A mobile browser, also called a micro browser, mini browser or wireless internet browser (WIB), is a web browser designed for use on a mobile device such as a mobile phone or PDA. Mobile browsers are optimized so as to display web content most effectively for small screens on portable devices. As mobile internet is gaining popularity, many companies are coming up with latest mobile browsers. Which are the most popular and commonly used mobile browsers?

Opera Mini

idea posted by Mahalakshmi Subramanium QA/QC Manager, Genpact

MiniI think that, Opera Mini is the most popular mobile browser. Opera Mini is a web browser designed primarily for mobile phones. It uses the Java ME platform and requires the mobile device be capable of running Java ME applications. Its main feature is that it can run even on less capable phones.

Opera Mini Leads. Opera Mini's compression technology was introduced recently for both speed and cost. Which saves mobile bills for users.

Opera Mobile

There is one more mobile browser from Opera. Opera Mobile is a web browser for smartphones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) developed by the Opera Software company. Opera Mobile is available for a variety of devices that run the Windows Mobile, S60, or UIQ operating systems. It is the first mobile browser to bring the full Web to the small mobile screen.

I agree with Ms. Mahalakshmi, Opera mobile is the frequently used mobile browser for windows based mobile phones. It has many advance features like tabbed browsing, a speed dial option for faster bookmarking, an improved interface for better keyboard and touch control and a password manager.

Opera Mini is good and it's free. Mozilla's Minimo is good to try.

Opera Mini is a good browser. But I am not willing to pay for a browser.

iphone Safari

Every iphone comes with bundled with Safari. Safari is a fast, reliable full HTML browser which shows almost all contents. It also has multipage feature which is sadly missing from Opera Mini, the only real competitior.

Since all iphones use Safari and iphone is the hottest smartphone now, Safari has to be among the top.

Skyfire

I am adding one more browser which is useful in streaming videos. Skyfire is a mobile web browser for Windows Mobile 5 and 6 and Symbian S60 v3. It is the first browser for Windows Mobile which can view Adobe Flash content and streaming video. Features such as Adobe Flash, Silverlight and QuickTime are usable without additional plug-ins on the device, and can be easily updated server-side without the need to update the client.

Pocket Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer Mobile or IE Mobile (formerly named Pocket Internet Explorer or PIE before Windows Mobile 5.0) is a web browser developed by Microsoft, and comes loaded by default with Windows Mobile and Windows CE for Handheld PC. It does similar operations as Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 and 7 browsers; however, it is not based on the same layout engine. IE Mobile is available both for Windows Mobile and Windows CE platforms, though the latter is more feature-rich.
