemicals which cannot be cleaned by filtering and bacterias. So those industries on the bank of the Ganges responsible for its pollution should be immediately stopped or else at least made some minimum rules above which generation of wastes in the riven will face them fine. They will get closed automatically. The main reason government is not doing that is GREED!!! They are afraid of the loss of income they'll face if they don't do it thus are not controlling them. Our country has lot of companies enough for our development and many more as Green. We are not "Only dependent" on those factories for our sole development.

ACTIONS TAKEN FOR CLEANING GANGA RIVER...

idea posted by Nohar Singh Dhruv Jr. Engg, Chhatisgarh State Electrical Board
I think following steps should adopted for cleaning Ganga : 1. Intercepting untreated municipal sewage and industrial wastewater flowing into river and diverting to sewage treatment plant. 2. Setting up Sewate Treatment Plants (STP) in the cities lying along the river for treatment of sewage and wastewater with suitable technologies for the standards for river dischare and letting treated effluent into river. 3. Construction of bio gas/electrical crematoriums in the river bank. 4. Construction of bathing ghats/toilets to eliminate open defecation in river bank. 5. Improvements to river banks to ensure its stability against erosion Afforestation, creating avenues along river bank. 6. Solid waste management systems to prevent dumping of solid wastes in the river.

Strict implementation of the Decisions

I agree with Ms.Anjali that factories should be banned because 70% of ganga water is polluted by waste dischared from all industries and factories. But this action should be taken strictly so that pollution of ganga river will be stopped. also people should be aware of the effects when they are throwing waste materials in river on the name of rituals...............

idea posted by prashant adhav Civil Engineer-Other, kala construction

polluted water that contiminates river water should be treated at source only and factories responsible for same should be fined heavily for not obeying laws and polution authority should be held  responsible for not implementing the laws criminal cases should be filed by ngos against pollution board

The purification of Ganga can be done with bacterias destroy  the dirt. This is the organic way of cleaning. If my information is correct all the hotels and resorts at Ootacamund (Ooty) have to use similar bacteria in drainage system. If the government take initiative all the revers in India can be properly maintained.
