The year 2009 started with a big trouble caused by the economic downturn. However, in the second half of the year, the market again saw a rise in it and is ending with a fair good figure in the stock exchange. As the world economy is improving and the earnings of domestic companies are gaining momentum, many analysts believe the market will appreciate even further from the current levels. Actually, presently every stock with strong fundamentals has the potential to gain among which some sectors usually perform better than the others.

Based on the current situation, I want to know from you guys what are the sectors that are potential to invest in 2010?

Information tecnology

idea posted by Esha Johar Risk Analyst, Irevna

The information technology sector has performed very well during the second half of this year. Positive developments in the global economic conditions have kept the IT stocks in a bullish mode. As economic conditions are improving in the developed markets. It seems these stocks will perform well in the near to medium terms.

I agree with your thought completely, it's not easy to overcome the recession so fast, but i think infrastructure and power will be the area of focus. As far as IT is concerned, it has become an important part of every industry directly or indirectly, it  has the scope to grow in any case.

2010 does not exhibit a clear picture for investment in any specific sector. Power is likely to remain depressed till first half. US market is not in a position to create sizeable demand for IT industry. Dollar position will remain weaker that may attract IT companies to take up orders from US market but opportunities may not be suuficient. There is likelihood of IT and banking sector to lift up from the second half. I would advise investors to remain float in these segments to get return at the end of the year.Clear cut investment advice from my desk will follow later

Telecommunication

This  is rising sector. every co. will turn paisa 01.00 call rate. Then after paisa 01.00 for two calls. As co needs one time capital exp. which will bear fruit for decades to come.

Telecommunication is best option in current condition.

In my opinion tele communication sector will be in the fall this year because due to immense competition every company in telecom sector is providing there services at cheap rates and cost remaining the same, so the amount of profit of the company is decreasing but the leaders of this company can soon make such a policy so that small and new company will not be able to survive and this sector will be in good position again.

Example- Sending a SMS cost less than one paise to telecom companies for which they were charging 10p-150p per sms before, due to competition now they have decreased the price to one paise/sms, so the amount of profit has decreased a lot.

Due to this reason telecom sector is not a good investment at least this year or until a new policy of leaders' that can change the sector into good investment option.

A portfolio of all sectors is a better proposition

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Instead of puting all your money in one basket, it is always better to have a portfolio, so that if on one day some sectors underperform, the sectors that outperform will pull the value of your portfolio up, so that every day will record a gain and lesser of losses. Ultimately the general market mood will push the portfolio up. Pick up companies based on ones risk aversion. If highly risk averse pick up companies in all sectors that have high reserve level comapared to sales. If risk tolerent then pick up performing companies that has higher debt component. If medium riks tolerence then a hybrid consisting of both. Difficult to predict extraordinary performance from any sector since every economy all sectors perform homogeneously with similar roi, roe etc; Also one must choose the investment horizon when to get out and at what point of return.

Never put all your money in one basket is the mantra. In 2010 stock market will perform well and may be able to cross its previous heights. The sectors that will grow fast will be:-

i] Alternate Energy stocks, ii] Pharmacy stocks, iii] FMCG, iv] Banking,..........

Gold will perform well again. It may be able to touch $1500. Though Silver will follow but little risky. Cr.Oil will touch again $100 or can cross too. So please evaluate your position and then after Invest in a managed Portfolio.

Regards & Happy Trading.

Agree, it always make sense to have a diversified portfolio. However, to name a couple of sectors to watch in 2010 would be Power & Telecom sector. The power sector would undergo lot of changes and will see tremendous increase in demand with the expected economic Growth. Thus, from long term perspective Power sector looks apt for investment. Telecom is already growing at a rapid pace, still a large untapped market exists in rural India and hence, looks good for investment as well.

Due to the present magnetic field controlling earth, there is only one safe place to invest your money is land.....It will remain as land itself and God has stop production of the land (soil). The investment will benefit you and your future generation

In a view you are right but it is not advisable to invest totally in this field. It is always better to acquir knowledge about the part of land, you want to invest.

I wiull advise to go for Mix Portfolio, not only in land.

It totally depends on who you ask, the amount of capital at risk, the type of investing instruments they will use, investment horizon, risk-return parameters etc.

Buying Power & Home Loans

idea posted by Dr. Pradeep Mehta Over all Management, Appropriate Technology Asia

With the expansion of MNC & Corporates in India the buying power of the private sector employees has improved in the past one decade. The majority of the couples in the cities are both earning so this has added to their buying power. In addition to this the banks home loans are easy to avail and  as the rents in the cities is so much that people prefer to give double the amount of the rent as EMI for their own asset (own home). So for the majority of family its like a dream OWN HOME.

Valuation will guide

idea posted by Sunny Sabharwal Manager, Altius Finserv Pvt Ltd

For investing in a particular stock or stocks in a particular sector, one can't blindly go by a theme or idea. I think that since one pays price before buying any scrip, it is the valuation that should govern the investment action. It does not seem to make a sense to buy a stock if -

a) we are bullish on power sector and

b) NTPC or any other stock for that matter is selling for exhorbitant price.

It is the price of a stock or unit of a mutual fund (relative to the competition, sector and the market as a whole) that should be the key factor to be taken into consideration while placing a buy order with the broker. This is because all other important factors - earnings (much talked about these days), company fundamentals, economic scenario - can only benefit the investor if the price rises. One of the tenets of stock market is - A bad (or good) investment has as much to do with what price was paid as it does with what business was bought.

Banking and Metals (esp. Steel stocks)

idea posted by Manish N Chugh Officer Trainee, Stock Holding Corporation of India ltd.,

As the inflation cooling down in the coming months and more chances of interest rate hikes, Banking stocks should do good if not in the beginning but at least from the second quarter of 2010. Also seeing the rise in demand in infrastructure sector especially Steel sector sounds very good and should perform well in the coming months.  ..... Thank you, Manish N

Cheers!!

idea posted by John D Nevin Manager - Finance & Administration,StreetEdge Investments

If one has a well diversified investment portfolio comprising of principal protected, guaranteed return investments such as bank deposits, National Savings Certificates, Government bonds, Debt oriented mutual funds etc and highly risk instruments such as Equity oriented mutual funds, shares of companies with good fundamentals, private equity investments etc and also real estate investments, he/she can obtain good returns from his/her investments. A well diversified  investment portfolio will definitely generate good returns over a longer period of time.
