The general notion is that the Boss is scary and has a hunter in his hand. When we get a feedback we fell ok because it comes form our boss but what when it is other way round. You always feel that if you criticize him at right places he would not take it in the right way. So what are the best practices here? How can you give fedback to the Boss the right way?

Choose the correct timing

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

Sometimes what you say might be right but when you say might not be..Timing really matters. You should bring it up to your boss as early as possible. Make sure you do not mix your emotions with them. Try not to get personal as emotions can affect judgment negatively. Take an objective approach to any problem or situation you want to share with your boss. Also prepare yourself to show that you have already thought about the particular situation you have shared and suggest some possible solutions.

I agree with you dipika. But is also depends upon boss nature also. Some bosses want to say only yes, it does not matter what they say right or wrong.

Feedback of any kind can be given to the boss with a little bit of diplomatic way. But, this feedback shall not hurt the feelings of your boss. If your intention is honest, everyone will be ready to take such feedback without any hesitation. But, the timing is very crucial. The moods of the boss shall be taken into consideration. You just cant give your feedback to your boss when he is surrounded by peers and others. You must be polite in your approach.

Bosses are dangerous species! On top of it many even lack self confidence. HENCE; One has to be diplomatic, tactful & be careful about timing. Besides it is necessary to do it in indirect way. There is a popular story Birbal Ki Khichdi. This story is about how Birbal pointed out to Akbar that he was wrong without hurting Akbar's ego. Worth following while dealing with bosses.

Boss is like God who can make or break your life but he is not very comfortable to listen feedback about him. Untill unless required feedback should be avoided . One need to weigh the requiremnt of giving feedback . If at all required it should be done diplomatically . The best way is pass on the feedback thru his/her close friend who shares informations with him .Try to feed good points along with the feedback so that the boss realises that you are one of the wellwisher.

Not only time but also location and neighboring people also matter when discussing with boss. When these parameters are correct the discussion gets fruitful.

I send an update everyday morning about yesterday and plans for today. It is clear, truthful and honest (including appreciation and criticism). Boss got used to it. He is so used to it, that he sends a mail, if I forget to send an update. Most important is Boss will know what we have done yeaterday and what we plan to do today. He can also make a comparison between our plans and actions and assess our capabilities. It helps.

RELATIONSHIP /WEIGHTAGE

IT IS THE PRIME FACTOR IN ANY ORGANIZATION TO MAINTAIN CORDIAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BOSS AND THE SUBORDINATES. IF ONE GOES BY THE TIME FACTOR WELL AND NO DOUBT IT WILL DO ALL WONDERS. BUT IT IS NOT TIME ALONE TO BRING CHANGES IN HIS OR HER ATTITUDE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR SYSTEMATIC APPROACH U FOLLOW BY THROWING A SIMPLE QUESTION TO YOUR OWN BOSS AND GET IT DONE. BUT ONE THING IS CLEAR THAT ALL DEPENDS ON THE WEIGHT AGE OF THE WORK WE CARRY. THIS IS FREE FROM DAY TO-DAY ACTIVITIES.

Relationship with boss is very important as it helps you in seeking guidance and taking important decisions. If you don't have good relationship with your boss your life may become hell. If your relationship is friendly there is no need to be diplomatic or timing or place though it also depends upon the organisation and the work culture. In my case, if my boss is missing out something i always tell him/her about the consequences of that decision and that has helped me.

Through out my working live I have made it a point to be free and frank in all my feed back to my bosses. At time it is difficult to give the true feed back due to fear of as to how the boss will react. But it is better to truthful. There were situation when the boss has reacted badly. But in the long run I have always stand to gain and also been appreciated.
