Indira Gandhi

idea posted by Disha Roy Lecturer, St Xaviers College

Indira Gandhi figured on TIME cover for the first time when she was elected prime minister in 1966 with a line reading, "Troubled India in a Woman's Hands." Those steady hands went on to steer India, not without controversy, for much of the next two decades through recession, famine, the detonation of the nation's first atomic bomb, a corruption scandal and a civil war in neighbouring Pakistan that, under her guidance, led to the creation of a new state, Bangladesh," the magazine said.

By the time she was assassinated, in 1984, Gandhi was the world's longest-serving female prime minister, a distinction she holds to this day. I think she according to me was one of the influential women in the past century.

Well you are right.Ms.Indira Gandhi had created a special place for herself by her endurance and weilding great power and grit in dealing both internal and external forces. Though there are bound to be contaraversies it is a fact which cannot be denied that she had great influence in the past century reckoned by heads of various states internationally.

Yes Disha, Ms.Indira Gandhi is one of the most influential leader of the past century. She has taken certain bold decision like liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. But could not able to control her cactus circle of people from her cabinet who always painted wrong pictures about opposition this led her to declare emergency & move towards Dictatorship. However, she realized her mistake and declared general election, conducted without any manipulation. which she could have easily won by using official machinery & Army's help. A kind of discipline instilled among people, especially on business community & govt.servants, during emergency, who would not hv protested much, as all the prominent opposition leaders were jailed at that time. Incidentally, it is she who has asked Sam Pitroda to look into our telephone/telecommunication reforms, further supported by her son Rajiv Gandhi.

Mother Teresa

Disha, I think Mother Teresa is one of the most influential women in the past century. Near about 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned. She is the symbol of humanity all over the world. She acted as a advocate of poor and helpless people. She not only remained neutral when she has been praised by many individuals, governments and organisations but also when she has faced a diverse range of criticism from the people having a strong stance against contraception and abortion.

Devoting her life to the service of the poor and dispossessed Mother Teresa became a global icon for selfless service to others. Through her missionary of Charities organisation she personally cared for 1000s of sick and dying people in Calcutta. She was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1979.

Disha,i find her to place in this category. She has become one of the first winner in KBC.The woman who did not have bank account. She never opened the account in her life. She is from a very small village Giridih in Jharkhandh. She runs her house by sewing at a meager income of Rs 2000-3000 per month. She can inspire and influence women of her genre.
