Tuesday morning was unlike a usual morning for it brought with it very shocking news for lakhs of students across the country. Forty four deemed universities in 13 states were de-recognized by the HRD Ministry. The decision brought gloom amongst the students and their parents.

Their future, their fate was at stake. More than 2 lakh students doing under-graduate and post-graduate courses in these universities were shattered by this decision.

I would like to know from the users in this platform, what were the reasons behind Government abolishing these Deemed universities?

They were into minting money

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

The deemed universities were nothing but virtually education-shops’ to mint money. It was a good decision by the union government to derecognise them. But this is not enough. University Grants Commission (UGC) should play a role of perfect monitoring authority over all private universities in a manner Reserve Bank of India monitors all banks including private banks. Such a step will effectively check malpractices in private universities especially in respect of fees-structure. They are just a back-door admission tactics charging double fees from the students than normally fixed.  UGC should order refund of extra fees already charged from students in name of categories like ‘sponsored fees’ by these Universities. Then only self-regulation will be possible in a system where private sector is dominating all fields in day-to-day life. Also Right to Information (RTI) Act should be extended to private sector as well.

63 years of independence. 60 years of being republic. The country is yet to have a proper education policy in place.  We have knowledge commissions who are only to be seen pointing fingers at each other in public debates on national television. Every time there’s a change in the government at the centre our policies, syllabuses, members of all such commissions, everything changes. End result we go back to square one. That’s India for you. Over the years we have become a race, most unfortunately, who do nothing but aping. A culture, a race whose roots go deep back almost to the advent of human beings on this planet has been brought down to this. Shame!

The answer to the problem of or rather education itself in India doesn’t lie in how many universities we have, deemed/affiliated/recognised or not. The answer to the problem is very simple but authorities handling the issue are the most complex. To be in a university you have to have the basic education. That’s where the solution lies. What we need is the primary education to percolate deep down the masses. How can we forget that more than 70% of our population is living beyond the urbanized world? The education has to reach them. Basic primary education is what we are talking about and not just making them write their names as drawing pictures. We need to make them strong, educate them and bring them to a level from where they can take a step forward themselves. Irrespective of religion, caste or creed, basic education has to be imparted to all the citizens of India. Yes, it’s rather easier said than done but where’s the intent?

The entire nation debates, education in colleges, universities come to a standstill to find a consensus over reservations in premier institutes. It doesn’t amuse but pains. What a shameful wastage of time, money and resource. Reserve seats for whom? We are unable to provide basic education to the masses and you need reservations for different sections and classes in country’s world famed premier institutions? Joke. Reservation is the only solution that the so called decision (money) makers of this country know. It’s nothing but a motive to motivate the voters to enhance their vote banks. The illiterate, ignorant mass understands nothing. They are fooled day in any day out. Yes, it’s easy as they don’t understand what’s happening. They are ignorant to the core. Irrespective of what political affiliation these policy makers are it benefits them all. So whether it’s the first or the last commission the end result remains the same. Deemed university’s are nothing but a way of shying away from the government’s responsibility by offloading it and in the bargain making a few people cash rich.

Here only policies would change all the time but the problems would remain forever. Sad but fact.

Probably, Murali is not able to comprehend the damage already done. Even if you have a positive note on the agenda, the will of the Govt. is still missing! However lofty the ambitions may be, the implementation speaks of the intentions. We have lost 62 years already. Do we hold our patience to lose another 50 years? Generations have been lost and we have not been able to create the awareness amongst the masses. We still see the ignorance towards basic hygiene, towards social responsibilities and towards building a nation.

one of the correction steps of this govt, in the education sector

idea posted by Deeso Manjila Head - FTZ

The HRD ministry in the previous govt, was handled by Arjun Singh who was busy in everything except streamlining education sector. NoBody wanted to disturb the applecart because of the unknown dynamics of an alliance govt, where the majority party didnt have much numbers in their favour. The present Minister (Kapil Sibal) seems to have recd a direct briefing from PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, to clean the mess of the previous govt. He unlike his predecessor, seems to have empowered the academicians, secretaries and other arms of the ministry to shake up and effect the changes for the good. Another example is Kapil Sibal's idea to "De-MAT" the university degree certificates....

Though it is one of the corrective measure the HRD wants to take, the announcement was ill-timed.  Just imagine the plights of tens and thousands of students and their parents who would have by now siphoned off all their hard-earned savings under the garb of giving top-class education to their kith and kin.  The Government should have acted very cautiously, after pulling out the students from the so-called deemed universities and got them enrolled in the State-affiliated universities.  Had the announcement came at the close of the academic session, at least one quarter of them would have been out from the universities.  The transition should have been smoother without affecting the morale of the student communities.

Education is a State subject.  If the existing educational institutions in a particular State fails to adhere to the HRD ministry's order, the students future would be doomed.  There were a number of such wrongs have been committed by the Ministry and AICTE in the past. The Ministry is seriously thinking of opening the Education space to the Global universities in the country, thereby abolishing UGC and AICTE.  The global standards are going to be de facto standard for setting up any future educational institution.  We are planning to open up another mess, where 70 per cent of our population are still agrarian based, and the education and health are deprived seriously to these masses.  So many governments have come in and gone, no one has seriously thought out this menance.  Of all, India was a signatory to the Millenium Development Goal.  There is no check on the number of drop outs after the primary education.

They are not realising one thing that the deemed universties status was issued by the same government which has come back into power.  It is the responsibility of the party to fix responsibility on those who have been instrumental in awarding the deemed universities status without favour or nepotism.

Corrective measure should have started from there, before chastising the deemed universities concerned, that would have sent the warning signal to those who are in the pipeline to get such status without credentials, but with money power.

The Education Ministry has a lofty challenge to educate over 65 to 70 crore population.  Correcting a fragment is not going the correct all the mistakes they have committed in all these years, after independence.  They have not upheld the fundamental rights as enshrined in the Constitution, Right to Education, Right to Health and so on.

Better to make effective policies.

    • Why we always bent on to abolished the universities or other things in India, and why to do so after such a long time? When these universities are playing the important role in educating the people in India. Why we cant think to change the system by making effective policies, rules and regulation. Today we think the deemed universities are only minting money, its ok everyone is in business to mint money not only in education sector but at others sectors too. Why  to do so when we are very well aware with the functioning of each and every government department. I think it is better to make effective rules, with strong implementation of policies and more importantly is to be aware about these rules.

Amit I support you. The deemed universities are doing good than the government affiliated universities. This is a business world and everyone needs money, apart from that they do provide quality education. The government should not abolish these universities instead come up with some better policies that would help both the universities and the students.

Thanks....

Finally the HRD Ministry has started working

idea posted by Jaygopal Raghavan Marketing Manager, Landmark Group

Though it is easy to say that the Ministry has started working finally, reality may be different. It could be due to politics within the ministry or the need to rein in UGC that might have started flexing its muscles to the ministry.

The reason i am sceptical about the whole thing is because of the fact that a ministry waking up suddenly to bar deemed universities inspite of turning a nelson's eye for this long doesnt sound right to me. If at all it was honest in its efforts and wanted to help the students genuinely why didnt they look inwards first. They should have set-up a ministerial enquiry to look into the handiworks of the UGC first and foremost and then look at other universities, colleges etc.

The Hon. Minister after playing with lives of thousands of student now has a rethink. this is nothing but a ploy to extract money from cash strapped govt. it needs all the funds to run the country as it economic policies are in doldrums

The Implementation of Norms by Universities was feeble, and was damaging the Education System.

idea posted by Sujeet Vishwakarma Managing Director, RCA Group

Most of the Universities in the deemed Category donot have a proper study material, their norms are not well followed, still the students pass through without any much of education recieved. This was resulting in Financial Wastage, and most of all INTELLECTUAL WASTAGE OF INDIAN YOUTH. financial loss can be tolerated. but, talking of the moral loss, it really had taken Gross shape. they needed a jerk. at least.

Another reason was that some colleges tagged 'expected(2012)' DEEMED UNIVERSITY, spoiled the scene by commercializing the Deemed Tag. The Corruption was going over the brink. THE ACTION NEEDED TO BE TAKEN.
