I am not against the ban on plastic but when people talk about promoting paper bags, they do not know that processing paper is 20 times more polluting than making plastic.
Paper is more biodegradable than plastic, I agree, but printed paper is also a lot more toxic than plastic.
Let us look for a more practical solution and not throw away the baby with the bathwater. One solution is making multiple use of bags, paper, plastic, jute or cloth. It is throwing away the bags indiscriminately that is the root of the problem.
Even strict check will not help. To all such manufacturers the govt. should give some loan to change to say cloth or jute bags.
I do not know how this ban is gonna be effective. Plastic is not the only threat to environment. There are several others also. Putting a recycling system in place, and stopping the casual disposal, is what is required in stead of banning any product. After all the industry has employed a lot of people and you just cannot make all of them to lose their bread and butter. Also why do not we ban petrol, deisel LPG all these are also a threat to environment?

Well! As we all know it is not easy to replace the plastic bags, but if we start thinking and implementing few ideas, it is achievable!. for example in Himachal Pradesh, Govt banned the plastic bags from the last 3 yrs. now and it appeared a effective step.first of all shopkepers should charge the customers for each bag like 25 paisa for each bag, which can atleast control the excessive usage of plastic bags. and at the same time govt. can promote the alternate for ex. usage of waxed paper bags and Jute bags. This method has been implemented across the world and found effective as well!

I do support this
Jute / cotton bags must be heavily subsidised by taxing plastic, to ensure natural death of plastic

Now I am UK, which is one of the most advanced and developed, affluent, and health conscious country of the world. BUT, it has not banned use of any such plastic bags. I find the shopkeepers using freely not only colorless plastic bags but much more in quantity the recycled colored bags. However, the municiplaities of UK have very perfect public health & cleanliness systems in vogue and any body cannot find any such plastic bag thrown openly on the roads, parks or any other place to make that look shabby. A question arises, which product in lieu of the banned plastic bags does the Government recommend? Should that be paper bags, which is made of wood, which comes by cutting of trees? Since the trees help to reduce air pollution cutting of trees is also banned by the Government. If plastic bags cause polution, a question arises, which product is pollution free? Every bio-product causes polution and even jute products are also made of bio-products, the jute as grown in the fields. Today, in every household of India, we use plastic (per) jars, even feeding bottles for your small children and toys for every child (who are very dear to you), millions of bottles every day for mineral water, buckets, waste baskets made of plastics. Several other products are made of plastics. In other words, every other household material is made of plastic. A pertinent question arises, why ban only on plastic bags, why not on all plastic products? Is it because the plastic jars and other plastic products are manufactured only by the big indurial houses, not by cottage industry, which is a product of cottage indstry? So, instead of banning any product the State Governments should stress on the municipalities to make their public health system effective. Governments should not try to escape their basic duties and responsibilities to provide service to the tax paying people by imposing such restrictions to make their officials relax just by making unwanted laws for the public. So, banning of plastic bags can be nothing but merely a preplanned move to destroy lakhs of small scale & cottage industries just to favor a handful of big industry houses like Reliance, which produces the raw material for plastic bags. So, at least the media should investigate deep such type of bans being imposed by the Governments. Mere using of the jute bags is not the solution. Using of minds is the real solution. Even using of jute bags in India frequently by common man would set back the foreign trade of India and would lose substantial foreign exchange, which India earns through export of jute & jute products. Media must try to understand the conspiracy of politicians against the common public instead of supporting such laws, which are not in the interests of the public. |

Members of this forum need to review the situation on following grounds also.
A question arises, where the petro-chemical bye-products of refineries, etc., which is used for packaging, is proposed to be disposed of by the Government of India or the States?
The major producers are giant Petro-chemical industries of India, e.g., Reliance, Essar, etc. So, definitely those big industrial houses are not going to throw their products in the Indian Ocean or the Arabian Sea to lose billions of dollars every year in their profits through such like bye-products. Moreover, even if they immerse these products in seas, would that not pollute on large scale the oceans leading to destruction the sea creature/sea foods leading to severe loss for millions of families of the fishermen of India, the other section of the poorest clans of India?
Most probably, these industrialist must have some strategic plan in their mind how to swallow the small enterprises also, as usually the big industrialists are in the habit of entering in to even the retail markets run by even the poorest of the poor persons of India, e.g., Reliance entering in to the markets of even very small and poor fruit and vegetables vendors, etc.
Another question arises, when the Government announces several programs for eradicating poverty, would that not thrust more people to go even down below the existing poverty line and by introducing such mindless policies, is that the policy of the Government/ politicians to indirectly eradicate poverty by directly eradicating the poor people from India's scene on whose vote power only the politicians try to survive to rule over Indian people?
Needless to emphasize, all political parties depend only on millions of fund donations provided by the big industrial houses only and not on small membership subscriptions of their members.
Moreover, recycling of the used up plastic material gives a great setback to the consumption of the millions of tons of bye-products, as produced by such big industries, the cost of which is very high to be afforded by the cottage industry and common man.
Naturally, after the Governments are successful to impose ban on plastic products, the public will have to shell out much more money out their pockets to acquire the products, which the big industrial houses would be thinking in their minds to introduce in the market as substitutes to the existing plastic bags.
Dear Rohit,
About your recommendation on use of wax paper, I may remind you that, like the material used in plastic bags, wax is also a bye-product of petro-chemicals.
Dear Sanjay,
Banning of plastic bags and banning of smoking cannot be equated. Just see the motives behind each ban.

Probably they find it difficult to provide solutions for the real issues faced by all and sundry such as rampant corruption, spiraling price rise etc., so just want to convince people that there intentions are good, (the good environment would mean healthy and happy people) and hoodwink the common people to believe that they are on the right track...

It would be naive to get trapped with something that has very insignificant impact on our life processes and waste our precious time and energy discussing the same. One can easily trace out statistically the direct co-relation with the geopolitical areas enforcing such ban to divert attention to the real problems. Real problems such as unemployment, poverty, inflation (ever spiraling prices) , corruption, unchecked crime rate, poor governance and administration, deteriorating security etc. are wrapped under the carpet... Also, hope the administration will wake up to tackle the latest challenge "superbug in water" that is major threat to health and well being of citizens>> Refer:- http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/science/article1607807.ece
I agree, plus they now will start taking bribes to issue licenses to manufacture plastic bags :) nice move by BBMP.

Hey,
The ban on plastics paves way for , firstly, reducing its use secondly, improve the environmental awareness. Strong measures required are, (1).Producers need to have a strong recycling plan as in European countries does it. For example, items are collected back by the vendors for recycling & sent to the producers for disposal.(2). More Plastic waste treatment plants are to be in place (3). Collect , segregate plastics. May be a collection center be opened by district HQ for disposal. (4). Individual plays vital role i.e. following waste minimization program i.e. use only when it is required and collect to dispose wisely as instructed by the manufacturer.
Hey,
I have given the " Central Pollution Control Board, highlights on Plastic Waste Management". http://www.cpcb.nic.in/Highlights/2007/139-144.pdf
We need to concentrate , at present how best, Plastic usage can be reduced, particularly, at-least, in Metros like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai etc. Because, as Geography dictates, it is difficult to stop it all over in India. Let us explore the possibilities. It is the right direction that Delhi, now decides it.

Banning the plastic in not practically possible in India. What would be the ideal substitute for the plastic which is more durable. Even if we want to use other paper bags which would result in cutting of trees. Moreover due to the destruction of trees and forests we lack the proper rain in our country. As per law corruption is also a crime and punishable but anyone can give the assurance that there is no corruption in our country. Similarly we have lot of laws in paper in our country and they are not properly adhered. Our law systems have several loop holes and are manipulated by the people who are in the helm of affairs.First we need to create the public awareness in educating them not to throw away the wastage or used articles in the streets and roads, but should be advised to put them in the dust bin kept for the purpose which should be cleared by the municipalities.Heaping on streets and road sides is the headache for all such problems and mostly we could see the wastage/plastic bags are being thrown or mixed to the drainage systems creating health hazards. What we need a proper administration focusing on good cleaning systems periodically. Thanks for the referral Ms.Kavitha. |

Friends please refer the views posted by Mr.Kaliyamoorthy explaining various types of concerns by the individual, group, consumer, producer, govt.,enforcement etc., how the ban on using plastic will be successful? First we have introduced the plastic for usage by the public and then asking not to use and in what way the banning will be effective when everybody used to the habit. Further how the authority declaring ban on plastics will be able to achieve the results and definitely the purpose will be defeated. That is why I have taken the stand that it is not possible practically.

People know the effects of plastic on the environment. But what they have in addition is negligence and laziness in finding the solution, now at this moment what we need to do is creating much more awareness and vexing them with awareness advertisements and we need to show a solution like jute bags etc. so that small scale eco friendly industries will be promoted, and these plastic industries should be suppressed.

The Govt. Shall ban import of raw marl, levy more tax, such that they become costly. This is the one single most important agenda. India shall show the way to developed nations.

Awareness of the people once improved ie about the disadvantages and the bad effects of it on environment and health of the people ,there will be some change in mindsets of the so called developed society. And also the alternative industries like Paper, Jute etc can be increased. It is difficult to impose strict compliance by law.Only the awareness improves the system. |

People are doing whatever they want to do. They didnt know the right or wrong. they are just doing the things. No thinking No analysation. People have to know their responsibilities. if not every policy will not be completed. |
