A mentor, basically, is someone who serves as a counselor or guide. Being asked to serve as a mentor is an honor. It indicates that the company has faith in the person's abilities and trusts him or her to have a positive impact on the situation.

Many companies have discovered that the use of a mentor for new employees not only helps employees settle into their job and company environment, but also contributes to a lower turnover rate. The use of a mentor may be an informal, short-term situation or a more formal, long-term assignment.

So, what to look for in a mentor??

Openness and Respect

idea posted by Darshana Sawant HR Manager, Leading IT services company

Both the mentor and the person being mentored need to be open and honest, yet respect the other. A mentor who withholds important information or comments does not contribute to the other person's success.

However, such comments should be delivered with tact and courtesy--and (even if somewhat hurtful) received with an open mind.

respect is a mandatory if you don't respect your mentor then you probably don't deserve one.

openness if a book better kept short, the more you add the lesser the respect gets. there should be a certain amount of openness which cannot become arsenal

Maturity & Communication Skills & Empathy

idea posted by K. NARAYAN None, None

The difference between a fresher and a person who has been with a company for some years is maturity.

Knowledge wise , the fresher may be on par or have more knowledge than his mentor. The fresher may also be more talented.

What the years would have given the mentor should be maturity which normally comes with experience and understanding.

The mentor should have good communication skills , so that there are no misunderstandings.

The mentor should be able to empathise with the fresher to understand the latter's reactions and viewpoints.

Sometimes having a good mentor can be vital for the growth and success of a persons’ career. Since it isn't always easy to find that one special person, a company should provide great mentors.

A good mentor should have integrity, be well experienced, professional, very knowledgeable, helpful, a good teacher, good at what they do, someone that has great communication skills, someone that you can build rapport with & a great leader. You want someone who can lead you & guide you in the right direction, and a good mentor should be able to do just that.

Mentor should educate and point the options. He should not provide solutions. He must foster communications so that the mentored can find the solutions. The act of finding the solutions is the most important component of the learning process as it fosters self confidence.

So a mentor should be more of a teacher and definitely should not be a solution provider.

a mentor needs to be able to be a selfless friend, guide and philosopher without making one dependent on him or feeling obliged, which role can be played with deep insights into individual and organsational behaviours and issues of life and career  - which insights he could share and plant into the mentee without prescribing enabling reflect upon himself independently leading to ability to introspect and charter his own growth through self-realisation and enlightenment leading to personal growth for personal effectiveness and career success.

COMFORTABILITY

idea posted by Manoj Kumar Sr: Manager - QA, ARCHETYPE GROUP, INDIA

For mentoring relationship to be strong and effective one should be comfortable to discuss all issues without any hinderance. A good mentor will want to ensure that you gain confidence and independence as a result of mentoring, and that you are enabled to take full and effective responsibility for your own development over the next career stage.

Depending on the mentee (fresher or experienced), the mentor qualities should differ. A fresher would require his mentor to be of parental nature, a counselor who welcomes the mentee in the organisation whereas for an experienced mentee, the mentor should be more of a career planning guide who guides the mentee in his career growth and helps him take the right steps.

A mentor should be more of like a coach, and should have the following attributes(ofcourse there are more). Other ideas also highlight some of them.

# is friendly

# has understanding of the company(culture and ehtics)

# has guiding abilities(involves communication)

# is a good listener

# is not his Manager/Supervisor

A Mentor has to be a good leader who leads by example. He must be a good follower & open person to learn new things, willingness to accept his/her mistakes & improve on them.

person who believes what he says, and says what he belives in rather than just going with the current with others is a true mentor. you can find all the ideologies in books but finding a person who lives by them is difficult. Personally i would look for these qualities in a mentor.

Encourage mentees to explore and take onus of their actions and decisions.

idea posted by Shalabh Capoor CEO/MD/Director, Sheela Foam Pvt. Ltd..
A mentor should encourage its mentees to explore and take responsibility of their actions and decisions. He should not repsort to prescriptive and parenting as it will increase dependency but should rather help them explore alternatives that are possible and help them to look at pros & cons of each and let the mentee decide. This will help expand the horizon of the mentee and whatever be the outcome the mentee shall take onus of the result as it is his own decision. Usually it is easy for a mentor to slip into a parenting role which inhibits risk takinga encouraging dependnecy.

Leadership doesnt mean bossing around or delegating work amongst sub-ordinates. It means being able to make the team work as one single body with each team members contributing as per their capacity.

Effective knowledge Transfer from mentor to mentee

A good debate Darshana. A mentor system is a novel idea. The very purpose is to ensure knowledge transfer from mentor to mentee so that the mentee works and lives up the organization's expectations.
